Everything looks to be a go for me. So later today or early in the morning I'll be headed out to Sand Lake. Friday at 10:00 meet at TSF. Friday night/Saturday WCSS 10. CB channel 5 all weekend. (backup 10) MY FRS radio croaked on me. Maybe some duct tape will hold the antenna in.... Just wish I would have gotten ahold of the Snap On guy when he was in Sandy monday. I have no way to change stub axles (or take any out for spares from another diff) if I need to. So I'm going 100% spare part-less. (unless you count a roll of duct tape and a roll of heavy bailing wire as spare parts... I know I do.) Then if $$ holds out I gotta decide if I'm gonna hit TSF sunday. Or Barlow Road to some mud pits. Two different fullsize groups going that want me to tagalong.

So far it's lookin' like it's gonna be pretty dang perfect. Too much sun and heat always ruins a good outing for me. But rain does too.

TeamCF replied to mykingcrab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That rack looks like it was made for your car. Very nice. -
Yeah I have no problem with wandering off on foot to the bathrooms in the middle of the night. Just have to watch out for sandworms...... I had read that the toilet thing was a result of people dumping thier wastewater from thier RV's before leaving the sand. ....... But I don't see how making everyone have a PT changes the fact that the jerks are still going to dump thier water on the sand. People being morons, forced them to make a law, that does nothing for the exact problem. If you go to the Sand Lake site, it's right on the front page. http://www.sandlakeoregon.com In the end I may not even have to worry about it. :-\ Found out friday and saturday are going to be spent helping someone move that HAS to have thier stuff out this week. So I'll proly be out at Sand Lake on thursday for a day trip. (might go out wednesday too) And I'll proly wander back out to TSF on sunday if I can. A group of Jeeps and Yota's are going out and any Soobs that want to tag along are cool. But I'm stuck in PeeTown Fri & Sat. ============================= Trying to convince them they don't need use of me or the pickup. We'll see how it goes. *fingers crossed*

Ok. No camping on the sand unless you have a portable toilet. Up to $5,000 fine. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/recreation/ohv/sandlake/orders/order12-2008-01-07sandlake-camping-toilets.pdf So I guess we're gonna have to reserve some campsites. I just got unexcited about the camping part. I like to just show up pay my fee at the box and pick a spot to pitch it. Screw it. I'll just show up and if I can't get a spot. I'll just sleep in the car on the side of the road.

BUMP noise in rear...What is it?
TeamCF replied to Born_a_Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a bumping/clunking noise coming from the back corner of my wagon awhile back. And it would turn into a dull, hollow sounding rattle on gravel roads. Turned out to be the bolt that mounts the rear shock to the suspension arm was a little loose. Tightened it up and the noises stopped. And just to add. I had the same kind of noise on the front passesnger side as well. Turns out the rubber bushings on that side for the radius rod where it connects to the body were put in backwards. Flipped them over and that noise went away. -
Sounds cool. Yeah I know we won't be able to do some trails out at TSF. During the week they close parts off for logging. Cedar Tree (or at least parts of it) I know is closed on weekdays. As far as time /place to meet. The parking area to the left just inside the gravel pit with the big concrete blocks at the entrance to Browns sounds good. As far as time. I'm proly up for whatever. We'll have to see what Scott's plans are as well. (ie how early does hee want to be rollin') And for Scott. I'm sure you've looked into all of it. But here's a good link for Sand Lake info straight from the USFS's mouth so to speak. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/recreation/tripplanning/sandlake/index.shtml And it looks like if you want to camp on the dunes. Two new rules just went into effect Aug 1st. No driving on the dunes between midnight and 6am. And you MUST have a portable toilet and use it. I looked for clarification on if it's only your RV/camper has to have one, or if you as a camper have to have one. But the link is down for more info. I want to camp out in the trees in the middle of the sand. that would rock. Only catch is the bathrooms are back in the parkinglot near the "real" campground. They say vehicles can move on the sand during curfew to get in and out of camp though. So I may just take the chance. Or with no ATVs buzzing around a late walk would not be so bad if nature calls.

An exact duplicate of what mine did. Bad DOJ / DOJ's. (I blew both on the same trip. )

when are you hitting the road for wcss 10
TeamCF replied to subaruguru's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
wed/thurs. But I'll be wheeling my way there. -
All I know is I love wheeling my Soob. The look on a guy's face that just had a heck of a time getting up a section trail with a fully locked rig on 36's is priceless when you pick a good line and clear it your first try in a Soob. And he was not a novice, just made a bad choice at the bottom and got overconfident. Sometimes I wish for solid axles and creeper gears. But then I find another trail that's fun and forget about it. The Soobs are a good learning rig. Forces you to really plan out your line down a trail, and learn fast. So when you move on, you'll be that much better. And so far have been lucky to not experiance the hatred between the owners of different rigs. The group I've been wheeling with lately runs Jeeps, Toys, Fords, just about all of it. And most runs always have new peeps in the group. No attitude from any of them. And they all love the Subaru. Understanding when I opt to just meet them at the other end of the trail and take the road. And getting all kinds of excited when I follow them up a "No way!" kind of trail. Just have fun with what ya got. Improve it where you can. When you outgrow it, move on. But always just have fun with it. Simple. And just to be a smartass. My Soob is a toy! (Only pavement it see's is whats between me and the trails. Got a new little econobox for daily driving.)

It totaled less than 48 hrs. Was almost dark when I left thurs.

Wheeling in Michigan
TeamCF replied to Mechanical_misfit's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I grew up down in Livonia. If I ever can get my Soob back there for a visit, I think we need to do some wheelin'. -
Just logged into my RallyCross/off-road profile for the first time in about three months. Added ya.
-
Yeah I noticed that after the second pic. I think we need the full specs on this badboy.
-
There's a Suzuki X90 that runs around TSF on some big meats with a 4 link setup. Crazy lookin' little thing. I'll have to take some pics of it next time I see it out there. Guy did a really good job on it.
-
Nice to see they remembered to put the Subaru emblem back on the front. Even if the only Subaru parts left on it are the body and interior.
-
Hmmm..Not sure how late I'll be out. May want to make my way up to Astoria if I'm gonna end up getting to go. I'm big on the night wheeling though. Heck I've waited till midnight before to leave the house for some wheeling. Might be crazy, but it's fun. And if I break... it's an excuse to get some camping in. And I've always wanted to hit up TSF in the dark......

Sounds good. So if I show up thursday morning at Sand Lake I'll proly se ya there then. I was gonna show wednesday and camp on the dunes. But cutting a day off of the dunes will help make staying for the whole thing easier.
-
OK. I pushing for the whole thing, all of it. If $$ holds out I'll stay all weekend. But I'll at least be at Sand Lake if nothing else. So. We need to start the plan. Times, places, CB channels. Whatever is needed. Sounds like for Scott and whoever is coming down with him, and me. It's Sand Lake wed & thurs, TSF friday. ScoobyClimbs, and Mike. Sounds like you guys were planning on making it out to TSF friday? Gonna have to plan a time and place to meet up for that one. I count 9 days (including today) till I'm runnin' dunes. And those will fly by fast so the plannin' needs to start to make sure we all hook up. Cellphones are not reliable in most of those areas so last minute calls for "Where you at? What CB channel are you on?" may not work. I'm just kickin' the collective butt into gear here. Not really wanting to be the "planner/trailboss" on this one. Just want to go enjoy the ride. (I started this one seperate from Scott's so we could get a fresh take on just what's going on)

Ah.... I remember getting parts wholesale when I worked for a shop. Those were the days. But yeah, I'm not complaining about the price, just was wondering. New axles for $80 and like you say comes with the nuts and pins. Score. -
Yeah I did mine the ghetto way and just bolted them to the roof. They vibrate slightly on really rough terrain. But so far have held up great. And no leaks, alot of clear marine silicone was used. The lights 'just had to go on' and I hadn't found a roof rack for a decent price yet so the drill (and the headliner) came out. Since I gutted the interior for hauling gear. I 'm not even gonna put a rack on it at this point. Keep the CG low.
