It seems a little weird to have redundent electric sytems on a car. Who needs to increase their odds that something will fail? But then again how many times have I finished up my shopping and thanked Subaru engineers that the headlights CAN'T be left on. Almost feel like I don't need jumper cables with my Subaru. Actually, I've only used them to help others.

The parking light toggle switch on the steering column went bad and I had no running lights. Drove me nuts looking through the whole system before I isolated the problem to that switch. Took it apart and the little spring was causing a short. Cleaned it all up and put it back together and all's good. I assume the intended function of the switch is to put the parking lights on without the ignition being on. Is that all?

Returned from my roadtrip earlier this week. In the middle of it a horrible clanking noise was coming from the engine under no load. Going up I-15 I was suprised to hear this when I stopped for gas in Idaho Falls. Hall's Automotive Subaru specialists said it was probably the flexplate between the engine and transmission. Which was good since a different source said my engine was gone and I was feeling ill thinking about how to tow the wagon back to Seattle. ($700 for a Uhaul van and car trailer.) Checked into a motel and car was fixed by noon the next day. Got back into Seattle 11 hours later. Anyway, attached a photo of the damage. Shows middle section completely cracked off.

Went to the dealer to pick up some parts today. Afterwards I strolled the lot looking at the new models. Of course a saleman started pointing out all the benefits of buying a new car. I was sincere about not being in the market. Since it was slow he suggested we take a WRX out for a spin. I wish I hadn't. Even though I only put 5 miles on it up the street and back, all I can say is: Wow!! Then he showed me the STi. (Sadly no test drive.) If I said I wasn't a little bummed driving my Legacy home I'd be lying.

Just finished a 2500 mile trip in '90 Legacy AWD Auto. My averages for each gas up are as follows: 30.26 30.17 28.65 29.19 31.2 35.15 26.35 28.2 Overall average if I throw out the hi and low comes to 29.61. This is mostly interstate driving at speeds ranging from 75-85. I'm quite happy since I expected 25-26 mpg at those high speeds. I just wonder where the 35.15 came from. I checked the numbers and all look good. I must have had one heck of a tail wind. -cl

According to the Novus guy, the DIY-kits don't generate enough PSI to force the glue deep into the crack. He said he first drills out the ding, uses a hydraulic piston to generate adequate pressure to push the glue in deep, and cures the glue with UV light. Most shops will offer lifetime guarantee for repairs. He was going to charge me $60 to fix 4 dings. I haven't decided if it's worth it. -cl

I found them at the local parts store (a few years back). Don't know if they're available online. One of my boots is showing wear so I'm just planning ahead. Split boots sounds like the correct name. A quick search turned up this website http://www.raxles.com/spitboot.htm They don't recommend them. Looks like I'll just wait to replace the axle when the time comes. -cl

The gasket on the bottom of the passenger side cover is wet. I'm keeping an eye on it but it appears to leak a bit. Is there enough room in the engine compartment to remove the cover and replace the gasket? Is there a benefit from replacing both sides, other than they are probably sold as a set? -cl

Brakes squeak for the first second when they are applied. (Speed doesn't make a difference.) Thenthey are silent. The pads were replaced recently. I assume anti-squeak juice wasn't applied to the pads when they were done. Is the "one second squeak" typical of not having used the juice? Or is something else worth checking out. -cl
