I think that click you here is the solenoid plunger on the starter hitting the contacts. Problem is your contacts are probly worn or broken right off. These little chunks of copper are easy to replace and relatively cheap at 16$cdn 12somethin americanos. The starter is really easy to remove and work on. I'm not much of a gambler but my money's on the contacts. click click click click

89 GL10 Turbo acceleration hesistation w/ turbo
Vanislru replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I suggested disconecting it [the cts] strictly for the purpose of ruling it out and putting the car into limp mode. If the car runs better in limp mode then you will know it's sensor related. This doesn't mean that it is the cts, it could be any of the sensors the computer 'ignores' while in limp mode. These things do cause alot of problems all on thier own though. I ran the previous car for 9000km or 5500mi. without the cts. connected. It runs rich and makes the plugs a little ugly, at the time it was better than jerkin all over the mf'n road. Harmfull, uh maybe to air quality but to the engine? It's been my experience that these motors can run a long time in limp mode with no real issues. I replaced the cts with a new oem sensor and the car definately has less hesitation, I also pulled the disty out and cleaned with brake cleaner and then lubed it. Now the vac advance mechanism moves nice and easy. No noticeable hesitation. Sensor should be about 27 cdn from subaru guys. Good luck. -
Sometimes the oil return on the underside of the turbo will spit oil all over the up pipe and smoke like hell. The last car i bought for a friend billowed out smokey exhaust and when we pulled the turbo off the oil return line had swollen and distorted so bad that the oil couldn't return to the pan and was leaking through the turbo and all around the bottom. Replaced line for $8, no problems. HE GOT THIS CAR FOR CHEAP, the guy thought either the rings or the turbo were shot.

Well sort of, they are km's so that's about 200k miles. All I've done is clean the rings and heads. Several turbo's got replaced from driving in northern Alberta when it's -40 degrees celsius seems you have to be carefull warming and cooling the car at those temps.

Well If you like to ski I drive the 400km round trip from the comox valley to Mt.Cain every weekend starting December. The road to the base of the hill is a typical winding coastal 2 lanes and the road up the mountain is one way Up Fri night, Up in the Am down Pm all other times. This road is a rallying dream. Depending what time you go on Fri you may be breakin trail through a few feet of fresh, or if the graders been through and it's a clear night u can wind the gears out in 4 lo and live the dream. Multiple switchbacks, doglegs and straights, 10' plus snow banks and no traffic. Mt. Cain has awesome terrain, backcountry. Think big f'n old growth cedar trees and alpine bowls, Georgia straight one side the Pacific on the other. There's tons of free accomadtion for friends and the attitude is way laid back. Open invatation. Seriously. I'm up for Mainland trips but only if theres the possibiltiy of getting turns in. Ferries are expensive. -
The previous owners hatchet job wiring is the only beef i have with my car. They took out connectors and did the old wire twist with low quality tape thing. This coil what kind is it? What kind of difference are you expecting other than not haveing the accell's limitations? I want to trash my accell.

Questions on 88 2WD Wagon
Vanislru replied to VanIsl.johnny's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Are you in a hurry to purchase? Why stick with a 2wd? 4wd's are cheap and plentiful, maybe for the money you might want a 4wd turbo? If you have time there are some great cars to be had, My wagon before the one in my sig cost 50$, + the cost of two headgaskets. It met an ugly end when i hit a logging truck head on out by Bamfield on the west coast. I just finished helping my friend turn a turbo with blown trannie into a turbo with 5spd d/r for $500. Nice wagon too, only 210k very clean no rust. Anywhere. I've kept an eye on the buy and sell and the deals semm to be out there right now. Guess everyone wants shiny new things. Turbo d/r 5spd = -
89 GL10 Turbo acceleration hesistation w/ turbo
Vanislru replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I checked for vaccum leaks and found none. The problem was more noticeable with the manual trannie i think because their is no torque converter to absorb the inconsistancies in the torque curve. Jazzician did you try to unplug the coolant sensor connector? If you take off the turbo intake piece you can gain easier access then it's just a matter of removing the little wire holding clip that keeps the connector in place. Check it out you'll know if it;'s a sensor prob. I had this problem when it was an atuo too. -
I've done several manual tranie swaps into ea82t's. It's a bit of work cause u have too swap the pedal assembly, clutch assembly, drive shaft, diff, and cv's too. if u can get a dr 5spd cheap go for it. I've got a 3spd auto with 110 000km[90,000mi] on it for sale.

89 GL10 Turbo acceleration hesistation w/ turbo
Vanislru replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Exhaust flow issue? I doubt it but why not do the swap just to rule it out. This problem has pissed me off more days than i care to remember I've had three ea82t wagons and all had this problem. disconnect the engine coolant temp sensor connector off of the thermistor that threads into the coolant port on the intake see if that "fixes the problem" . This puts the car into limp mode, less sensors are factored into the air fuel ratio. On the one car this little unit was the problem, something to do with the air fuel ratio being affected from the bad output to the computer. I think you can check the reisistance in place. On my 3rd wagon, the one in the sig., the hesitation was more pronounced when i installed the manual trannie. I still haven't dealt with the issue i just drive around with the coolant temp sensor disconnected. I don't know if that helps. I guess if it runs better in limp mode you'll know that it is sensor related and not exhaust. -
I'm keen, and so are 2 guys in town here 1 has already thrown $$$ on the twe header and dp. Whole lotta subaru's around these parts.

Cracked head or blown gasket?
Vanislru replied to Vanislru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanx i will pull the engine in sunday then, If there are cracks on the heads where are the ones most likely to cause problems? -
The car [ea82t wagon] was driven 15 miles with a hole in the radiator that was unknown. This was at 120kmh or about 65 mph, the car overheated, slowed and then was pulled off the road. It would not start after it had been shut down at first. Dan the owner of the car noticed the over heat condition shortly before pulling over and is unsure how long it had been maxed out. I have just finished installing a d/r 5spd trannie for him and when going for the test run noticed the missfire chuff chuff sound. Lottsa white exhaust not a lot of power. So... I'm going to help him out again, would've been nice to know this w... ork was needed before putting the motor/trannie in:banghead: , is it worth while to try and do a head gasket without pulling the motor? Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

monster ea82 wagon update!
Vanislru replied to bushbasher's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's sweet! So when can I take you up on the wheelin' around the back 40 offer? I'm still sportin the minor lift w 185/80's but the 4" kit is in the ... works . What kind of $'s are you into this project for? You have 2 crawl ratios? If you need any wagon stuff let me know [cheap or free], I'm getting ready to send the parts cars to the wreckers. We are heading to Victoria in the next 2 weeks so i can drop off what you may need. -
1989 Subaru GL10 Turbo - Hesitations
Vanislru replied to jazzician's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Did you check the timing belts, what abot checking the timing for ignition too. Is the vaccum advance working? -
I've had the same prob. and twice it was the accell coil. Now I don't know if there's more too it, like the coils packin it in from something else but i'm on my third, and it will miss, but it's rare now and nothin like before. My feelin's are that accells are cheap and aren't really worth the headaches. When the warranties up and it dies i'm changing the whole ignition setup

It fit with room to spare. The intercooler came frome an Audi with a inline 5. Thought it said 9000s on it when i got it from the graveyard, but from your posts i'm thinkin the info's wrong. Anyways has anyone got much to say about the vertical mount. I'm thinkin that might be the route to go with the 2nd turbo wagon, easier to plumb than the current setup i have. I'll be using a 2nd audi intercooler. the intercooler said 9000s but the c...ar i robbed the recirc valve from WAS an audi or VW, whatever. So... yeah it's not a s...aab. I should post before going into the shop not after when things aren't so clear in ma head. Maybe i'll cahnge the sig. I tried to post pics but only got as far as attachments can't figure out how to make a link for them. Carfreak thanks for those links

Looking at Techworks engineering's beater car i noticed the intercooler sits vertically, has any one else installed one this way? There design had some tin around the chiller with what looked like a modified wrx scoop up top.

crack in turbo housing
Vanislru replied to slidewaysuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My daily driver [86 dl ea82t] has a seriously cracked housing, I'm looking to move up to a larger turbo but i've got 30,000km on it since i noticed the cracks and i'm really not all that concerned. I don't think you need to rush out and throw down cash immediately, but take a good look at the end play on the shaft. Make sure there's no rubbing cause if it's rubbin on the exhaust side it probly will on the intake side too. And that's no good. I drove the wagon in my sig. with a cracked turbo for 3 seasons with no probs. Maybe there might be some exhaust leaking out the crack by the wastegate valve but not enough to effect boost i would think. I could ship a turbo for cheap to Oregon I would think, I'll take a look while I'm at the graveyard. -
ea82t owners - post your mileage
Vanislru replied to 88rxsedan's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
376,000 km so about 230,000 miles and about 18-25 mpg depending on my driving mood. I pulled off the heads and cleaned the ...rings about 20,000 km ago cause they weren't in such good shape didn't replace though. 50,000 km's of that is very hard mountain/offroad drivin with some go fast mods to the engine. -

'86 RX Turbo Motor Oil Boiling
Vanislru replied to leej323's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My 2 bits it's your coolant, maybe u have a head gasket issue allowing exhaust into your coolant. A good shop will have an inexpensive test to verify this. If it is exhaust gas in your coolant the ph will be off and your coolant levels won't really change, just become more acidic over time. My turbo did this everytime i'd pull into the parking lot on the ski hill or after driving hard for some time, replaced head gaskets and no problems since.
