  1. Yes. I can't help but think this will turn out with two more awesome Soobs on the USMB. Everyone will be a winner.
  2. Cool! 22. I'll set it to the channel in the morning to be ready. *oh and I didn't mean everyone HAD to have a CB. But it is nice to have when you are going to have the possibilty of needing help and just for smack talk on the dunes. Awesome you guys jumped in with and/or willing to add them. As for my prep. Just got my H4 conversion done and had to rewire the headlights (Subaru did a bang up job with how things backfed into each other with anything other than a 4656, even once I rearanged the wires to the right terminals, dang common+ switched-, not anymore!). All new heavy duty Hella relays and 10ga wire with xtravision H4 bulbs, and 14.8 un-choked volts at the bulbs. Like a nuke went off on the road in front of the old GL now with a sharp cutoff. Still gotta do the high beam circut but that'll be fast now that I have my method down. I think I'm gonna stay past dark and play for awhile out there sunday. Or maybe I should just brave it and camp sat night out there. There are those less insane than I trying to talk me out of it but I think I'm gonna do it. (my Fiancee hates cold weather camping and just grumbled about it.) If so I may go for this campground. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/recreation/tripplanning/tillnewp/camp/derrickroad-ohv.shtml Those who have been there know this is the area way in the back. Always thought it would be cool to camp there and the winter coast weather will be broken up a tad from all the trees there....?..... hehe Shouldn't be too crowded in January!
  3. Less than a week! Pretty stoked for this one. Think it's cause minus some I wish could make it (Mike take the day off!!!!). We got us the best group in a long time for down here in the Oregon. So for those that have CB's installed. What channel? We should figure this out before hand just because. So we can be tuned in on the way as we get closer. Using the date (17) is out as that is the normal over the road and base station channel around here. So it'll be busy already. We use 22 for the PNWbackroads runs. Always seems to be clear except for us. And those guys are not doing anything on the coast I know of this weekend. (they run monster radios, if they are anywhere in the PNW chatting we'll proly hear it ) And anybody with a Cobra (like me) turn the dang SoundTracker off! It squeals like a pig on transmit. Just ask Gregg. Even Cobra admits that was a mistake. For those that don't have a CB. I'd recommend if it's possible, to put one in. Not required, but the group almost ALWAYS seems to get split up at times out there throughout the day. Once I ran across two that split off hours earlier only to find them buried and in need of a pull. If they had a CB they could have called us (well just me, I was the last one out there and went to look for them) for help. Just sayin. Ok, everybody back to work gettin' thier Soobs ready.
  4. That worked out great! Ammo cans are good for all sorts of things. Would have given ya one but I'm all out of that size. Between me bolting them in the back of the GL for water/dustproof storage (great for gloves, clean rags, tape, wire, lights and such. That way that stuff is always clean when you need it) and Cynthia using them to carry her CD's for her DJ gigs at the club. I gotta go pick up some more myself.
  5. That's proly one of the roads going up to the area we were at. I think I may know the one you are talking about. I forget the name of it though. Leaving Colton headed for Estacada right? Closer to Estacada you can also get up into the area via Hillockburn Rd. Just keep following it up. The Colton side is alot of private timber company land. Some they don't mind you being on. Other places are marked with signs. Just gotta keep an eye out as there are full on roads that you are not supposed to drive on out there and they do not always have a gate. Only a sign that more often than not has been half shot away. Chaz and I at the end had to backtrack all the way out as the way to the main road we would have had to cut through a "no tresspassing" area of the forest road (and it could have just had a locked gate at the main road end anyway). And the several other roads we tried all dead ended. And rumor has it that at all gates and signs around Goat there are those hidden wildlife cameras going up. They get your plate # and send you a nice piece of paper with the amount you owe in the mail now. It's getting to be a tricky area to navigate even if you only intend to stay on the roads these days. But if you pay attention for signs and such you can still spend a day up there cruising around and be alright.
  6. Sounds good. My "non EJ'd" Soob and the fact I've had enough run in's with the blue and red disco in the rearview mirror headed to the coast over 2009. Means I'll proly just be pokin along like a grandma in a overloaded Yugo pulling a camper trailer full of rabid donkeys with half the cylinders dead and a healthy rod knock to get there.
  7. My 83 GL gets about 35mpg mixed city/hwy. With 205/75/14 tires. This was before adding the roofrack and spare tire up there though. So proly a bit less now. Calculated with a combo of GPS distance readings and gallons used. (as the odo/speedo is off now)
  8. You proly will not need a welded diff. I've ran open and welded out there at various times of the year and you really have to get in a weird spot for a welded diff to be of any help. (or an open diff to be of any hurt) Unless you really slide into one of the "ATV holes" at an angle you'll be fine open. But it's up to you. There are few chewed up spots out there that being locked in the rear can help. But there's also plenty of fun to be had where it'll really offer no advantage at all. hehe Looks like there are gonna be alot of EJ'd rides out there for this one. I'll be the slug of the group. You guys can all tow me up the big hills..... MrGlegacy: Yeah you'll need a flag. You can proly get one at the gas station/ATV shop that is there. But I would not count on the shop part being open that early in the winter. Plus it's easier figuring out where you wanna mount it if you get it ahead of time at an ATV shop around home. (usually around $20 or so with mount) I believe it's pretty much planned for the 17th.
  9. Cool. I'll try that. Never loses any coolant just sounds like bubbles pumping around in the core/heater hoses and not much heat. Got a new thermostat and such all worked fine before I drained it and refilled it.
  10. From the pics it looks too nice to be beating around in the dirt. (Would look cool in a Rallycross though )
  11. We only saw a group of 3 Toyotas the direction we went. They were playing in the same muddy gravel pit we were at. Sounds like even though the group got split up we all had fun. Well except for the XJ that broke his front axle in two. Ah...... Dana 30's.
  12. Stanley is always smiling. I think the only thing that could bring him down would be growing soft tissue. But he says sliding around on soft surfaces really gets a chuckle out him.
  13. Oh yeah and I almost forgot. Meet Stanley. I think he disturbs drive thru window workers. hehe But he keeps me company....... This was his first wheeling trip. Now he can't wait to go to Sand Lake in a couple weeks.
  14. May have air in it. I know after I did my engine swap and flushed and refilled it I still have close to no heat. (It used to cook me out) And can hear air bubbles "slurping" (I guess you could call it that) through the hoses and core. Still figuring out how to get them out of there. I have my radiator topped up but there is still air not wanting to work it's way out. And basicly keeping the hot coolant from the core or something. One guy told me on his he picked up the front of the car with a forklift and ran the car to get the air to go up to the radiator. Said it worked, but I don't have a forklift. I'm sure there is a simpler way a Guru proly knows about. I'm thinking one ot those flush kit "T" fittings in the upper heater hose at the firewall and let air out there.... I don't know, still need to think about it some.
  15. Yeah these days though they are shutting most of it down. I heard someone tried to light the radio towers on fire at the summit (great viewpoint) So now the lower gates are locked so you can't even get close to them. And I put out a fire in the trees up there one night I went up. (that was also the last time I was able to get up there) And lots of signs are going up. We were really keeping an eye out for them so we didn't drive past any. Goat was always more of a stay on the roads type of area with a few trails you could go on (I had read a FS officers blog saying Goat was never really illegal for off roading, but they never really encouraged it either, but that is gonna change). Lucky thing is there are alot of roads that are half washed out and more trail like. But soon it'll mostly all be off limits. And the only roads to get to will be the ones like in the first pic. All the good exploring is disappearing around there. It's in it's last days. But! We are supposed to be getting some real, marked trails around here. Not as good as TSF they say, but it should still be fun once they build them.
  16. Good times. We ran into alot less snow today than I thought we would find as well.
  17. We went towards the Colton side of Goat (SW side) a ways. And up another road headed east I think a ways. I still need to download my GPS into the computer. We ended up running into alot of closed off parts. Dead ends everywhere. Still had fun though.
  18. Well by some new years miracle I sprung awake at 7am. Didn't get a morning group shot but I think if I remember right there were: 2 XJ's 2 Toy Pickups 2 EA81 GL Wagons 1 Outback 1 Wrangler (well they don't call them Wranglers anymore, now it's like a TJ or something) So right off the bat after the first stoping point once we got up there we lost daredevil1166 and mthoodsub. They took off down the road I think to check things out while one of the XJs was having front locker tweaking done, we followed but we never ran across them again. You guys alright?! So two down. Then the said XJ just plain busted the knuckel/balljoints/axle/ect. on the first real trail. Some tweaking and it was limpable down to a spot a trailer could get to and the other XJ went with him. Two more down. We continued on. The TJ and remaining Toyota forged on in front and went up a trail. Chaz and I walked up it to find them making good use of thier winches and skinny pedals. They wanted to keep exploring that trail so we went back to our Soobs and continued on down the road. Two more down, just down to Chaz and I. There was snow here and there. Lots of wind, mud, fun. We got to a really gooey gravel pit (more like a mud farm) and played there. Then went up a road that turned into a trail that was all gates and dead ends once we got off that. So we backtracked and played at the gravel pit some more and then headed out. Found a good spot to air back up with the sweet meat scent of a bloated rotting elk corpse to keep us company in the dark. Then headed out. Got a few pics but it was nasty out so not much getting out for pic taking. Looks much dirtier in person. Plus the rain and wind was washing it off almost as fast as I could apply it.
  19. Heck yeah! Keep up with what Ryan is doing. He posts on the R/C crawler board (ORCRC.com) for most of his 1:1 runs. So I'm gonna try to make it as much as I can.
  20. I'll have to remember to pull over to call. Remember, in Oregon cellphones on ears in cars are illegal as of midnight. I plan on making it on time though if I can.......
  21. In! If the Soob holds up I'll be there.
  22. Awesome. I'll work for it. Yeah 9:30 in Estacada is not too early. I'll give ya a call. If your going up Hillockburn I can catch up if peeps wanna get rolling and I'm still a few min out. I'll even bring "Stanley" (You'll see)
  23. If I'm not hung the heck over too bad I'll be there. Right now though I'm way into a 101 proof 5th od whiskey. and enjoying it immensely
  24. Yeah, couple cool guys. The Sammi owner also has/had a Mog. This was the first time I've gotten to wheel with him in larger than 1/10th scale. Was funny they were having a harder time than I did. But it was mainly a tire thing I think with all the ice and crap.
