Looks like a fun trip. One of these days I'd like to go there. Always avoided it due to distance but the Soob is running smooth these days. (It always felt like it was gonna self destruct on the freeway, but never did with the old engine in it)

Do-It-Yourself Bedliner...
TeamCF replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My whole interior is already loud. Nothing but sheetmetal right now. I ditched the worn out carpet and headliner (the headliner looked good from the driver's seat, but once I peeked inside. Like an Umbrella Corp. lab experiment in there) last year, rear seat went too as I didn't need it. I kept the door panels, dash, and front seats. Only thing I've done floor wise is throw a couple heavy duty winter floor mats up front. Good to know on the texture. -

Been wanting to do the interior of the GL with that stuff. (stripped down to seats and dash for the past year) Prep will be the key. Seen Jeeps with that type of stuff covering the inside and it makes a great wheeler interior. Looks good let us know how it holds up. -
Looks like some fun. I was home rebuilding my carb. (even if I could have made it, I couldn't have made it) Lovin' the section that all the vid was taken at.

WCSS 11 Date and Location!
TeamCF replied to WCSS's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
That bottom one is my GL. And the only thing it has done to it to help on that sort of thing is 26" all terrains. Open diff, stock suspension. -
Firestone Destination A/T, they come in 14" sizes. 225/70/14 measures 26.5" I'm running the Falken Radial AP. They are an RV tire that has a mild AT tread. Kind of a 4 row knobby type thing. Not as many plies as the better A/Ts and such but only about $80 a pop and I love them so far. Mine are 205/75/14 (26.1" tall). They come in all kinds of bigger sizes to. Only problem is they typically are a special order from the factory.

Cleaned it out some today to get it organized again for camping at WCSS. Pretty much emptied out. Most (but not all) of the stuff that is in the car at all times. (my second shackel is on the car) Some back in. All of it back in. (except the antifreeze, and I really only carry that right now till I get the cracked block welded. It's just in case the JB lets go) I've jumped it multiple times out at Sand Lake (I found a good small dune with a kicker halfway up one side in the back corner you hit at 50 and land going down the backside.) And everything stays put. You hear a couple things bounce around here and there but the stuff I don't want flying around stays in it's spot. (not had 2.7 gal of gas or a hatchet hit me in the head yet...)

Check the meet/greet section for more info but it's in Stevenson, WA next weekend.

Ahh it's proly cause it's in the club section of the forum. I think it's the only part that is "locked". I'll get on posting up all the info. Time for a copy/paste.

This just in at the 4x4 board I'm on. http://sore4x4.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3761 I found it through a posting a guy made cause he got a ticket for off roading in the Larch Mt. area outside Vancouver. Someone pointed him to it. It's all illegal in that area at the moment. (there are legal trails for ATV's in the Jones Creek area, but there are no 4x4 trails unless you want to pay a big fine and get booted.) But next year will be different. Funny how it's mentioned that the biggest enemy they had in getting this going was other 4x4 enthusiasts. Proly due to trying to convince them to stay out long enough to get the deal made. Score one for us though. EDIT: As the link above requires registration. Here you go. (the pics I can't access to copy though, sorry) From the Piston's Wild Board 4x4 TRAILS ARE ON THE WAY ! ! ! How The Idea Got Started... In the beginning, this project started with 3 friends hanging out together working on their Jeeps. Three friends who were frustrated with having to drive such long distances (and pay ridiculous high fuel prices) to go 4-wheeling when there was a beautiful, massive forest right in our back yard - the spectacular Yacolt Burn. So -- we set a goal, formed a club, created strategies, rallied the troops and never, never, ever looked back... It Was a Dark and Stormy Night The most difficult part of this journey by far was staying the course even when everyone who was supposedly "in the know" actually laughed out loud at us and told us that there was absolutely NO WAY we would ever get legal 4x4 trails in the Yacolt Burn. It had been tried time and time again and failed repeatedly. This project has been a long and stressful journey for the charter members of our club who engaged with this project over 2 ½ years ago. During the past 2 ½ years, our club members have invested well over 5,000 hours into meetings, clean-ups, forest watch patrols and educational efforts on the ground and via the internet. We have made some wonderful new friends and partners (that was the best part), stepped deeply into more than one political pile of poo (that was the scariest part) and unfortunately made a few enemies along the way (that was the worst part). The craziest thing of all - the battles that we had to really armour up for were not with the environmentalists, not with the government agencies and not with the other user groups -- it was in our own sandbox - with other 4x4 enthusiasts (that is the sad part) . . . Thankfully, due to the publicity of last year’s Cruise-In as well as the 2007 & 2008 clean up events we have recruited some new, very energetic members. We know that these new members care as much about this project as the founding members do and have been able to provide some much needed relief to the original members who have continually turned their lives upside down to make this project a reality. We even found some time to actually go 4-wheelin’ this year... Get to the Good Stuff It’s been a very long road, but we are happy to announce that we have officially received the approval from the Commissioner of Public Lands to move forward with building 4x4 trails in the Yacolt Burn. We will still need to maintain some patience as we await the completion of the proposed trail design from the consultants (due early September) and following that we will need to wait for the SEPA (environmental impact) to run it’s course (October). We do not expect any problems from SEPA as the planning committee followed the environmental requirements to the last little detail. The Challenges Still Ahead The DNR has a very limited amount of funding to put towards this project – so almost every mile of trail that we want to build will have to be supported by fund raising efforts and we will then have to increase our level of volunteerism to maintain those trails. Ready, Set, Go ! We expect to begin preparing existing trails that are already on the ground as early as November 2009. Our goal is to have at least 20 miles of 4x4 trails ready and open to the general public before the 2010 recreation season (opening May 1). We will work on construction of additional “challenging” features as weather, funding and volunteer hours allow. That should bring us up to a total of 25 miles of dedicated 4x4 trails. Not Just for 4x4's . . . Also included in this planning process is the addition of another 20+ miles of ATV and dirt bike trails being added to the existing 14 miles at Jones Creek. Relax - It's a 10 Year Plan Another hurdle we are experiencing is the loss of the NOVA funds (grant dollars) that would have provided funding for the campground facilities and trailhead at 4-corners. The estimated cost of this project is well over $2 million dollars. All of the fund-raisers in the world are not going to raise that kind of money. So – we will be focusing on building trails and small trailheads while we await the return of the NOVA funds. No worries here either though - this planning process has been based on a 10 year plan - that means we have 10 years to find the grant dollars to fund this facility. In addition to the $1209.38 that was raised at last year’s Cruise-In, the members of Piston’s Wild Motorsports have raised an additional $319.63 bringing the fund total to $1,529.01. The additional funds were raised by club members who recovered hulk vehicles from the Yacolt Burn and recycled them for cash. The owners of those vehicles donated the titles to Piston’s Wild Motorsports. At last night's "Hot August Night" event - we received an additional $54 in cash donations bringing our grand total to $1,583.01. ALL of those funds will go direcly to building motorized trails in the Yacolt Burn. We Still Need Your Help . . . Although $1583 is a great start we still need everyone's help to bring this dream of 4x4 trails in the Yacolt Burn to fruition. Please be sure to register for the forum so that you will receive up the the minute information about trail building activities - we will do our best to advertise and plan work parties in advance. In addition, please join us for two very important upcoming events in September and October. September 26, 2009 (Saturday) 7th Annual "Pick Up the Burn" See additional information under the Club Events section This is an opportunity for the 4x4 commuity to come together with the other user groups of the Yacolt Burn Forest and continue to build strong relationships that will maintain the high level of cooperation that has made this project possible. October 4, 2009 (Sunday) Piston's Wild Motorsports 4x4 Cruise-In @ Woody's 4x4 in Vancouver, WA This event is our primary fund raising activity that will provide the dollars needed to get a jump start on building 4x4 trails later this Fall. Bring your 4x4, bring your donations, bring your friends and bring your family - this is guaranteed to be a great time for everyone and an opportunity to celebrate the anticipation of LEGAL 4x4 trails in the Yacolt Burn... For additional information about the activities of Piston’s Wild Motorsports Club please go to: http://www.pistonswild.com Thank you again to all of the 4x4 enthusiasts who have supported our tiny little club in this monstrous effort - your contributions have been greatly appreciated by us all. We look forward to continuing to work closely with all of you on the building and maintenance of the Yacolt Burn 4x4 Trail System for many, many years to come. We would also like to especially thank the staff from the Department of Natural Resources who have worked so tirelessly on this planning process to ensure that ALL of the interested user groups of the Yacolt Burn were integrated into the plan. Specifically: Brian Poehlein, Julie Sackett, Mary Coacher, Jessica Kimmick and our planning facilitator Walt Pulliam. Of course the reason the planning process was such a success was because of the excellent representation in the room from all of the various user groups: Joe McLoughlin (Jones Creek Trail Riders) - Dirtbikes / ATV's Barbara Vertz (Cougar Area Trail Seekers) - ATV's Bill Manbeck (Pacific NW 4-Wheel Drive Association) - 4x4's Gary Collins (Back Country Horsemen) - Equestrian Jon Brobst (Yacolt Burn Neighbor) - Dougan Falls Area Phil Delaney (Lives in the Yacolt Burn) - Naturalist Pat Campbell (WA Trails Assoc & Sierra Club) - Environmentalist Jason Ding (Cold Creek Mountain Bikers) - Mountain Biking Crystal Crowder (Piston's Wild Motorsports) - Multi-Motorized Chris King - Non-Affiliated Multi-Sport Recreationalist Darren Huddleston - Non-Affiliated Multi-Sport Recreationalist In the spirit of cooperation, the individuals listed above continually searched for recreation solutions for the Yacolt Burn that would include the needs of ALL of the user groups while still maintaining the identity and integrity of each of the individual recreation opportunities in the forest. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Yacolt Burn 4x4 Trail Project. I can be reached at (360) 606-1648. I recently changed it a bit so I had better spots for my jerry can and water jugs. But I used some 2x4's (used wood as it's relatively light and easy to work with/ modify as I find different gear needs) and built a frame that is bolted to the floor in the back. That has eye screws all around it. I use heavy bungee cords criss-crossed to hold everything down. Only things I hear bouncing is the couple things that don't make it under the bungees. Remember I don't have a back seat or carpet in my Soob anymore. (or a headliner) and more interior panels are destined for the bin. (most are cracked/broke/faded/ect. anyway) So getting to good spots to bolt into the sheetmetal is easy on mine. And there is tons of room to spread everything out in one layer. Making anything I need to get to easy. I'm gonna be cleaning and reorganizing it all sometime this week for WCSS. I'll take some pics and throw them up. Oh. And I'm thinking of bolting a few ammo boxes down back there too.

Nice. One of these days I'll get around to building a snorkel for my old GL. I've had a habit in the past of taking it in over the hood. Got lucky so far.
-
Not quite an expert. I still do some "where's this go?" type exploring around there and got myself denyed by a closed gate (that I was on the backside of, a truck drove up to the other side from Hood River at the same time, we both wanted through.) and a washed out bridge. But I know a few places to play around there. Mostly rough, loose, rocky, powerline trails. Scoobyclimbs knows a bunch of places in the area as well. Last time I was up I saw a bunch of rock buggies on trailers leaving the area, headed down to Zig Zag. I have no clue where they were at playing.

Ship? I thought you were close by...... there is a "Happy Valley" right near me. 202K is about 118K less than the one that came out of it.
-
Will do. Proly have it TIG'ed. Gonna see if I know anyone with one that can come to the house with it. I got 220 here. But I would hate to have to pull the whole thing again. Or if maybe Gregg has a TIG at his shop.... I could tear it down have it welded and put it back together there. It had to be a "do it now" repair and fresh JB was all that was available short notice with enough time for it to harden. I have ( ) to wheel it tomarrow . Everything is put back together but I'm waiting until morning to fill it with coolant and such. Just gonna let it sit and harden. Meanwhile I'll arrange a better fix.
-
Crap, too late. it's on there and sticking like sap on fingers. :-\ Anyway here was the crack. I think my plan is to rebuild the engine that came out of it and hope this one holds just long enough to get it done.
-
I'm JBing it. Gonna go for broke and see how much time it buys me. Prep will be the key. Give me some time I can wheel it while I obtain the next heart.
-
Hey gwilson87. How much for that engine and how many miles did it have on it. I started mine up today and watched the coolant spray out of the crack. This sucks, the thing runs beyond perfect. I may never find a stronger engine short of calling up RAM. And mine does have a hose going from bhind the alt to the manifold under the carb on the driver's side. Then another going from off the block under the carb on the pass side to the manifold. Niether were leaking.
-
I'll see about some tomarrow. And thanks for the replies guys.
-
I found it but it was not behind the alt (see my edited reply above). I have no hoses behind the alt for coolant. there is a plug in the top of the manifold back there though. (it is not leaking)
-
An option. i gotta see how this one pans out first though. I know my carb and such is working good so I may get by on the emissions thing. (Passed with flying colors with the old engine that had a rod knock)
-
I'll have to look but I don't remember such a hose on mine. The intake manifold came off my old engine. Ok i went out and looked again. It has a small hose fromt the top of the block in the middle behind the disty that goes to the manifold on the pass side. And it is a coolant hose. I may replace it tomarrow. I also went and hosed down the engine real good to make sure all old collant was gone. I'll run it in the morning and check for new leaks. Maybe some was sitting up ther hiding and fooled me (I hope).

If it's a known good runner I may take you up on that. this one was supposed to go into another guy's project but he never got around to it and sold it to me. He thought it was all fine. And I fully think he did not know about it's leak. But he never actually ran it.
