What's your wrenching experience?
I bought my first Subaru when I was 24. Turbo 1.8.....took a 2 wheel drive auto trans with a good 1.8 single port injection engine and change wiring harness, engine, switches and of course fly wheel.....now I have a 92 loyale w 121,000 it runs good but it runs 3000 rpm's at 60 mph, Is that normal? does it have another gear? It should. But anyway...I have been turning wrenches w papaw for many many moons and can work on anything. Love me some Subaru though got a 96 outback that I took 2.5 out of and put 2.2 in also. Love the 1.8 love the 2.2 HATE the 2.5. Go Gators!

Hopefully someone will have an idea. I'm out of them.
1986 gl-10 turbo. took out the turbo engine and went back with multi port. no problem.... Started it up. Engine wouldn't run. Fuel pump bad. changed it. still engine wouldn't idle. just start and die. took timing covers back off and rechecked cam timing. So got it narrowed to a fuel problem. Spray fuel injector cleaner in intake and she took off and run like a champ. At this point I', stoked. Change fuel pressure regulator. Now I just know it's gonna run. 400 rpm's and if i give it gas it just falls on its face. Strai wired the pump to run all the time instead of cycling to try and get better pressure. no improvemint. finally pinched return line in tw o on back side of pressure regulator and give it the gas and vroom vroom does good. unpinch line and if you keep it revved up it will do good but if you let rpm's drop it will die. still won't idle. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Missing and hard start.
DONE!....finally. I found so many things not up to par that I'm surprised she ran. It started with foulded plugs, then it was a cracked injector and 2 leaking o-rings. Then The fuel filter was rust ridden, then the DOOM set in. ALL my vacuum lines were dry and brittle so i replaced them. ALL! Should be good right? NO! The after market Vacuum lines from Advance apparently have a different inside circumfernce than stock and causes HIgh idle. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I also replaced my driver side fron cv axle and did a "free" brake job while in the "pit"... The worst is yet to come. Wheel bearings! The absolute hardest job i've ever done period. Inner and Outer all around. SO.. $645 and 3 days and I think I got everything broke fixed. Sometimes I wish I had stuck with my 86 GL-10 but the comforts of heat and air and power and auto trans are worth it I guess. Anyway. I told you I would update when finished so there you have it. Look on the bright side. I still have lots of hair! JOF

Missing and hard start.
Not gonna be able to get to it till thursday since I now have to work early tomorrow but....I did get ahead of you on 1 thing. my buddy manages the auto zone here in town and is gonna let me borrow the scan tool overnight. he too said it would be a good idea to check readings at cold and operating temps. I will fill you in as i go. Oh....thanks for the pics. i too have a 96 OB 2.2L auto. Thanks again.

Missing and hard start.
On my way to work so it's gonna be brief. For about a week now I've noticed flooding when cold, hard starts when cold, lack of power when cold, still though when she warms up a slight miss or hesitation. Also increased fuel consumption. i'm gonna play with it tommorow just looking for ideas. My plan is to first tune up which is mostly warranty stuff anyway. Then pull injectors and fix em up with new o-rings and clean them. Lets go deliver America's mail.

1996 Subaru Outback Buying Qs
96 Outback wagon auto 273,462.5 miles and still kicking! Don't fear a Subaru. Embrace it for you will come to know it well and working on them couldn't be more simple. Great design goes a long way in my book. 150,000 is just broke in. JMO

Great Deal Alert!
New oil and filter is better than old oil and filter and nobody will convince me otherwise. Change it often and forget about it. LUCAS always!
-
Great Deal Alert!
Nationwide! Autozone has 5 qts Pennzoil and Fram filters for $12.99. Lucas Oil $9.99 I believe in the stuff.

'02 Forester: wife wants to dump it
Maybe you should make an off roader out of it and get your wife something older and cheaper and say here you go. Then you get a new toy and she's happy too. Then when it's done she'll want the Subaru back so it's a win win. You get to keep it and have a spare in the future.

hyrdaulic or cable clutch for a conversion?
Hell far people! It's a clutch cable. it takes 10 minutes to change and costs 15 bucks who cares? If you can save a few bucks in the short run and are willing to buy a few cables and pull it home in the long run.....go for it. If not better go Hydrolic.

Swapping to 5 spd

Bar's stuff any good for cracked block?
Jimmyowensfan20 replied to eseiler's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf it is cracked it is probably warped. The only option you have is liquid glass and if it ever gets HOT again thats gone too. But I've seen it run 50,000 miles in a Thunderbird with a turbo so i aint gonna knock it. But I'de just yank it out and either rebuild or replace.

i love subaru's
It's all pretty simple.

OH LORD! My wifes gonna kill me!
I found a 96 Outback Wagon just like mine with blown Head gasket. It has the same 2.5l that my car came with but has the same tranni and drive train with 85,000 miles on it. It is one of Granny's friends who bought a New one Baja! The were gonna charge her $800 to fix it and $2,000 on trade she said no thank you I'l just buy that one and keep mine and I called her and I've known her for many yrs. and She said "Can you fix it?" "yes" "Do you want it" "YES MAAAAMMMMM!" Well I'll take $500 dollars for it. I pick it up tomorrow and My Pappaw gave me the money and wouldn't take NO for an answer if you know how Pappaws can be. I'm so stoked! I think I might put my motor in that car. My Odometer is over 200,000. Probably put bearings, rings, and a complete gasket set which i didn't do last time. Only head gaskets and intake, exhaust, water pump which i'll trake back and exchange for fre and my battery and alt. and breaks, and Wow i got alot of warranty parts i could replace new againd. See what i told yall about lifetime warranty? Thank You Lord!

Should I buy this '92 Turbo?
Jimmyowensfan20 replied to wtdash's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXPLus........You don't know how long the engine ran with it sitting on it's roof and the pumps don't work so well with nothing to pump.

Torque Wrench Recommendation Anyone?
Oh! I also got a 2 foot 1/2 inch drive ratchet with a 4 foot piece of pipe for breaking things loose. you'de be surprised what a little leverage can do.

Torque Wrench Recommendation Anyone?
The bar style from MAC is what i have. I believe in the bar style for reliability over clickers....Don't be lazy. You may also want a inch pounds torque wrench as well.

starter bolt
Yea but...They are cheaper and Subaru did a great job of designing these motors to be user friendly. Lifetime warranty and exchange it is my philosophy. Oh! Advance's lifetime is lifetime one time. Auto zone is lifetime lifetime and they price match so check around and it doesn't have to have same name brand just same warranty.

new motor - ej20t or ej22na *NOW EJ20 NA *horsepower??
Jimmyowensfan20 replied to P K's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXturbo/non-turbo exhaust will not match up and ecu will not run properly. you'd need an entire car to do a switch like that.

Jimmyowensfan20 replied to P K's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI know of 8 within 100 miles of me. look for broke Timing belts. Boneyards don't fix them but you can and you can also get a broke timing belt engine cheap. call around.
