Getting to the clutch trans removal question.
TeamCF replied to TeamCF's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Oh my flywheel was pristine. Still had some of the roughness in it from it's last resurfacing so I went lightly and evenly over it with a buzz sander and some emery cloth. Clutch wasn't really worn out. Just getting jammed up by bits of spring falling out of it. Yeah I just sucked it up and payed extra for a local one. And even then had missing parts (release bearing was missing, and mine is shot) so they had to order me a new one. Proly gonna pick up my 5 speed today. But I'm not planning on putting it in for awhile while I gather more parts and do a big change on the car. Think I'm gonna fix my wobbly seat and tear out the carpeting too. And if I'm real ambitious (meaning feeling like a JY trip), do the twin handbrake mod. Looking at it under the console it's so easy, just need another lever and such. Twin brake, with locked rear..... -

Comfy...... I've slept in the back of a dodge dakota before for a weekend long paintball war. (we used to have huge monster games out at a field I played at in MI. we had old WW2 personel carriers and everything.) Those bed ribs suck. -

Awesome. Thanks So the only trans jacks I'm familiar with are the tall ones for when the car is lifted over your head. Your's must be all lo-pro so it fits under a car on jackstands? (thinking that's the kind McDave was talking about to, the lo-pro kind) -

 Good plan. Thank you. I'll dig the hoist out of the shop and run with it when I'm slaping it all back in. This is what I get when I just go for it the hard way. -

I have a big engine hoist. Got it for The diesel truck years ago. Kinda overkill for the Soob but it would work. And I really wish I would have removed the engine. (thought about it ) I hate draining and dealing with coolant but it would have been worth it. I got it all apart. (In my infinite impatience, I posted. Then proceeded to remove the trans anyway. Same reason I have a problem with ordering parts, I want them to have it in stock now when I walk in.... ) No problem out. In is gonna be tricky though. But I think I already have a plan devised. My clutch still had some life in it before getting into the rivets. But the springs in the disc were broken and pieces were jamming it up. Release bearing is toast too. The ears are half worn off by the fork. Fork looks good though. Flywheel is good (whew..) I hit it with some emery to take the glaze off. -
So I'm under the car. Leaking jack under the front of the trans supporting it. Everything disconnected, gear oil drained. All bolts out except one on each side for the crossmember. When I had a thought. Could I just remove the two nuts for the trans mounts to the crossmember, and pushup and slide back the tranny to get at my clutch? Leaving the crossmember to hold it up? (and proly a better jack to balance it) Or is there not enough room. (It's and EA81 4 speed D/R) It's just one of those situations where I have limited space under the car (jackstands), and that thing is gonna land on my chest. If the guy next door didn't have his Infinity up on his hoist I would have just did this over there and used his trans jack. But I'm doing it the hard way and only have me, myself, and I for help. :-\ And I remember how heavy the trans was in my Altima when I did this, and how much fun it was landing on my chest.

Getting ready to seal up and install "new" engine

And a new set came in the package with the engine. Along with some other gaskets 'n' bits. -

Yeah. I've been "dealering" as much as is affordable. Or if it's a "I only wanna do this once" or critical part. On stuff I don't mind taking a chance on I'll sometimes go for aftermarket. With the gaskets I figured Fel Pro was good. But I'll get some genuines for it. hehe in pulling my trans to be ready to pop the clutch in I'm finding all kinds of things to replace. Bad driveshaft joints for one. Looks like it definitely will be staying the old engine and trans for awhile. Get some use out of my new parts and time to replenish the funds for "The big project". No rush on the swaps anyway just a want ("I want I want I want!" )more than a need. So I may as well take my time and do it right. Engine, trans, lift. All in one shot. -

Alright then. Dealer it is. Have to give them a call in the morning. I'll RTV the oil pan too. I've always had pretty good luck with only RTV in some places you would normaly want a gasket in the past as well. Just wanting to do it up good as it's sitting on my stand real easy to work on right now. Thinking about it, I'll proly just throw my clutch in. And put my "new" engine and 5 speed in at the same time (with another new clutch) as a winter project. Meanwhile I can gather bits and parts in a more relaxed manner. Double checking my list, making a big pile of Subaru guts to install. I hate getting into a project only to be slowed up by a midway parts run/order cause I forgot something. -
So I'm on the Parts America site. Looking at EA81 gaskets. And they have the "Fel Pro Conversion/Lower Gasket Set" Part # CS8818 http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=FEL&MfrPartNumber=CS8818 Like $48.00 or so. Looks to have all the oil pump, oil pan, water pump, crank seals and a few others. (I already have the valve cover gaskets *gonna try GD's RTV trick*, intake and such) I recently read on here that Fel Pro no longer makes the set. Wondering if I should try ordering it. Plus I gotta wait two weeks shipping (unless I want to spend $60 bucks 2nd day) and I want to install it over this week with my clutch so I can go wheeling next weekend. (would have just left the old engine in for now and went today *itchin' to wheel* but I had to special order my clutch) Anyplace around town (PDX) with good old Soob gasket stock? The price is good, but I'm way too impatient. (but'll suck it up if it's to good to pass up)

Thats a nice pic right there. Thinkin' everybody needs to quit arguing about it and go out and enjoy what they have to wheel at the moment. I know I'd be out there right now if I didn't have to wait till tomarrow night to get my clutch. Since when is a Subaru clutch a "rare special order" item in the NW?! (seems to be in Portland) See, makes my wish there was a Yota sitting in the driveway right now to hit the woods in.

Yes! I have to admit when I first had seen the thread I was hoping to open it and find the back seat of a wagon replaced with a loveseat. But I knew better. -
So I'm gathering parts to do a 5 speed swap. But it's gonna take a little longer (proly swap it sometime this winter) than I want to wait to have my Roo back on the trails before the swap can begin. So until then I've gotten a new clutch to get it going again. (Been about 15 years since I've done a clutch, the Roo looks easy as pie though. ) So my question. Can I just get a new disc that matches the 5 speed and use the rest of the parts in the new kit (I just bought) when I put the 5 speed in? Or am I going to be buying a whole new kit for the 5 speed? My Roo is an EA81 4 speed D/R. (225mm clutch) I'm getting a D/R 5 speed with flywheel, clutch (of unknown condition), driveshaft. Probably gonna lift it some when I do the swap. After thinking about it. I'd proly have to switch the pressure plate as well to be the same as the disc. Think I answered my own question.

The fact that VW tore it up rocks. Not afraid to put some scratches on those shiny wheels in the name of fun. The way it always should be. Would have been afraid of that exposed intercooler though. -
My wagon has one too. May have been a standard thing on the GL trim level.... ? (not much knowledge of what came with what)

Low Voltage Gremlin, EA81, New Alternator
TeamCF replied to Mikldom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'll be interested to see what is said as well. Mine is doing kind of the same thing. I can kick on my 100 watt overhead lights and my fogs and it's fine (both added in circuts, maybe the volt meter in the dash does not "sense" them). But just turning on the running lights it drops. The heater and radiator fans will drop it into the red. Hit the rear defrost, it'll almost stall the car. Click on the turnsignal. It drops everytime the light clicks on. ect..... I'm thinking as it's dropping only with the factory systems. It has to be some bad connections. (car proly has tons of them) And going over all of the wiring may be the only solution. I've taken apart the cluster and cleaned/protected all the little connections for the guages (volt and fuel didn't work when I bought it, tons of corrosion in the dash). But it still acts up every so often. Thinking of throwing a GM 100 amp in it but I don't think it will solve it. (still proly a good idea though) -
Score. Wierd it had the same color & intrerior scheme as my wagon. And then ended up rattle can black. Guess nobody likes that factory "cream yellow".

Here's some of the whole trip for me. From Sand Lake. To washed out forest roads. To WCSS 10. Had a blast, drove home on a blown clutch, and loved the whole time. -
Bummer. Hope you got it going. I called out a few times here and there on the CB. Kinda figured something must have happened and just hoped it all turned out good. TSF is closed to wheelers right now and my clutch gave out. Made it to the show and home anyway with the shuting it off at lights method.

WCSS10 Camping Regulations....?

hehe that'll do it. Nice hot turbo cooking. Almost bought an auto cookbook. Had recipes and where to put them on the engine and how long of a drive to cook them. Never got it, but for heating things up I know of a couple spots on my EA81 that would hold a nice little packet of food. -
