Just Some Teaser Pics of My Coupe

Oh yes, let's make my wagon infamous. Gee thanks. So much for "guys having to stick together." Actually, the picture doesn't make it looks nearly as uncomfortable as it really was. -
I contemplated warning her that "backwoodsboy posted about something happening to Bucky," but figured the flights are hard enough on her as it is. :-p That and I'd die too.

Any one have any pictures of lowered EA82's?

That is rather good, but I prefer this one. -

Oh come on guys, did you really have to repost that horrid picture of me five times in a row? Fshnidiot, you have a great looking XT. There really isn't much damage to it. Great to meet you, by the way! -
Without a TCU everything would be at 0 volts and 0% duty cycle, so that would probably be the best initial default. Eh? I’ll probably throw a potentiometer and 555 timer circuit to control duty C for full diff control. You’re right about controlling shift and moving up from there. That’ll probably be the best course of action. Maybe someday I’ll mess with engine control. For now I’ll stick with the transmission because I think it would be cool to have paddle shifters and give people somewhere to start from if they want to do it too. Thanks. I acutally probably don't really need anything too special. I was just terribly spoiled in school with top notch Agilent power supply, function generator, digital multimeter and dual input oscilloscope with logic analyzer built in. Looking at the computer oscilloscopes... Some can be painfully expensive.

I read through everything in the thread. In fact, read everything in about 5 different threads, and the endwrench site. There aren't really any insights into when, how fast, reasoning for the different things. I'd just take my best guesses and then check them if I just knew what each thing actually does, but I don't know. The best descriptions I can find are simple things. I can't really duplicate programming for "open, smooth and lock-up" of the lock-up clutch if I don't know what the duty cycles and purposes are for the three settings. Actually lock-up and overrunning I have a bit of a grasp on. The line pressure is what I have no idea about. As for reliability, I don't care. I hate the 4EAT in my XT anyway. It's a terrible transmission. I plan on putting in a 5 speed manual eventually. I have a Bachelors in Electronics Engineering and just want a fun project to work on for now since my job is not in the field. I kind of figured SS 3 might be a 100% kind of thing to just gimp by. I'm hoping to find out when Subaru does or doesn't engage it to give more normal operation, but maybe not. Meh Where have you seen the controllers? I'd like to read up on them and see if they can explain why. Like mentioned just above, this is the part I really don't understand. I believe it was Nipper that said leaving the torque converter unlocked would kill mileage, and I tend to agree. My thoughts for DS B were to keep it locked until you shifted or took your foot completely off the gas. No idea if that good idea or not though. And where did you get an oscilloscope like that for $75!? Those things are worth multiple thousands.

Move along. Nothing to see here.
-
So, it seems nobody really knows anything about how the 4EAT works. I'm game for making my own custom TCU, but I first need to know the "what for and when" behind the overrunning clutch, line pressure and lock-up that are controlled by SS 3, DS A and DS B (if you don't know what SS and DS are, you probably don't know what I'm asking about anyway ). Otherwise it will run wastefully and shift painfully. I've got partial answers from the '88 XT FSM I've got, but not enough. If anybody knows anything about the transmission or knows of a good USB based oscilloscope for the Mac that has a good trigger and record feature, it'd be awesome to pick your brain. I'm not holding my breath though.

YOWZER!! So THATS what the flappy compartment is for!

Look at this picture. Right in front of the rear tire is the door they're talking about. Can't really see on that picture, but it says "4WD" on it, in white. I don't think the Gen 1 Brats had it. Somebody probably has a better picture for you. -
Well, I like the idea, if just for the interesting factor of it. I could see myself really enjoying a RWD Subaru. Especially if it were MR, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that. Going from Subaru AWD to MR would be a step in the wrong direction for the rally world. The AWD Impreza would basically have to be a whole new car. The two things that are a bit uneasy with me are: When I clicked the second link (nipper posted) and saw the picture, I saw a bit of the latest Celica. Not keen on that. I want a whole new car. Toyota with the Subaru boxer? First Saab and now Toyota owners get the engine without the badge. :-p Anyway, I'm glad to see this done with Toyota. They are two great companies with plenty of successful experience.

Is that what that was? Couldn't make that out.
-
That's a nice setup, but I'd be sure to suck in water. I've had my EA81 cut out and an alternator die thanks to a puddle.
-
No, it's an EJ18 that has a carb mounted right above, and dedicated to, each head. I only mentioned that it was an EJ in a VW to note that it wasn't an EA in a Subaru, like was originally being talked about.
-
Here's an interesting setup I ran across a while ago. It's an EJ in a VW, but the same idea could be applied to an EA. Dual Weber on EJ18.
-
So that's the fabled air box, eh? We have the engine, but not the box. I'd imagine finding one is like looking for hen's teeth. :-\
-
My dad's got a dual Hitachi carb. /end shameless bragging ...sitting around collecting dust.
-
I think a more precise answer would be that it's always in AWD. The diff. lock is what puts it in 4WD.
-
-
No, then we got stuck in stop and go traffic and I checked to make sure my second fan was running.

Another story... One time a friend and I were driving down I-5 in my '81 wagon when a group of girls in some sedan were honking, waving and holding their cell phones up at us. Subarus are truly magical.
