The brand is Kelsey-Hayes. I dunno, maybe ea81 calipers are a bit different and they boxed the wrong one... I'm just glad I can drive it for now.- What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
I swore a lot at rock auto today.... I ordered two new front brake calipers/brackets for my GL. The right one fit on no problem. The left one... There's more distance between the mounting holes on the bracket. Also on the caliper, couldn't put it on the old bracket. WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?! They have the same part number, except for the last digit to denote R/L. Fortunately the right side was frozen up good and solid, so I can drive it. The left one is OK, but getting crusty. I just needed that car mobile again. On monday I'll have to call 'em up to see what's going on.- phase1/phase2 timing belt swap.
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXOh you can bolt on the old tensioner bracket? I was wondering about that. I may go that route. Not putting phase1 heads on, because this is a phase2 car. I just want it to work. Heh.- What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
I bought this thing for $900 It needs a clutch, oil pan, and head gaskets. I have all the clutch stuff except tob clips, and an oilpan. It should be a fairly easy job and get me a nice car.- phase1/phase2 timing belt swap.
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXDamn, thanks for the info. I'll add that to my list. I assume all the idlers can be used though, right? Cam and crank seals the same?- phase1/phase2 timing belt swap.
Can I use a phase1 2.2 timing belt kit for a phase2 sohc 2.5?- North Idaho GL
Do you have the input splines far enough in the transmission? Ie. did you put the carrier bearing 1" too far back?- My '92 Loyale: Safariwagon
You're missing the hose clamps on the low pressure return hose to the tank... I'd put those back on before you lose all your ps fluid.- Something broke under car - need help identifying
987687 replied to DavieGravy's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXThat's a weird way for it to fail, and it looks like it already has been dragging on the ground. Yea, it won't cause tire wear, it'll just cause it to handle like crap. I'd buy a new endlink online, they're under $20 on rock auto.- Anyone want to get a FREE VIN check?
It seems like the VIN check companies are figuring this loophole out and starting to block it. It's getting really hard to find a site that allows free vin checks.- EJ22 Rebuild ?
987687 replied to fixitguy50's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXIf the crank sprocket is the same, you don't have to swap it. There are two different crank sprockets. Some of them only have a hand full of reluctor lobes, some have a whole bunch. If the crank sprocket on the new engine is the same as on your old one, you don't have to swap it.- EJ22 Rebuild ?
987687 replied to fixitguy50's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXNope, they're all single port. Also, phase 2 intake manifolds are all the same, 2.2 and 2.5. You can swap them. Unlike on phase1 engines where 2.2 and 2.5 intakes are different. I don't think either phase1 intake will bolt to a phase2... I'm gonna have to check next time I'm at the junk yard, because now I'm confused.- EJ22 Rebuild ?
987687 replied to fixitguy50's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYes, but they're easy to come by, and lots of aftermarket support.- Broken belt, piston damage?
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX2.2 or 2.5 phase 1 manifold? I've never heard this before..- Broken belt, piston damage?
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXYou can't bolt a phase1 intake to a phase2 head... Anyway, the car sold out from under me. Though, armed with this info, I'm not worried to pick up a different car with a broken belt.- Broken belt, piston damage?
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXAgain, that doesn't work well with phase2 land. You can't bolt a phase2 intake manifold to phase1 heads.- Broken belt, piston damage?
987687 replied to 987687's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXEh, not with a phase2. 2.2 heads don't flow as well, an they're only single port. I'd be much better off having my 2.5 heads decked if I wanted to go that route. Thanks GD, that's what I though, but I wanted to ask just to be sure.- Broken belt, piston damage?
I'm thinking about getting a car with a phase2 2.5 that has a broken timing belt. When that happens, does it usually eat the pistons? Or can I slap on my set of spare 2.5 sohc heads and call it a day?- Show off your roos Mileage!
Make sure to get a picture in 308 miles!- Legacy - smoked front rotor
987687 replied to BrokenSubaru's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX^^ I'd agree with that theory, especially if it's a gt/outback with the dual piston brakes. The slide pins on those always seize up in the rustbelt.- My '83 GL: The Ski Wagon
Yea, I was surprised how not loud the ea81 is without a header. I took a rip in an ej25 franken motor once without the header. THAT was loud.- The One Behind the Wheel! (Pics of Us!)

hold my beer and watch this.... The last party I had with those friends we used thermite to melt a seized ej22 that came out of my car. Although we went a little overkill, we used FIFTEEN POUNDS of thermite on the engine block.... The explosion was so hot that 40' away we had to turn around and run. Then after we could look again, there was a river of molten ej22 running down off the block.- The One Behind the Wheel! (Pics of Us!)
