Gary, you could very well be correct. When I was looking for a ej22 the boneyard guy asked several times if it was AT or MT. When I asked him why he told me what I stated in my post that legecys MT EJ22s were non egr. The underhood sticker however is the bottom line which is why I mentioned it. If the sticker reads CA emissions and the vac routing shows non egr I'm pretty sure that is what they'll go by on a visual. Of course if there's a CEL all bets are off.

ej22's installed in legacy's equipped with MT up to 1997 did not have egrs. If I read your thread correctly it's a 95 w/ a MT and the wring harness does not have a connector for a egr? If there is no CEL for a egr then you should be OK. It is very confusing especially when the CA emissions is thrown in. The under hood sticker for the vac routing will show whether or not a egr was originally installed on the car. That is what they'll go by. Check the sticker it'll also indicate if CA emissions.

My .2, soobs are the easist cars I've ever worked on. I've been DYI since age 16 I'm 54 now I've worked on hundreds of different cars hands down soobs have it. Expensive? Seems to me at least more parts are dealer only and some parts need to be original equpiment or the car doesn't run right so that part is probably true. However the bang for your buck is better with a soob.

If you have a MM connect it to the battery with the car running @ idle you should see 13.5 - 14.5 DCvolts. That will tell you that the alt is working. As to what burned the link to begin with is a job for a shop. If the battery was bad enough it could have had an internal short that would have fried the link to save the alt.

The wife took the car in for inspection today at a local Subaru dealer. It didn't pass because the rear brakes need to be changed. They also told her it needs plugs, oil, trans, diff fluid. These guys are getting desprate for business. I didn't check the rear brakes but I did check all the fluids at the used car lot and changed the oil and filter when I got it home. When I called them and told them I do my own work you got almost hear the guys heart sink. I didn't have the heart to ask him why he's checking fluids as part of an inspection. I thought it was telling though that the only fluid that they didn't mention was BRAKE FLUID! The used car dealer is going to do the brakes tomorrow. I'm not doing anything myself that should have been done by dealer before the sale.

The pulley in the 1st pic looks to me to be the ac pulley which has nothing to do with the water pump. The T-belt drives the waterpump which is under the t-belt cover and not seen in that pic at least by me. Does the overflow tank have bubbles in it when the motor is running? Bubbles are big trouble and indicate a bad HG. You say the HG's were changed, were the heads machined? If not that could be a problem especally if the motor overheated. What year is the motor?

Nipper, here's a few possible causes for p420. Number 2, 3, 5 and 6 has possiblites. 1.Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for 2.An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly 3.The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly 4.Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe 5.Retarded spark timing 6.The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings

Nipper, was wondering how you made out with this? The CEL I mentioned in my reply is a P0141 the heater circuit in the #2 sensor is bad. I'm going to look at the sensor tomorrow PM see if there's actual damage. The CEL has come back 2x's now after clearing it so I'll be ordering one regadless what it looks like. Unless it's unplugged!

The ej22 I put into my OBW this past fall now has 210k on it, 9K I've put on myself. Burns maybe a qt in 5k miles. I've got another one with 150k waiting for a car that needs it. The one in the wife's former car has a ej22 with 170K doesn't burn oil but does rap some and I've got one in a 96 imp with 160K that runs so quiet you almost can't hear it. Just for comparison I've got a 96 ej25 with 60K HG blown piece of junk motors:mad:
