High temp low pressure. WTF?
wentz912 replied to wentz912's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the help guys. Now, I remember hearing something about there being "aftermarket" thermostats that don't work correctly/fail prematurely in comparison to the factory Sub units? Am I intarded or am I remembering correctly? Cuz I think I'm going to at least try the thermostat bit because my oil pressure seems to be doing better now for some reason.... -
The vehicle in question is a 1986 GL Wagon, EA82, 5 speed w/ dual range, and 190k on the ticker. So my car has been running kinda warm lately, like the needle on the gauge goes from the cold to touching the bottom edge of the red as soon as it warms up and then stays there. The only Idea i've got is maybe a sticking thermostat? I thought that it was maybe the lights I had installed on the front of the car blocking air flow to the radiator but I'm negating that since they're really not THAT big of lights. And the other thing is my oil pressure has gone all weird too. The gauge reads fine until the car warms up, then the temp gauge jumps up as described above, and the oil pressure gauge drops. Anybody got any ideas wtf is wrong with my car?

Thanks guys. Now I know what to look for at the local JY! And as far as the conversion goes, is it really as simple as pulling the manual parts and re-installing the power assisted components? GLoyale: Where are you located? I'm reasonably sure that my manual rack is pretty much toast. It feels REALLY weird and jerky after doing any sort of off roading....but hey, it's yours for the price of shipping unless you're close enough for pick up. And I have a question on lights. I'm having difficulties deciding between the Hella 500FF and the 700FF. Theyre both pretty reasonably priced kits as far as I can tell and the only difference is that the 700s are a larger diameter light. And, I can afford the extra $10 to get the 700s over the 500s, but is it worth the amount of airflow into the radiator that they'll block? According to Hella's website they are "13% larger than the 500FF" Or am I worrying over nothing?

Okay, got two questions here. First: What parts do I need to scavenge off what years/trim levels to convert my 86 GL 4x4 carb'd EA82 wagon w/ AC and manual steering, to having power steering? All I can think of is the pump, rack/pinion and assoc. parts, and a new belt or two. Second: Where is the easiest place to go through the firewall with wiring for a pair/trio of lights? I've tried on either side of the center console with zero luck, too much stuff crammed into those little areas and with how thick the firewall is there due to unibody and whatnot...

where did you find these tires? I can't anything in that size online. I had to buy a set of four lightly used/old ones at a resale place here in town. I don't know if you've got a snow/winter tread but that's the only thing I'd like to drive on...

I haven't actually gotten to speak with the owner yet. He wasn't home when I walked over there with my dad to speak with him. I have a question on the RX bit though. I could see through the back window, where the carpet was pulled back, what looked like a strut tower formed into the unibody? looking in the wheel well it looks to have the same coil overs as my 86 wagon. Is this normal?
-
Who said Kelso is where the car is? I live in Kelso, I'm not telling you where my dad lives.
-
Hmmm...is the C-10 2wd or 4wd? Actually the deal I'm working to get is to have my dad buy it, get it running/taken care of or whatever, and then trade my dad my wagon.
-
Soooo I spotted a white RX in the yard across the street from mi padres house. Just from talking to my dad, the neighbor has told him that the turbo is toast. THe car looks pretty clean inside and out, what's it worth? And anything I should look for in particular with the RX over the other models of that generation?
-
I've come up with a better solution! I'll buy the RX that I recently discovered hiding in the neighbors yard! That will take care of my rally fixation and my desire to do an EJ22 swap and something to stuff legacy suspension under. And THEN I can lift and wheel the piss out of my wagon!
-
I can't decided what to do. Should I lift my 86 GL and wheel the piss out of it? Or should I lower just a touch and put some nice tires, etc on it and rally the piss out of it? I've got a LOT of logging/fire roads aroundabouts here so both options are doable... what do you guyys think?

MORE PICTURES!!!!!!! please?

so the 94-99 outback seats are good stuff. and apparently so are the 03's what about other years eh?
-
My apologies, the question I was actually trying to ask is what the VDC bit means. I pondered it for a bit before posting the question, but I'm still stumped.
-
Do what now?
-
S**t. I was afraid you would say someting like that. How can I check?
-
Thanks for the help guys! I guess I'll do some bouncing around town after class tomorrow and see if I can find some tools to beg borrow or buy. And since I'm on the topic of suspension and such. The camber is off enough that my "new" snow tires are starting to wear funny. My front left has a weird positive camber even though it's set at the same height as the pass side. And that tire's outside shoulder is noticeabley rounded (by sight and feel) in comparison to the opposite side of the tire as well as the other three tires on the car...I measured from the ground to the center of the fender across the hub on both sides and they are within 1/4" of each other. What, besides the adjustment nuts on the front struts, will affect front end camber?

From what I understand, to adjust the rear coil-overs on my 86 GL, I need to compress the spring, and then rotate the body of the coil over until it sits on one of the taller notches correct? Now, I've got a super nifty spanner wrench for turning it to a taller notch, but, I haven't got a spring compressor lying aorund. What tools have you guys made do with and had reasonable success? I was thinking maybe a pair of large c-clamps?:-\

The switch in the column? Or where?

So, the headlights on my 86 GL Wagon have serious issues. When I've got the headlights turned on, the high beam indicators in the dash stay lit and as far as I can tell, both the high beams and the low beams seem to be lit at the same time. When I put slight rearward pressure on the switch, or turn on my turn signal, the hi-beam indicators turn off and I'm left with regular low beams. If I push it forward past the click, I'm left with just the hi-beams usual pattern. (This is all compared to my brothers 85 of course.) So far I haven't had any problems with people flashing their lights at me for blinding them, and I actually appreciate the combined patterns of light since I have a night blindness issue and the standard low beams are pretty pathetic. But my question is, how can I fix this so that if/when I decide to wire a set of driving/offroad lights into the high beam circuit, I wont have everything on at once when I'm just doing normal driving? I haven't got any idea where to start... Thanks for the help and let me know if I need to clarify anything.

I spy a nw-wheelers.com sticker, whose does it be??
-
They were definitely cloth, but the part I'm not sure aobut it whether or not the car is even an out back. I'll have to start scrounging the local junkyards...
-
Does the trim level or body style change the seats in the outbacks at all? My step mom has a 99 outback (at least I think it's an outback) and her seats aren't all that particularly great from what I remember of the handful of times I've driven it...
-
Ah, that's what I was afraid of. I really like the seats that my old 84 Toyota pickup had in it. Well, before the truck got stolen any how. Oh well, I guess I'll see about scrounging up a pair of seats and see what I can make work. Thanks all.
-
So does anybody know what other make/model seats will drop into my 86 GL wagon? The left side of my drivers seat is absolutely toast and I figured I might as well see if I can upgrade while I'm at it. Besides, the lumbar support in the stock GL seats is HORRIBLE! Thanks for the help guys!
