  1. the stock air cleaner is NOT restrictive I have used Subaru air cleaner housings with new bases on dual carb Datsuns they flow just fine. before tossing rocks at the air cleaner and exhaust perhaps take a look at your intentions. if you are wanting a high performance car the EA series engine will not meet any of your goals. if you want good reliable go just about anywhere fun then an EA series will do. they just wont do it fast.
  2. Just a quick RX update. I have installed a nice oil cooler complete with -10 lines it took some finagling but it's in there. This monster should help the new engine live a bit longer life. This is one advantage to living in NASCAR land I paid $60 for all of it. Photos are below.... Note: I have straightened the bent fins on the radiator and my co-driver will be getting an ear full
  3. getting closer to being ready for the next engine. Intake is modified for Laminar flow in AFM. Tomorrow I'll be picking up the needed gaskets for this to happen.
  4. I'd put the cat at the top of the list of suspects followed by ignition timing
  5. how many miles are on your RX? What do you intend to do with your RX? and finally What kind of budget do you have for repairs/upgrdes. BTW this is my RX it's not as quick as I'd like but it will be soon
  6. Oh yah Sylvan hill in Portland with 2400# pushing a 2100# truck down the hill is a once in a lifetime experience (I'll never do anything so stupid again)
  7. I towed with a 1971 Datsun 1600 pickup my 510 race car on a trailer. the trick is never use brakes to slow down, they wont last. Stick with larger vehicles for towing. I am with GD on this one there is not enough power or brakes on an ea81 to tow much of anything
  8. am preparing to re-install the SVO intercooler on the RX just pipe to pick up and a few fittings to add. final connections will be made once the new engine goes in. I am eagerly awaiting the first drive with a new engine. please don't mind the cell phone pic
  9. if you were really handy you could make the stock filter housing fit.
  10. He has a lot of work ahead to get her up and running.
  11. this is the cleanest engine I have even seen at 149k miles I will be installing this next weekend.
  12. if you have a blown head gasket and the heads aren't cracked why not put new head gaskets in and be done with it. BTW search bridging cracks they are not as bad as you might think.
  13. Just to toss in my $.02. The EJ22 (modern stuff) depending on year has roughly twice the torque your stock EA81 has and close to twice the HP too. your GL weighs less than most of the cars you listed so HP/lb will be much higher than you think. An engine producing 135-142hp in a car weighing around 2000lb will make for a very quick car.
  14. my next race is October 9th it will be a struggle but I think I may just make it. I am still waiting for a couple parts to send off for Scott to work on but I think it will all come together soon. BTW can someone tell me what the two bolts on the bottom of the block on either side of the crank are for? they look like they were intended for banjo fittings and an oil cooler.
  15. I have read the white paper and gone so far as to print it out for reference. The plan at this point is to get the RX running so I can finish out the season. This means a freshened stock phase 1 2.2 will be going in. I will continue to hunt for either a 2.5 block or a phase 2 2.2 to build into a hi comp screamer. This car will race again before the season is over.
  16. mods depend greatly upon what you intend to do with the car. Please expand upon the car and what you want from it...
  17. will stock 2.2 cams work with this engine? I am either building one of these or a frankin 2.2.
  18. I ordered swap stuff for an EJ to bolt up. THE RX WILL RISE AGAIN!!!!!
  19. I think if you want 200+hp you would be better building a Frankinmotor. that is a 2.5 bottom end with your 2.2 heads.
  20. I am getting tempted every time I see a new post in this thread... it would be so easy just pop an EJ25 block between my Phase 1 heads and voila Frankinmotor.
  21. If you loved the 5-speed I would put in another one. What really maters is what you like.
  22. I have an EJ22 it's a little aged but it runs a bit better than the current resident in my RX. I've been reading about the "Frankinmotor" and I have been wondering... is there a way to get good N/A power out of the 2.2 and still have it be a bit rev happy? I have been paying attention and I want to run a few ideas by everyone... Phase 2 block Phase 1 heads Delta power grind cams header CAI I am not sure what the final compression will be. I think if the higher angle of the valves in the Phase 2 heads coupled with the flat top pistons gives 10:1 then the lower angle of the Phase 1 heads will bump it up a little more possibly closer to 10.5 or even 11:1. I have built Datsuns in the past but these Suby motors I get confused as to what fits what. like will the 6 bolt block mate up with a 4 bolt trans and the like.
  23. Autocross is about the driver but often when you reach the "modified" classes you need lots of power to be competitive. The 2.2 will be reliable and have a little more power/torque than the 1.8 turbo I blew up. my concern is the bottom end on mine has lots and lots of miles on it. I may just run it till I can afford to build a stronger engine but I was thinking "make the leap now while it's down anyway" From what I've been reading the Frankinmotor is more like a WRX on power with all the power and torque available all the time. I think I should break away from the frankin motor thread at this point and start a new one.
  24. I wonder if a high comp 2.2 would be powerful enough to propel my RX in a way that would win championships.
  25. I have a 2.2 legacy as a donor and I'm on the hunt for a 2.5 shortblock.
