Added another subaru to the stable
KNOPPER replied to KNOPPER's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Got her home in one piece. Car runs and rides great. only curious thing i found when i got home was somebody cut a 1" by 2" hole at the top of the bell housing right in front of the starter. It wasn't fresh, been done for a while. Still haven't figured out for what though. HEY PAUL, I GOT HER FOR $900!! I JUST THREW IT OUT THERE TO SEE WHAT HE WOULD SAY OR COME BACK AT AND HE TOOK IT! I SHOULD HAVE SAID $700! BY THE WAY, DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THOSE WINDSHIELD GASKETS LEFT? THIS ONE IS PRETTY GOOD, BUT IT SEEPS AT THE DRIVERS CORNER.... AND YOU'LL BE THE FIRST ONE I TELL IF I EVER DECIDE TO PART WITH HER.....(sorry about the caps lock) -
1979 subaru wagon dl automatic. Cleanest old subaru i have ever seen. Has 114000 oringinal miles, original paint, original interior. This car is in better shape than the 79 i first bought 22 years ago. When i first saw the ad, i wasn't thrilled with an automatic, but thought if i could get it cheap enough, i could put a 4 wheel drive running gear under it and have a 4x4 wagon. When i went to see it, i can't imagine doing anything to it except keep it all original. Only rust is at the bottom of the rear quarters. The floor pans are awesome, doors have only tiny little spots on the seams, not even raised yet. Oh, and one surface rust under rear window. So small i could fix them and spot them in with the original lacquer. I'm stoked. Runs good, but may need some lower end work. Not sure if it's wrist pin noise or piston slop. Good power though. Gave him a deposit and going to pick it up tomorrow. (darn atms wont give enough money)

I know, I got excited when i saw strut mount too......but it's for the stabilizer rod that comes off the lower control arm.....

out west here in the mountains.....franklin:grin: -
How about the tires? A shifted belt in a tire can make a car pull like the brake on that side was stuck!

Look at what i found....

1981 BRAT part compatibility question
KNOPPER replied to MaddCelt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
77 -81 body parts are the same.....as far as engine tranny combo goes, 81 is a year on it's own. -
no cupholders... what the heck!?!
KNOPPER replied to xbeerd's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I thought about modding the ashtray area on the dash of my gen 1 brat.....you could fit a cup between it and the windshield.......... -
I THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY THE GUY MENTIONED THAT A DENT WAS FIXED....HOW ABOUT THE GAPING HOLES AT THE BOTTOM!!! I GUESS OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND....

I have been reading this thread with great interest the past few days. I have an 81 brat that the previous owner installed a weber on. The way he did the pcv hoses has been driving me nuts and this thread has been great for showing me how to fix them. The question i have is with the ecu emissions stuff. Can the solenoids and thermoswitch on the intake be junked? How about the vacuum switches and canister? Gd mentioned something above about the canister but i wanted to clarify before i start ripping stuff of the car. Thanks

KNOPPER replied to bratgrl's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
will that wire reach your a/c drier?... looks like a switch from the top of the drier that has been snapped off........ -
my first question would be where did you find the struts and mounts? are you sure they are correct? there are people on this forum who have been looking for years for them....

1981 brat inner tie rod ends
KNOPPER replied to KNOPPER's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
just for grins i called the dealer expecting him to laugh and hang up, but he said he would have them in tomorrow..............go figure..... -
I'M REBUILDING THE COMPLETE FRONT END IN MY BRAT (EXCEPT FOR THE STRUTS AND STRUT MOUNTS.......GROUP BUY ANYONE?) AND I'VE RAN INTO A LITTLE SNAG. I ORDERED ALL THE PARTS FROM ROCKAUTO..BEARINGS, SEALS, CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS, CALIPERS, BRAKE LINES, TRAVERSE ARM BUSHINGS, SWAY BAR BUSHINGS, STEERING RACK BELLOWS, TIE ROD ENDS. MY FIRST PROBLEM WAS WITH THE BELLOWS. THE ONES LISTED FOR IT HAVE A LITTLE OPENING AT THE BOTTOM WHERE I GUESS A TUBE CONNECTS TO BOTH SIDES. WELL IT COMES TO FIND OUT MINE HAS A NEWER STYLE WITH A BIG FUNNELL TYPE END ON IT LIKE THE 82'S. NO PROB, ORDERED THE CORRECT ONES. BUT THE INNER TIE ROD ENDS THAT ROCK AUTO AND EVERY BODY ELSE SHOWS FOR IT ARE 11 3/4 IN LONG. THE ONES I HAVE ARE 10 1/2 LONG, AND THE NEWER ONE'S FOR THE 82 ARE 9 3/4. I CAN'T FIND ANY THAT ARE THE RIGHT LENGTH.(10 1/2) I'M COMMITED TO CHANGING THEM TOO BECAUSE SOMEHOW MY SON PUT ONE IN THE TRASH PILE AND IT'S GONE! I'M HOPING SOMEONE ELSE HAS COME ACROSS THIS AND FOUND A SOLUTION. THANKS

Gen 1 Brat sound system.

Yes, i would be interested in what you came up with. I'm getting ready to do the same in my '81. Also curious what you were thinking for front speakers. I'm debating between 6 inch 3 ways in the doors, or get component speakers and put the mids in the doors and the tweets on the pillars... -

THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS, BUT MAYBE I DIDN'T EXPLAIN WELL ENOUGH THAT I ALREADY BOUGHT IT, LAST SATURDAY. I GAVE 1500 FOR IT WHICH I THOUGHT WAS A PRETTY GOOD DEAL COMPARED TO SOME OF THE OTHERS I'VE SEEN SELLING LATELY. THE FACT THAT IT WASN'T 2000 MIKES AWAY WAS A BIG PLUS TOO. IT RUNS LIKE A CHAMP, CAME WITH A WEBER ALREADY ON IT. ODOMOTER SAYS 105,000 WHICH I WOULD BELIEVE SINCE IT'S GOT THE TACH/ 6 DIGIT ODO ON IT. IT'S DEFINITELY BEEN REPAINTED, CHEAP A** MAACO JOB. IT'S THE SOFTEST PAINT I'VE EVER SEEN. WHEN I BROUGHT IT HOME IT WAS SO OXIDIZED IT LOOKED GREY INSTEAD OF BLACK. I SPENT A COUPLE OF DAYS BUFFING AND POLISHING...I THINK IT CLEANED UP PRETTY WELL. AS FAR AS THE INTERIOR GOES ITS THE NORM.....CRAKED DASH, DOOR LOCK TRIM IS TOTALLY GONE, CAN SEE THE ROAD IN A FEW SPOTS THROUGH THE FLOOR, SEAT COVERS COVERING UP WHAT'S LEFT OF THE SEAT CUSHIONS. THE BED'S IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE INSIDE, JUST STARTING TO BUBBLE AT TNE BACK BED SEAM. TRUST ME, THE USUAL RUST IS THERE, THE WHEEL WELLS, ROCKER PANELS, ETC. IT'S AMAZING HOW A GOOD POLISHING CAN HIDE ALL THAT IN PICS... I'LL POST PICS OF THE HITCH NEXT WEEK. JUST LEFT FOR A WEEK AND I MISS THE CAR ALREADY... THANKS AGAIN FOR COMMENTING ON MY LATEST MID-LIFE CRISIS...... -
1981 SUBARU BRAT GL... AND ON THE EAST COAST BELIEVE IT OR NOT IN COLUMBIA SOUTH CAROLINA. I'M SO EXCITED I CAN HARDLY STAND IT! I'VE BEEN PATIENTLY WAITING FOR A LONG TIME TO FIND SOMETHING DECENT CLOSE BY. IT WAS REAL HARD SEEING ALL THOSE CARS OUT IN THE WEST. I ALMOST THOUGHT ABOUT BUYING ONE AND HAVING IT SHIPPED SIGHT UNSEEN....THIS BRAT LOOKS GREAT IN THE PICTURES, BUT IT HAS THE USUAL RUST AND OTHER VARIOUS NORMAL PROBLEMS. I'M GOING TO HAVE FUN WITH IT THIS SUMMER AND THEN TEAR INTO IT IN THE FALL/WINTER. SHOULD GIVE ME PLENTY OF TIME TO LOCATE THE VARIOUS PARTS I NEED. WELL, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK....
-
Hey nollie. Glad to hear there's somebody else close by who loves these old subarus. I'm over in franklin . I just bought an '81 brat that i have big plans for next winter. Mechanically it's great and the body looks great from a distance, but it's just starting to get the normal rust problems. I'm going to have fun with it this summer, the kids love the jump seats. Then this winter i plan to tear it apart and totally go through it. I'm going to post some pics when i get finished cleaning it up. This will be my second gen 1subaru i've totally gone through and i love these cars...might be able to catch up with you sometime..... Danny

THIS MAY BE A NEWBIE REPEATED QUESTION, BUT CAN YOU PUT A NEWER EA 82 5 SPEED H/L IN AN 81 BRAT W/ AN 1800 WITH OUT TOO MUCH MODIFICATION?
