  1. The oil filter I'm using is quite big, same size as the large Subaru white oil filter that came out of the car.
  2. No oil leak on the engine, and the dipstick is the engine oil dipstick. It's a 91 Loyale Wagon 4WD, EFI EA82.
  3. OK, I changed my oil two nights ago, and after adding the required 4.2 quarts of oil the dipstick was way high. I ran the engine for 15 minutes to get the oil through all the cavities and hydro lifters and such, but after that the oil level was still high. I know Subaru engines are notorious for doing that, my Forester for example shows a high oil level after I fill it up, but after warming up the level is down to normal. Will my EA82 engine oil level go down to normal? If not, how can I know if I didn't overfill it?
  4. My Forester was originally named "Blueberry" (lame!) because it is blue, but now it is called Arctic Warrior. The Loyale I call "Beater with a Heater", my wife, who's Korean, calls it the "Haraboji", which is Korean for grandfather. In Korea no one drives cars more than 7 years old, so a 17 year old car with 138,000 miles (over 300k km) is very old for her
  5. I did that the day I bought the Loyale. I hae both my Subarus with cardboard in front of the radiator. The Forester warms up really quick with the cardboard and stays there, the Loyale takes forever to warm up, and I think it is because of the clutch fan. I'll be removing the fan tonight.
  6. You could wire it to a thermo switch, you can buy those are most auto stores.
  7. I found another thread about installing an EA81 fan... I saw an EA81 Loyale wagon parts car for sale for $150 nearby... might get it, if the missus won't mind having a non drivable car in the driveway...!! What KIA is that fan off of? And can you send me that pic?
  8. Just make sure you don't connect the thermo switch wires there!
  9. Here's the deal: it's damn cold here in Fairbanks, we haven't seen temps above freezing since early October, and it's constantly dropping below 0, January and February get to -40 and lower here. Overheating is not an issue here! When I cold start my 91 Loyale the engine driven fan is throwing air all over the place even though the clutch is working fine. My engine takes a looooong time to warm up, and I think the fan is the culprit. The thermostat is working fine too (did the boiling water method). I am seriously considering just removing the fan from the water pump. Should I encounter any issues running the engine without the fan there? Later on, when temps raise up above freezing I will need the fan back on. Instead of the clutch fan can I upgrade it to a second electric fan? Anyone done this before and has a write up somewhere? A kit to buy perhaps?
  10. How much is shipping of a front bumper for a EA82 to AK, zip 99712?
  11. Volvo is another brand I always admired like Subaru, because they were always different, gotta love those huge shoe box wagons!
  12. Sounds funky... different body parts? it may have been replaced after a crash maybe?
  13. Thanks guys. I'm looking to fix some rust on the Beater with a Heater and give her the old satin black look. I'll be doing it indoors as it's freeking cold outside (winter in Alaska...) and my garage is heated. I'll probably have to buy some cheap drop cloths or something for the floor and tool benches, but I was looking for a ballpark number of cans. 10 is a decent number. A cheap air gun might do well too, like markjw, it would be a good excuse to get that air compressor I've been flirting with... xmas is just around the corner...!
  14. Anyone has an idea of how many cans of each, primer, paint (2 or 3 coats) and clear coat should be needed for a decent rattle can paint job on a Loyale Wagon?
  15. I guess this qualifies as off road... my Arctic Warrior, no suspension mods yet, just full winterization, Blizzak tires on steel wheels, Hella 500FF lights, cheapie functional foglights, winter survival kit, extra gas and full size spare. I want to get a 2" lift for it sometime soon. And here it is exploring the Wasatch mountains near Salt Lake City, two days after leaving the dealership:
  16. Nice Foz, saw it at sf.org too!
  17. No pics of the inside, but here's my Forester loaded with almost 700 lbs of my life possessions for my move from Utah to Alaska. The inside was fully loaded, but the Forester took the major potholes of the ALCAN with no problems! That was before I bought the Loyale, which, by the way, right now is loaded with firewood in the garage, I'll snap a picture tomorrow before I unload it and post it here.
  18. Thanks for all the replies and for the help. Grossgary and Turbone, I can't believe I was so dumb as to not think of removing a nut from the other tail light to go match it at a hardware store. Thanks for bringing my brain back to earth!! mdjdc, I'm sending you a PM. I'm starting to really like this forum, nice comminity here!
  19. My name is Ren and I am the owner of a 1991 Loyale Wagon 4WD and a 2008 Forester Sports 2.5X. What can I say, I like my all wheel drive wagons. I am an active member at http://www.subaruforester.org (rpiereck there too), and just heard of Ultimate Subaru recently. My Loyale is what I call a beater with a heater. It isn't the prettiest of Loyales, with its share of rust and a fender bender on the rear left, and a reconstructed title, but I only paid $800 for it. Mechanically it's a sound little mover, with 138,000 miles and going strong. The previous owner had the local Subaru dealership (Auto Service Company) do a compression test about 5,000 miles ago and the numbers were good. I am a helicopter mechanic by trade and doing my own maintenance is my thing, so I like to get dirty fixing my Loyale. Currently it needs new CV joints on the front right. One of my main uses for the Loyale is to go fetch fire wood, I load up the whole interior from the passenger seat to the rear gate and roof rack too, and this little beast still makes it up a snowy uphill road. A true Alaskan beast of burden! There are two things I need help with: 1 - My rear right tail light is in good shape, with a decent gasket, but one of the nuts that holds it in place is missing, so the light protudes an inch out of the body. I was wondering what is the size of that nut so I can just go to a hardware store and buy one. 2 - The rubber molding around the driver's side window has a 3" gash that lets in wind (not good when it is -30F like the other day), and I need to replace it. The local Subaru dealer wants an arm, a leg and my left nad for it ($95), so I am here asking what is a good place to buy one for a decent price, OR does anyone here have one they could part with for a decent sum of money. Here's a pic of my two Subie wagons: The Forester loaded up for an Alaskan winter road trip The Loyale (the right headlight was broken in this pic, it's fixed now) My babies together I'm getting some more wood on Saturday, I'll try to remember to get a pic of the Loyale all loaded up!
