  1. Borla is the only place making a header for the singleport EJ22. There are alot more companies making headers for the dualport, as they're all the same dimensionally. The OBX is a copy of an equal length header put out by another tuner at a fraction of the cost. The Borla is long known to improve the sound only, until they crack....and they all do....at which point they sound like $h1t. I would go with the OBX personally, even though it means losing the boxer rumble. Jay
  2. The rears are quite a bit longer than the fronts....you'd have to make up that extra length out back somehow. I dunno if the front axles would be long enough through the full extension. In other words, try it and post pics! Jay
  3. I'd go with a box full of axles, 3 transmissions in the bed of a truck and a flatbed trailer. I'm sure I could make my expenses back 3 times over! Jay
  4. This is pretty interesting. I'm curious if the sharp edges left from the grooving would lead to detonation problems. I didn't read the article, just looked at the pictures :brow:like the nudie books:brow:.....Does angle, width or open area make a difference in combustion? I wonder if there is a point where compression ratio drops enough to negate the gain in combustion efficiency? I had a set of heads that were built by a pretty successful Canadian performance shop and they had 4-5 small grooves running across the floor of the intake ports as the made the dip into the valve faces. Supposedly it's an old motorcycle tuning trick, but I have never seen the grooving done in the chamber itself. Jay Storm
  5. Pre 96 should be interchangable. Others will know with more authority, I'm going off of the change from dual exhaust port to singleport after 96. Jay Storm
  6. You'd almost be obligated to park up in the mulch next to the swingsets and lawntractors.... Jay
  7. Nope....it's gonna die. You should send it to me right away.....:-p Jay Storm
  8. Seeing these tires surely has me thinking of getting the little impreza dirty again! Couple ideas though..... Anyone run tubes inside these? Would it make any difference in the tire handling higher psi? Beadlocks: Why not run a dozen or so sheetmetal screws into the beads per wheel? Seems to work for drag racers....:-\ Jay
  9. I think the point is being missed that the OP had already tried to slow too quickly and lost traction......at that point, downsifting will only be worse. Adding throttle will speed the wheels up hopefully to the point of regaining traction so that the driver can reattempt to slow down. Obviously you wanna do this before you're totally sideways....and just along for the ride. I wasn't there.....couldn't say for sure what the OP shoulda done....but the rally advice has at least some merit to it, if the OP got the advice worded correctly to begin with. Jay
  10. 95 should still be OBDI......unless it was built very late in the year and somehow was made with OBDII. 96+ is OBDII for sure. The wiring that came with the motor should still be able to be fitted to your car, no? Jay
  11. I use webshots.com. They resize them for initial viewing but link to the original file seperately. They also include the html code to link the pics in different forums, blogs, emails, etc..... example: Jay
  12. Glad you finally got it figured out. I don't think anyone could've guessed that solution without looking at it first hand. Isn't Subaru wiring FUN??? ~Jay
  13. Crap.....I don't really wanna take it back out again just to switch those springs. I think we'll have to see what happens to the engagement and operation. If it's worse, I'll still have time to do it before it really counts. This is what I get for questioning the minds at Fuji Heavy Industries! Thanks for the heads up on the belleville springs....I won't make this mistake again.
  14. It's after 1pm now......some of us are waiting......:-\ Jay
  15. Keep the 99 manifold and put it on the new motor. I believe the 04's still had the cable TB....TBW wasn't until 05, unless the Forester got it before the Impreza. Jay Storm
  16. For the most bang for the buck, an EJ25 would be my vote. They can be had on the cheap nowadays with kids swapping them out for WRX motors. I'll probably be debated here, but a new set of headgaskets will ensure you don't have that problem for a good long time. The EJ18 ECU will run the EJ22 or EJ25 just fine. Simply use the sensors from the EJ18, along with the engine harness attatched to the intake manifold and plug the sucker in. These things are like Legos.... You may have to transplant the coil and/or throttlebody/IAC depending on what you find and from what year it came from. I've personally taken my 96 Impreza Brighton (EJ18) to a mildly built EJ25 with no problems. 2 yrs later, I have since swapped to an EJ22 purely for the fun of it. For me, it means that my car will fall into a different racing class than an EJ25 powered Impreza and I want to explore the potential of the combo. The EJ25 was a fun little rocket....though the 6k revlimiter came up sadly soon...... PM me if you have any detailed questions that I might be able to help with. Jay Storm
  17. Hmmm good question! I got the parts so long ago....CRS filed them deep away. I don't remember them being extremely expensive, they just took forever and a day to come in. I went ahead and disassembled the chunk, carefully laying out each piece in order and simply went in reverse order with new parts. The springs are 2 beveled washers which were installed both in the same orientation. This seemed a little odd since I use these things on some of my machines at work and always alternate the bevels (bellville type spring washers) so I put them back in big end to big end. I wanted to enhance the holding power of the LSD, but try as I might....I could not fit an extra plate or spring in the pack. Just not enough clearance. I thought briefly about taking a little meat off the portion that meets in the center around the pinion gears, but I don't have a mill at work (good maint. shop, eh?) and didn't wanna risk fubar'ing the whole thing. I might explore that option over the winter and see what happens.....it should ~in theory~ engage the clutches sooner and hold tighter. Jay Storm
  18. Bumping this back from the dead. Since installing the LSD into the Impreza, we've been very happy with the results. We'd still spin a little bit when one rear is off the ground but the forward thrust was still enough to keep us going alot better than with the stock open diff. Our corner speeds have gone way up with this diff but this last race took the last of the life out of it and I have it out to rebuild. Now for my issues... I was able to order the shims, springs and friction plates thru my dealer but have since lost the darn exploded view of the diff... I tried searching for that same illustration but haven't been able to find it yet. If anyone has one they could kindly post or email me...that would be super! Thanks in advance! Jay Storm
  19. Ideally...you would want to remove the diff cover and then tap some pipe threads into the port so you can add a barbed fitting to it. Trying to waterproof it for offroading? Jay Storm
  20. I just went and rechecked myself. The RS brackets will mount to your L hubs, making this an easy afternoon job. I must've been locked into thinking about trying to put the RS caliper on my hubs using the L brackets (and stock smaller size rotors for the L). You shouldn't have any worries. Jay Storm
  21. You absolutely CAN run the 15" wheels with RS brakes.... If you went with WRX brakes...you'd have to let the 15's go bye bye. Both upgrades are very much worth the cost. In your case, you might have to update the hub carriers as the calper brackets appear to have changed mounting points after 96.
  22. I used the hand tool at first, then put the small suction cup onto a dremel arbor for a sanding drum and chucked that into my drill. Saved me a bunch of time. Jay
  23. Is it an AWD car? If just FWD, you may have issues with the rear struts as they have a different angle of installation and are a good bit longer than AWD units. What struts are being used with the H&R springs? You may wanna put the WRX springs (or forester springs) with the other struts if they are of decent quality and adjustable. If they are old stockers....ditch em for the WRX setup and your old tophats and call it a day. Don't forget the alignment after it's all said and done. You can eyeball it pretty close to get by a day or 3....but get it done as soon as practical. Jay
