when to a local subbie dealer near me to try and establish desirability. They were not able to provide me with any numbers. I did find this little near by. It's currently not registered and has NV plates. In all reality I do not need another car so I think I will just simmer down a bit focus on house buying and studying for the LSATs. BW

Atleast the garden hose made it through the fire...

on a lighter note... Here is are some pictures of a FAIL-arri that I took yesterday while looking over my BRAT. Note the ridiculous badging.

I went to the ER the night of the accident and left there at 2:30 am:rolleyes: diagnosis. 1) CT scan shows that I actually DO have a brain and that it's "normal" 2) xray show no damage to the bones in the spine. I am a bit sore and getting sorer. Low back in stiff. Neck stiff. Will see doctor tomorrow and maybe get some pt. BW

yep it did buckle there. the driver side door area is also slightly buckled. I had to shove to get the door open. BW

Got rear ended yesterday on the freeway. Driving home from work came to a stop in the number 1 lane. Heard tires screeching behind and though "ohh ooo.. that doesn't sound good, hope they can stop in time. They screeching continues and I shift into gear attempting to move out of the way towards lane number 2. I think, "well, you have 1/2 of lane number 1 and this massive shoulder to the left that you can move into. Please make it to the shoulder.... BANG....." Got hit by some lady in a soul-less japanese subcompact. Maybe a kia or something like that. Her car it toast. Looks like bob the frankenbrat is a goner. RIP little fella.... BW

Since you are doing a lift kit, you can get an EA82 front crossmember with the power steering rack. The width of the crossmember is wider than the EA81 one, but the lift blocks can be mounted offset to accomodate. BW

+1 on the imp FWD axles being 23 spline. regarding positive camber. I had the same problem w/my BRAT. The Imprezas are wider than the EA series cars so the axles are going to be too long and cause your positive camber. I solved the problem by extending the front control arms by an inch.

i think it's a classic example of how we are taking these cars beyond their intended design limits. a completely tubular radius rod would probably do the trick, but then you will be dealing with the rear mount ripping off b/c it's just stamped sheet metal, so then you make a reinforced rear mount. After that I think things should be good. Can't really see the bolts shearing, but if they do, you might just want to design a one piece a arm for the front along with a new rear mounting point. that's my .02 BW

Full Impreza suspension/axle swap to 85' brat.

This was attempted by themixtwo. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=34445&highlight=themixtoo I am not sure if he ever finished. He stopped posting about 2 years ago. Sounds like he had access to some pretty good fabrication equipment. You could e-mail him to see where he is at. BW -
dang i will be trying this but i will be using the FT4WD gears & the 3.7 ratio

California SMOG : from Sconnie to Cali
s'ko replied to clinternet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
this will definately get the attention of the police. More so in the beach city areas like Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes. If you venture south to Orange County, then Irvine cops are pretty jerky. -

guess I should chime in on this one. Emission is based on the year of the car. As long as it is per spec when it was new and not blowing any smoke and in overall good condition, you should pass. You will have to get the o2 sensor replaced b/c if it throws a check engine light while you are testing it, then you will fail. Driving around w/non-cali plates is technically not legal. I think you have to register a car in state within 10 days of bringing it in. That being said, if you are headed to Cali for college and you stay within a college area, I doubt you will get hassled. They do have every right to pull you over for out of state tags and it might happen on occasion. PM jamal. He went to USC and for the longest time had Montana plates on his legacy. In regards to getting an EA82 and then taking it back east or I guess to the middle of the country. EA82s usually go for sub $1000 in price. They are getting less frequent on Craigslist and in the junkyards. But if you do find one, they will most likely be completely rust free. The only exception in the Los Angeles area would be one from the local mountains, where they use salt. Other than that, come on west young man. Be nice to have more old school soobieheads to hangout with. BW -
So from what I am reading, The EA gear set will not fit onto the EJ pinion shaft. Will the EJ upper gears fit onto the EA upper shaft? BW

Yeah get that job first and then invite us over for dinner with your first paycheck... then we can talk about your swap.

I wouldn't say several thousands of dollars. So far from the parts that I have gathered I have 300 for EA82 D/R 5 spd tranny, clutch, driveshaft, EA81 Jerry kit, and a bunch of other assorted stuff, the FT4WD tranny I am taking parts off of was from a parts car that I bought for $125 w/no engine. I estimate: machine work $50. Adapter plate is $100-180 custom driveshaft $100ish (if I go with the EA center locking diff) XT6 clutch kit $200 or custom clutch kit $300 if I want to get fancy an OBX lsd front diff for $450 so total with a EA FT4WD D/R w/the 1:50:1 low range, locking center diff, front and rear LSD. $1380.00. Can probably make it an even $1600 for unforeseen problems and some Uncle Scotty's Cocktail ingredients. This will be going into a 2k OBS w/2 inch lift and forester struts. thinking of running 27-29 inch tires. re: the EA82 tranny being able to only handle 90 hp of raw EA power, I have a EJ22T in my RX w/the EA82 FT4WD d/r. Been pretty aggressive with the car, hard launches, 1 rally cross and stuff and it shifts like a champ. Car had about 130k on the odo. I think the major limit to the holding power of the EA tranny is the clutch set up. The XT6 clutch is OK so far. We'll see how it continues to hold up. There is a 565lb curb weight difference between the 99 Outback (3200 lbs) vs the weight of a EA wagon (2635lbs), how of a factor is that remains to be seen. BTW I see that you are in Los Angeles. I have the tranny taken apart in my garage right now. When I get the upper gearset back from the machine shop, send me a PM if you want to come over and take a look. BW

lots to think about. upper gear set is at a machine shop getting worked on. Charging me $50 to swap the gears out. Sounds reasonable. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge. I am definately going to be kicking this around. might want to condense this thread w/pictures and make it a sticky as I think this is the next frontier in Subaru Retrofitting. So the final dilema is locked center or LSD center. Locked center has better off road characteristics but the open center diff limits overall on road capabilities. LSD center has better all round characteristics but limited off road capabilities. Seeing as it's pretty easy to get the pinion shaft swapped out, I am guessing that downtime overall is going to be about 1 day to get the EJ tranny apart and reassembled w/the bits that I want. My biggest fear is getting the thing back together. I am kinda intimidate by how the shifting rod connects to the shifting forks and getting that right. BW
-
ok so the pinion is a different piece than the rest of the gear shaft? How do you seperate it? I hear you on using the EJ casing to eliminate the need for adapting the tranny to the crossmember.
-
looks like I will have to swap out the rear diff to the 3.7 LSD if I stick w/the FT4WD gearset b/c the DR gearset is not long enough to engage the FT center diff. I will also be going with the locking center as opposed to the LSD EJ center. Decision is mostly based on a space issue. If I can secure a spot that I can leave it for a few weeks, I might go with the LSD center. What I foresee it being in the immediate future is a family car, primarily wife driven, maybe the occassional desert camping trip and snow driving. If I had time and space, and an extra $1000 lying around, I would do front & rear LSD w/locking center diff. I was looking at an OBX front LSD diff on ebay for less than $400 right now.
