  1. Okay, so going by this chart, the first timing belt change should have been at ~130k miles (which it was), so the next one isn't until 260k miles? Is that right? :-\ I'm at 190k miles right now and don't want to screw things up for the quarter million mark! (love this car)
  2. Trico replacement blades or whatever the store has. Ya' just gotta replace them every 6 months instead of letting them go. I just put a new set on for winter.

    Snow Fun

Here's mine: Hope you like it, I had fun making it. My first attempt at a movie is here, a lot more rock and roll, but I think the first one is better overall.
  4. I've had mine about a year I guess, it's spent most of it's time in the glove box because I didn't have it set up right and it would always shut down after 15 seconds and the refresh rate was so slow. This morning I read this: [LINK] Attn Subaru owners: trouble with your ScanGauge? Here's the fix I just got my ScanGauge II a few days ago. Nice unit, and I even read the first few pages of the manual before plugging it in. But after a little while with it I wasn't very satisfied with its performance. It would blank out periodically and sometimes wouldn't work at all after I starting the car. Worst of all, although it did show MPG and other useful stats, it only updated about every 30 seconds -- better feedback than waiting until the next fill maybe, but not exactly the real time feedback I was hoping for. As it turns out, buried in the back of the SGII manual is a short instruction saying that if you have problems with the display not updating properly, you should select MORE -> MORE -> MODE -> PIDS and change the setting from ALL to SUPPORTED. Interestingly, it specifically mentions 1995-1999 Subarus as requiring this setting, and this is the only mention of a specific vehicle in the entire manual. I guess Subaru's first try at SGII must use a slightly nonstandard communication protocol or something. Anyway, I entered that setting last night and it now works flawlessly, with updates every second or two, and the display is on whenever the engine is on. Took some baseline runs with it last night, and I'm pretty sure I can use the information from this thing to get my MPG up over 30. Hope the mods don't mind this thread -- I thought this information might be helpful for any other 95-99 Subaru owners who might be lurking, since it is buried in the back in the ScanGuage manual, is not very obvious, and is absolutely essential to getting the SGII to work in your car. __________________ Well, now I'm in love with it ! 5. Add me to the list. 98 OBW, 150k miles. Clutch pedal would move at most 1" off the floor and until it warmed up, I had to start off in 2nd, then go to 4th. Reverse could only be accessed with the engine off. :-\ After replacing the slave cylinder, the clutch works right at the top like it should. It took me a while to bleed the air out, but I did it myself with a hand vacuum pump to assist me. The only problem I have now is what to do with all the time I have now that I'm not trying to pull the clutch pedal up with the side of my foot.
  6. There haven't been many people that I've really looked up to in admiration, but Colin Mcrae was definitely my hero. I've only watched him on TV, but I could see that not only was he immensely talented, but a good sportsman, and motivator to many. I'm going to have to dig out my tapes and DVDs this week as well as my old PS1 Collin Mcrae Rally, just to hear his voice encourage me during the driving school! You will never be forgotten Colin. (and I'm hoping for an all day Colin Mcrae marathon on Speed TV! )
  7. I get an intermittant CEL on my '98 OBW. I've checked a number of times and there is never any code in the history. No problems noticed with the exception of some small bubbles in the coolant overflow reservoir. Oh oh. :-\ John Milwaukee
  8. Such a waste. My daily driver looks just like that ... 240k miles, I love that car! But the important part of the video is that they never put their beer down or spill a drop. :-\ Biff
  9. I cleaned the headlights on my '92 Legacy with COMET CLEANSER today. I used a clean, wet rag and enough COMET to make a thin paste. Worked it in for 2 minutes, then wiped it off. There was still a slight haze (COMET does that), so I spit on them and wiped the haze off. It worked great! A definite improvement, and they actually look white on the road. ... or maybe it was the spit?? :-\ John Wilke Milwaukee
  10. 146k miles on my '98 Outback. The clutch pedal goes almost to the floor before it kicks in, but it doesn't slip and I've put 3k on it like that. Living life on the edge. John Wilke Milwaukee
  11. I bought it from the guy, above, on eBay. Received it in a few days. Finally got around to hooking it up on my '98 OBW. After brushing a foot of snow off the car so I could get in, I started it up and the check engine light stayed on. I hooked up the Scangauge according to the manual, and it showed "No Codes". I checked the stored codes - "None found". :-\ Okay, so I look at the dash ... the check engine light was off! Well, actually cool! I didn't have to clear it or anything. I finished digging the car out and drove it around the neighborhood a little (not much salt on the roads right now, so I went for it). This is a cool little tool, seems to work well. It keeps shutting off after 10 seconds, I wonder if there is a way to stop that, so it just keeps reading? You can change the backlight color - I've got mine set on blue, and it will fit nicely just under the stock stereo (need to route the cable nicely). So far, I like it. Money well spent. 12. I appreciate the input, looks like a winner. I'm in no hurry at the moment since my '92 is running strong for the winter, but come springtime, that '98 is hitting the road. jw
  13. My problem child is a '98 OBW (150k miles). I also drive a '92 Legacy Wagon (239k miles) in the winter and my prior car was a '87 XT (RIP). A lot of technology happened between '87 and '98. :-\ My light came on while at idle in the Walmart Parking lot. I would like to have my own OBD-2 reader if they aren't that expensive. Is there a reader for the Outback that's recommended over others, for what ever reason? How about the "Equus 3110" ? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B0007VXZ7W Thanks for the input! jw
  14. That was my first thought. There was a nice thread on polishing those lamps for a 200% improvement, pehaps a search would prove beneficial. jw
  15. Used to drive an '87 XT Turbo ... Loved it so much it's just parked in the drive way with multiple issues ... can't get myself to get rid of it. jw
  16. 1992 Legacy 2.2L MPFI non-turbo, purchased 2 years ago for $1,000 with 207k miles on the odo. Now has 226,000 miles (364,500km ! ) on it. Did nothing to it when I got it except new tires and some body work. Since we get three free tests here in Wisconsin, I took it in without doing anything and it failed the CO (18g/mi - limit was 15g/mi). This morning I changed the air filter, plugs, wires, oil and filter ..... passed with 5g/mi. :-p The beast lives on (if I can keep the body from falling off). JW - Milwaukee AKA Biffbradford (oh, yeah ... I better change those timing belts, who knows when they were changed - if ever ! )
