  1. hehe "speedholes". For a long time I thought my cousin and I were the only ones that used the term. Then I found the internet... Seriously though. Those vents look to be perfectly functional and simple for those that need some ventage somewhere.
  2. Not that I know of. I'm not part of the 4x4 club that has planned it. Though they are very limited on where they announce it. I think only on their forums, and the PNWBA forums. ... I've said too much. They are coming for me!
  3. Nice. Looks alot better than mine. Though all mine does is hold the CB antenna mount and the spare tire. So I only wanted it small and low profile. Lights for the sides will come later.
  4. The Slab is up near Yakima. Acres and acres of desert terrain. Some rocks. Hill climbs. "Rollover hill". Stuff like that. Nothing too hardcore except for a few trails and hills. All routes are optional. From what I hear it private property and the guy is an old Motocross racer. So he keeps it open for off-road fun as long as people respect it. We went last year and it was pretty fun stuff. One of the 4x4 clubs up there does a run every year. And those of us on the PNWBA forum get invited.
  5. I may be able to make a later in the month trip. There is another trip I am planning on going on in Feb and I still don't know if I'll get through DEQ next week. And I just blew about $80 on new wheel bearings for the rear. So there is also the chance the Soob could get stuck behind the shop and tarped till summer . (lack of more $$$ I can throw at it right now, and it's only a weekend toy so it has to be first to get cut)
  6. Yeah let us all know when you guys are coming down. I know I'll try to plan to come camp and such too if I can.
  7. Nice vids. The first one does not do the size of that hill justice. I had to run about 5500 rpm halfway up in 2nd. And slam it into 1st to just barley make it up. Little EA81 is a hard worker though. And Sand Lake is only every so often. Then it's back to idling around trails. Gregg on the other hand. Finds a jump in the middle.
  8. Good times! I'll post a few pics whenever I get a chance. Having "Fakeinit" trojan issues on my comuter right now so it's off the net. Dang thig took over admin rights and wont even let me log into windows now.
  9. Yeah $5 for the day permit and it's just given to one of those drop boxes so it can't make change.
  10. Ditched the 4656 sealed beams on my GL for some H4's. Then made two seperate wiring harnesses for high and low beam with 10ga wire and big sealed Hella relays. (This is only the low beam harness.) Installed. (Again only the low beam harness in the pic) I did the high beam tonight. Everything works like a charm. And doing the harnesses just about doubled the light out of the headlights. Over 14 volts at the bulb running. At least after I figured out how Subaru did the stock headlight wiring. Hint: the + is common, the - is switched. And you have to seperate them as in trigger the high beams off the inner high beam stock wiring, and the low beams off the outer low beam wiring. Don't just use the outer headlight plug ti trigger both high and low. Otherwise things tend to crossflow and it all comes on with the low beams. I would explain more but plenty of how to's can be found on the net for heavy duty headlight harnesses and then you just have to break out the voltmeter and figure out your terminals. I had some links but they are not on this computer. Anyway, it's nice to have an even beam pattern with a sharp cutoff.
  11. I'm pretty much ready. Just gotta pack stuff up for my little camping adventure out there. May be crazy, but I find it fun to camp out on the sand in the rain and wind. Or at least I think I do........ Don't know when I'll head out of here and show up out there tomarrow. I'm pretty much making this weekend up as I go along. But I'll be trying to meet up with you guys Sunday. I'll have the CB on 22 as well. If I don't show at the gas station I'll have made camp at the north end of the dunes at the Derrick road campground or whatever it's called. (link to the FS site for it a few of my posts back.) So you guys can come wake my sleeping in (proly hungover from drinking alone in the dark after the midnight vehicles off the sand cerfew) butt up. Just pull up to my Soob and rev up those EJ's!
  12. Aww that sucks. the move is important though. Yeah the EA81 uses the big one piece cartridge bearing in the back. Like $75-$100 or so everwhere I've found and no one has them. I did find them on Rock Auto for like $30 each though. Still need to get to the bank so I can put the money in (I mainly only deal in cash these days so the account is always empty) and order them.
  13. Yes air will be needed. There is a hose at the gas station but you have to drive a couple miles to get to it. Don't use the 2ways very much anymore. Could always bring 'em and lend one to another that does not have a CB, that way ya can at least have some communication. As for me. I put on my new shocks and realized that that rear wheel bearing is more sloppy than I thought...... I'll proly just use a needle grease gun to get this run out of it. Don't think I'll find new bearings for an old GL locally in time to have them in for the run anyway. (plus they are $$$$$$$$$$, though I found them online for cheap) So it looks like a few of us are still working on our Soobs so we can go! I'll be there. Drove a dodge stratus from Iowa to Detroit once and all the rollers in one front wheel bearing were GONE, I mean fine dust, it was axle shaft in steering knuckle. That was a loud, crunchy, wobbly ride. But the girl who's car it was said to keep going, didn't want to pay for a tow. So going to Sand Lake on a slightly sloppy bearing would not be the stupidest thing I've done.....
  14. Cool. Thanks for the reply. The used Y-pipe I have may or may not do the trick. If not I'll order up a new generic CAT and weld it in. I know what I'm doing next week.
  15. That's a good deal. I got one without the spout for about $45 from one of the expedition sites awhile back. Non CARB of course. And the funny thing is the older lever style ones (like what I got and you proly got) seal better than the new plastic screw on cap CARB ones. Go figure. And 2.5 gal will generally get a Soob far enough to find more fuel. I have gotten out far enough to use it. (that was a fun trip, 13 hours on trails and backroads, not a soul or gas station in site.)
  16. I'm getting ready to go through the DEQ (I'm just in the line out here) before the end of the month. '83 GL EA81. I know I have to put a new CAT on it. Got an old Y-pipe given to me from an EJ swap I'm gonna try first with a "good?" CAT. I'll buy a new one if it's shot. But my real question is about the air injection. My current engine has it all removed. And last time they didn't even look under the hood but it was on and not blocked off with the "$.50 fix". That old engine had a brand new CAT on it that died a crunchy death the second time I took it up FB5, passed with flying colors. Will it make that much difference on the sniff test? I know I've read that chances are it's not working right anyway after all these years. I still have it on the old engine sitting on the stand in the garage. (nuts at the heads don't want to let go though, reason I didn't just transfer it over during the swap, and the reason I've kept the old engine around) So I can proly get it transfered over if I have to. Just trying to make this as quick and painless as possible. Especially after they almost doubled the DEQ/tag fees in Portland. And I went and waited til the last couple weeks my tags are good to think about it. Did some searching but didn't seem to find the answer I needed. Did find some stuff about a 50% alcohol mix that seemed like a last resort though........ Any input would be great.
  17. I'd also go with the block heater. The drain the oil and set it next to the stove overnight thing used to be done by Alaskan bush pilots way back in the day. But a cheap block heater and extension cord will be much easier and such. And you can just drape the cord over the driver side mirror if you think there may be a chance of forgetting to unplug it. (I've seen vehicles still pugged in, backing up. Makes a nice loud noise once they run out of cord and the plug catches the edge of the hood..... )
  18. I've heard of doing this many times. Never tried it though. Might have to try it out sometime.
  19. I don't know which era of GL you are working on (EA81 or EA82), but on the EA81 they are easy to replace. Held in by spring clips. Did mine and it didn't take much effort at all. Just used the vice and the right sized socket to push them in/out. They were about $15 or so each. Think I just hit up Napa or something for them. I know the EA82s are a bit more of a pain though. Glad I got a good driveline for my 5spd swap.
  20. Great pics! Man I love your Soob. Just clean and ready to get the job done.
  21. Planning on doing something spectacular out there? Good stuff to have for the sand all joking aside. Remember, if the jack needs using on the sand you'll need a base for it that won't just sink. I know they make soft terrain bases for them but a chunk of 2x12 usually works well too. I carry a piece so we should be all set. I just ordered new shocks. I'll pick 'em up in the morning and put 'em on tomarrow night. With those and if the back end of the dunes are blown just right... Maybe I'll jump it. Sand Lake is my "let er rip!" spot. Blow out those new shocks. (Maybe. Have the last few times I've been out there but man the landings if you don't make the downside of the dune just right.....) I'm getting a giddy for sunday. hehe
  22. hehe, yeah! I like Qman's and jbbvw's. Keep from having smashed PVC pipe all over a tight trail. Been wanting to do a snorkle for quite awhile myself. Though I've been through some long deep stuff that had water up splashing the windshield, coming in thorugh the doors, ect. And been lucky to not have an engine problem yet (finds a piece of wood to knock on). Drained the diff a couple times though. Keeping the right wake in front of you helps. But if you have to stop... Snorkle time.
  23. It's ok, you got a nice Toyota. It'll add a bit of flavor. I looked around for some of the Barview campgrounds. The one I looked at was the same $$ as the area at SL I'm looking to stay at. (see link above) But it dispersed. So you still pay the fee. But there are no "marked sites" So we could spread out, cram together however we felt. Without some park host coming along and making each of us stay in our spot or something. Just a thought. The spot you guys have picked out may be different than the one I looked at up in Barview though. I wanna be able to get some night runs on the dunes in as well (till 12am anyway, then the "cerfew" and the party starts ) so camping at them makes sense for me. I wanna stay easy and close to SL as I'll proly be showing up more towards evening. Maybe earlier. And last I checked on the SL ATV boards, the place has been pretty dead the past few weeks, so bonus there.
  24. Just looked back at the first post (he has been updating it) A dozen so far. We got us a group! Hope everyone that wants to can make it. Subaru invasion at the dunes! All your sand are belong to us!
  25. Cool. I'll know more about if I'm gonna camp as it gets closer. If it's just supposed to be super nasty out there sat night I may (maybe) pass on the idea. But some rain will be no problem for me. It happens in the NW. If the tent seems like a bad idea I'll just sleep in the car. I'll keep up on weather and such. Looks to not be any worse Sat night than it will be Sunday so far: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=pacific+city%2C+oregon&searchType=WEATHER Been wanting to get some winter camping in. Won't be snow, but it'll do. Could wander up into the coast range and just find a spot. But I figure it'll be easier to just spend the $15 and hit up one of the campgrounds at SL being it will not be crowded like it is in the summer. Ahh, you can swap out the 4spd as it's convenient.
