  1. This may be interesting re 4EAT draining. When I got my new old car a year ago I checked the fluids before purchase-Clean. I still drained the AT and the oil was clean. So I figure everything is still clean because the dipstick is clean oil. I was going to add TransX to it and worked out the ratio. 26 oz from the 32 oz bottle . Then since it may already have been done and draining only removes half of the oil that goes to 13 oz when it's drained. I'll get cut off. Next post is the meat.
  2. The pedal pulse happens rarely but will be investigated. I pulled the ABS solenoid fuse(under dash) then later both the relays in front of the ABS distr. The Hum is still there. I may haved caused wasted braincells. This is a Very quiet engine. Once the lifters settle down you basically just hear the belts spinning and the Humm. So maybe a fuel line is against a brake line somewhere then gets magnified right there. I'll let y'all know. Thx.
  3. Wow. Thanks folks!. I should've asked earlier. Yes it hums as long as the engine is running. I'll let y'all know what i find. Thx again.
  4. I've had my 97 Legacy about a year now and except for some initial work it is fine, Except this certain Humming like a motor running.( another one) The origin of this noise was from either the ABS distributor or maf sensor. Unplugging the MAF kills the engine and noise stops plus there is no moving part. My manual desn't go into the ABS distr AT ALL. This one appears to have like a motor or distributor deal atop. There are no warnings lit up and light works. It is like it is continually reacting to a situation which isn't there. Sometimes at a stop with pedal depressed there is a pulsing so methinks it related. I've searched the archives here and find nothing. Any ideas folks? TIA .
  5. Sorry for the 2nd reply but I'm always timed out. The side load from a breaker is different. I've broken things. Also, You most recently has addressed cleaning the threads of junk so a loosened fastener has somewhere to go without binding. This is valuable. Maybe some won't have the bad habits we saw before which is in early stages.."the stud came out".
  6. Davebugs. I must agree to your incite about breaking loose bolts. I too would like to feel them "snap" loose. The armory many have when one is embedded in a head or operation is to use varying impact upon them if at all possible.
  7. This pickle could require a different attitude. This bolt was threadlocked. Grinding the head off disperses more problems than any Pb Blaster. It needs Impact.
  8. The other thing is she mentioned stuff was crusty which means rusty. Somebody going to magically know a bolt was broken off ? And what she's going to do about it? No doubt capable yet unnecessary to have her hair full of rust and sweat wondering why the hell someone lead her into this. Oh yeh, it's so easy, you just lie here and drill it out this way see, crap falling in your face. Hey no problem. Right.
  9. Well I thought the upgrade of tires and struts was enough until a person gets used to them. I'm no dirt track racer but I tried out my stuff on paved roads in the middle of the night- and was a complete Idiot! That new rear sway bar can turn understeer to oversteer in a second with new wheels and shocks. I say take it slow.
  10. Stuff like this ... Been making noise for years then a new one makes a noise. You already suspected the crank pulley, that may set up a tempo. What about the idler pulley/tightening pulley? It may be flying apart inside. So there is already a beat and the new alternater changed the rythm. It seems like there are 3 things to check before throwing a used unknown alternator into the mix.
  11. Congrats 1st for that is a good package. Check the rear fluid 1st. Mine was a '97 Legacy and while all other levels were topped etc. The rear diff plug was so frozen it was like it had never moved in 10 yrs. So a good refill of that. The other whine is between the two drives and has something to do with the center bearing possibly.
  12. Like more interesting than sanding those wheels? Well it's all good. Those new ones are striking and we would enjoy an update about how they performed. I'm not leaving you hanging there with the last post.
  13. Let me put it another way RxL. I'm becoming old fart status. I would not attempt to remove her from the gene pool or leave her alone. I was kidding with you. I just think she's a great young woman. She is more into this joke than we can be. In defference to the atmosphere surrounding the presentation of four struts in an iron pot- as a bouquet of flowers; Would not that be laced with Roses?
  14. Rx. Yes again.. Okay I'm a little difficult to follow sometimes but I was Speaking to Her basically. It was something she could understand and would float right across your head. You can't have a concept of what I can do unless I give you clues. It is more important now that my betrothed young Bride leave everything and we embark on a fine journey of Love, rebuilding and knowledge. Knowledges of how to tweak you.
  15. If it wer me which it ain't. The struts would be presented in a heavy caldren of a pot . Something which courses through the ages. Each strut would have the finest red rose, long stemmed attached gently to it. The pot wouldn't have any water in it even though it could. That would blow the whole deal. the roses have those little vestibules attached to hold enough water. That would celebrate the dream of many. The idea of a gal who is interested and obviously gifted in these things and retains her sweet. And isn't burnt out crazy.
  16. :)Yeh. However that was a good choice for that Prezi. Those really look good. Nice job.
  17. This freaking ugly claw of a tool is a product of the manic state. I had to consider all sorts of variables and the fact the A/C condensor was left in place. Long-rump roast bar with pins to engage the inner part of the h/b and flat so that the socket and bar for that size will depress against it under torque. So I would lend this to somebody that needs it because it worked very well.
  18. Interesting i suppose it started helping my Dad and he was a stikler. I suppose when he went off to defend I was sorta supposed to remember things. Eventually i became the loner kid with grease under his fingernails(which wasn't cool) I helped and older fellow replace an automatic under a 318 in the middle of the night before school in the morning. this will time out again before going thru decades later. Believe me I been under weird vehicles doing the near impossible with bugs crawling over me and the damn trouble lamp burns freakin out and while working by touch there are other critters which aren't bugs. Gets to where my passion for more unique vehicles drove me avant and then there were special tools to be made so Then there was Machine tools. Inexpensive meaning they all needed work too. In order to build the tools to repair the vehicles. To eventually wreck them or have them stolen. Cool not? learned some stuff.
  19. Your post stands clear by its merit. Many do here. I just happened to be here when it appeared and I figure it can't hurt anything by recognising this.
  20. I think Fairtax Nailed it. He was posting while i was pickin. Definitely good info all around.
  21. Well put. It must be something even more intense to see an engine that has your sweat and blood on it and treated like crap once it left the shop.:-\
  22. Good freakin gravy! 4K and a lifter tap. there are so many ways before condemning any hy lifter. you are 2 changes behind. The second will change things. Believe it . Within 1K.
  23. It wasn't sealing due to actual Sub filters not sealing and then there is a paralell thread about filters becoming smaller. One may question why. There is a link and redesign.
  24. Just look down to Minitransam's post in 2006 about "who makes Subaru filters".
  25. I'm not really The person but have read thru older posts. There were recommendations and you should search that post. There was nothing said Bad about Pure 1 perolator which often goes on sale with oil at Adv A. I've had no leaks with any but am still subie newbie. After I fixed a few things last year I have to Look for things to worry about.
