fuel pump diagnosis doublecheck
'84 Flat-Four replied to ferox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
your FPCU should be mounted with the bracket that holds your hood-release cable/handle. It's a black box, and I'm not so sure you can open them up to troubleshoot it (not 100% on this) When mine went, I got lucky at the JY and haven't had any issues since. Incidentally, mine "went" because of a windshield leak. The water corroded all the connections, fried my ECM, and my FPCU. With the new one (new to me) I mounted it with a ziplock bag overtop of it, until I fixed the leak. -

1984 GL Hatchback HELP!
'84 Flat-Four replied to Attractor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yank it! there's no need for it anymore. You can pick up a box of vacuum caps at the local auto shop and cap all the vacuum lines (don't touch brake vac, of course); run the vac line from the weber to the disty advance port; I suggest keeping the egr and hook it up to the port on the weber; some members have used the Hitachi's forked fuel inlet thingy (same thread as webers) and have kept the fuel return line going; I kept my weber inlet thingy and do not have a fuel return line, your choice I suppose... the quarter trick does wonders for the ASV, btw. -
My gas tank... it is a bomb
'84 Flat-Four replied to Speedwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wow:eek: I'm glad to hear it didn't turn into a much worse situation... ie. gas in the eyes, or worse yet, an explosion. I just took a look at my '83 FSM and it shows Brats ('83s at least) also have a fuel vapor seperator on the passenger's side rear area by the tank. Other Brat members will be able to give you better advice... But my guess would be an issue with the tank's air breather hose or tube, vapor seperator or vapor seperator hose. Clogged, kinked, bent, gunked-up...? -

1984 GL Hatchback HELP!
'84 Flat-Four replied to Attractor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
good news,... I was happy to see that you ordered the kit... Doing the swap is sooo easy,... plenty of write-ups and such to reference. You will find that the throttle cable offset and cable bracket will cause you a bit of turmoil, but that's the extent of the troubles.... once you get it set up right, you'll be amazed at how easy it was... good luck and keep us posted... -

ok, so I switched to carb ported vac advance for the disty. (versus mani vac as it was). Very slight, but indeed a noticeable difference in high rpms and speed. No difference in the idle or low rpms, but when I need more balls (ie. passing) there is a bit more than before - not a world of a difference but definitely a difference! Thanks all!

1984 GL Hatchback HELP!
'84 Flat-Four replied to Attractor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
believe me, i understand how you feel! But it's like golf... you hit a hundred bad shots, hate the game, but you hit that one single good swing and it keeps you coming back. Don't give up! It'll be a shame to sell it if it's a simple dead secondary diaphragm that's shot. My guess (and I stress guess) is that the diaphragm for the secondary is shot on both carbs. From what I understand, it is common enough (especially in 20+ year old Soobs) to be seen in two carbs back to back. Rebuild kits don't address the diaphram at all. Post some pics of your carb like Durania said and I'm sure members will have more input to provide than me. Plus pics attract members to posts... DON'T GIVE UP, STAY COOL  -

1984 GL Hatchback HELP!
'84 Flat-Four replied to Attractor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes that is the drawback to the mod, but the lesser of two evils. Try playing w/ idle mixture & idle speed screws. Idle mixture screw is on front, lower screw, maybe a roll pin in front needs to be removed beforehand, but sometimes already removed. Good luck & keep us updated on ur progress. -
1984 GL Hatchback HELP!
'84 Flat-Four replied to Attractor1's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would manually actuate the plate, maybe even PB blast it (with the carb off of course) to free it up... maybe that'll do the trick... you can always do the mod to keep 2nd barrel open, bypassing diaphram (which sounds like it's shot)... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49976 Btw, my carb was already setup with this mod when i got it. It passed emissions with it! But eventually I had to weberize due to a few other major problems with the Hicrappy carb. I suggest you weberize it... it's soooooooo sweet! -
good catch... long week, tired, & ready for cold ones & bbq... I meant to ask, should I hook up the disty to the weber carb? edit: Found this thread... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15423 long one to read, but well worth it... sorry I didn't find it before posting my question...

instaed of hijacking opus' thread (lost 5mpg), I wanted to pose this question to the group... Is there any advantages or disadvantages to hooking up the disty's vac advance to the carb versus to the intake manifold. I recently installed a weber 32/36 dgev, and left the vac adv hooked up to the intake mani. I have zero problems with it this way and I am a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But curiosity leads me to pose this question... Should I hook it up to the intake mani instead? anything gained or lost? thanks

I agree completely... but also want to add that I have found the clips missing from the sets in the auto parts stores. Hold onto the ones you got and just re-use them (I know this now... )

That's funny... scroll down the list and you'll find Amway listed above Conklin Company, Inc. Hmmmm... http://www.mlmwatchdog.com/li_directory_mlm_companies.html Btw, in case you didn't already know, MLM means Multi-Level Marketing. Sometimes referred to as Network Marketing. I am not knocking it. There are reputable MLM companies out there such as Tupperware, Avon, World Financial Group, HerbaLife and many more... I am under the impression that Conklin Co., Inc. may be one of the good ones too. I am only reinforcing what rtcaravan has manged to do all on his own... prove his ignorance. And sir, (to: rtcaravan), if you are indeed not an Independant Business Owner (IBO) for Conklin, but are contemplating becoming one, I suggest you refer to the DSA Code of Ethics before doing so... under A.1. of the Direct Selling Association Code of Ethics (of which Conklin is a member): " Member companies shall ensure that no statements, promises or testimonials are made which are likely to mislead consumers or prospective salespeople. ...These sections cover communications about your own company or another company. For example, a distributor for company A makes misleading statements about company B and/or its products to consumers or prospective salespeople." (pssst... also illegal and can land you a hefty fine...) Oh, and btw, I am a Newbie around here,... and most likely the target audience for Conklin pushers like yourself... guess what, I will never even consider your suggestions, recommendations, or anything else you have to say regarding any Conklin product out there... or anything else really. And if you are a salesman, IBO, or whatever,... I feel bad for YOU buddy... you have alot to learn. To everyone else, cause I'm done with this thread... if you're interested in knowing the difference between pyramid schemes and MLM's click this link... (canadian perspective, but same legal relevance in the U.S.) http://sbinfocanada.about.com/cs/marketing/a/MLMpyramid.htm inform yourselves

PO hooked it up... Now whether it was Brown_Muscle or goobaroo, not sure... but it has been wired correctly, so no complaints here... I kind of like them that way... if you check them out up close, they are a bit lighter in amber that the "real" amber color. If I had to guess, I would say some sort of orange dye ?
