Official 6-Lug Re-drill Thread: Now in the USRM!

Not sure how popular they are in your area, but the Nissan armada wheels look really nice and they are a 17" six lug alloy with a lot of backspace. -

For an example, MY pugs are 14x6 alloys, with a 4.5" backspace. Most 15" factory six lugs aren't going to be any narrower than 7". So to get the same look as my pugs as far as the tire/fender relationship, I would have to find a 15x7 wheel with 5.5" of backspace. -

If want your tires with six lug wheels to stick out from the body the same that the ones on your pugs do, the easiest way is to find wheels that are the same width and backspace. Same width with less back space equals more stick out. Same width more backspace nets you less stickout. same backspace more width, more stick out. same backspace, less width, less stick out. then you get to start playing with your tire widths and how they interact with wheel width. -
Looks like I have a bad headgasket...

you would think huh. I don't know about your area, but my local machine shop simply charges per head, no matter what size they are. As far as it being the HG's, this is not necessarily true. Your cooling system "could" be sucking air somewhere that it is cavitated. What kind of bubbles are we talking here? A steady stream or it just burps ocassionally? -

A good thought to remember though, when the backspace is the same between two wheels, if the new wheel is wider, all that extra width goes on the outside IE out past the fender line. -

You've got it. From the surface that touches the wheel hub to the inside lip of the wheel. -
So since I've had my GL wagon back together, i've been getting rather dreary fuel mileage out of the old girl approximately 17-18 cruising at 65-75. Before i took it apart i was getting 25-28 no problem. The only things i can think of that i've "changed" are the tires and perhaps my timing isn't exactly perfect. When i was calculating my mileage before, it was with 185/80-13s on stock wagons and i was NOT correcting the odometer readings, the car is now wearing 205/60-14s on pug 14*6 alloys. My math says the 14s are about 3/4 inch shorter than the tires i had before, but theyre still taller than stock, and a side by side comparison between my 13s and 14s has them at close enough to the same height that i couldn't really tell. So how did i drop ten miles per gallon? i still need to get a timing light and use it on the old girl, because I'm sure it's a touch off, since she feels more sluggish than she used to coming off the line. What is the proper advance from BTDC while idling at 650-800rpm?

Any one have any pictures of lowered EA82's?
wentz912 replied to flyjum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So how does one lower an EA82 without totally phucking the rear alignment up? Mine is on the second from tallest notch on the rear coilovers and I am STILL wearing the inside shoulder first... -

MOST chevy wheels you find from 2wd's will be 5 lug, not the appropriate 6 anyhow. Only a small amount of the newer, smaller 2wds use the right 6x5.5 you need for the swap. Other 6x5.5 rigs are Nissan, Mitsubishi, Dodge Mighty Max/D50, 4wd Chevy's (careful with this one) early steels often don't have enough backspace/too much offset, and later alloys dont have large enough center holes, recent model 4x4 Fords...i'm sure i'm forgetting some. What size is the center hole on the back of these wheels? Reconsidering the six lug option for my car now that i have access to a lathe. -
Don't be afraid to call me spencer, i'm not gonna work this week and we got LOTS of daylight to play with this time of year. Lets build a SUBIE!!

Your local parts place is a good start. -
Found it! couldn't find it at first, my bumper was tweaked up on that side, kaking it impossible to see the screw.

2 questions... 86 GL

Hose looks like the vacuum feed for the HVAC canister there on the firewall, top left of your photo. -
So I finally got around to replacing my broken headlights assembly the other day, and all went well with that. One problem though, the new right is aimed about a foot low from where I'd like it to be, and thats at ten feet! I looked around for an adjustment screw, but could only find the one behind the grill for the horizontal adjustment, but I just can't find the vertical!

Just got done doing the headgaskets on my wagon, also dropped mine , I just stuffed them back in since I didn't have the slightest idea which one belonged where. Seems to run fine minus my enormous exhaust leak.

Drove mine a bunch today! So glad to have her back! Also threw the 13"s back on while I wait for the tires for my pugs to get here. Also made one little tweak, wasn't sure if it would work at first, but it was an old trick I learned on my Toyota. The leads for the turn signal and the corner marker/parking lights use the same plug. I switched which one plugged in where so now I have nice amber fog lights in the bumper and my turn signals can be seen from somewhere other than straight in front of me.

So I ginally got a chance to tear into the car today. went from a complete enginge to a short block in approximately 4.5 hours. cant tell by eyeball where the head gasket failed, but I definitely had milkshake spewing out the vents. machinist is open again on Monday and will be dropping my heads off to hime first thing jn the morning.

Fair point rob, however, the relationship i have with my parts guy is such that I actually get to look at my.gaskets before buying them. So I get to look for stamps and feel the quality in my hand before I throw downa penny for them.

Understood. Definitely need to get me a chilton/haynes manual. Is the "right stuff" brand sealed/liquid basket a good choice? It's worked great on my Toyota and I made sure to buy the stufff tailored towards import cars. My parts list so far: -Felpro permatorque hgs -Felpro or dealer intake and exhaust gaskets along with cam tower o rings and valve cover baskets.(obk25xt is local to me and says has had zero problems with the felpro while using a LIGHT coat of silicone.) -oil pump reseal kit what did I miss?
-
Thanks for getting me motivated to work in mine again man! Had to fight off the toyota bug there for a little bit. Back in the subie game!

Thanks for the information guys. I think im going to just leave the engine in the car and get er done. seeing as i dont have a hoist to do the engine swap with or anywhere to put a second engine to work on. I do however, have the advantage of being able to just close the hood on the car and leave it be over night while im working on it though. Few more questions though. what sort of grease or whatever should I use to re-attach the rocker arms? any specific brand or such to get? and the oil pump reseal, what all does that entail?
