Um....duh....but even at stock levels and before the EBC was installed, it has done its little 1/4 sec burps. I adjusted the timing and the low end bog dissapeared...but came back.

1987 RX. Mods: TWE Header/DP and stright pipe 2.5" DP back. 'Intake' and an EBC. Otherwise its stock. (well, besides suspension work but that doesnt matter here) Under stock boost, once WOT is applied and the turbo spools to max stock boost, EXACTLY 5 seconds later, either fuel and/or ignition cuts out for about 1/4 of a second. 5 seconds later, if im still in it (like a 5th gear pull or so) it does it again. 95% of the time its on this 5 second counter. Sometimes it wont do it until after 12 seconds...then VERY rarely will it just not do it. But it does, and its annoying. The ECU was throwing the CEL for the TPS...ive fixed that and it works great now. ECU has no more codes. The engine does do a weird bogging sometimes at LOW RPMs...from 1000 to 2500 somtimes...usually fixed by getting out of the gas and back on. Ive replaced the MAF, there is no MAP on this engine from the factory, all emissions is working correctly, has an O2 sensor thats not too old (6 months max) and everything seems to be working. Its also got a known good ignition coil, new cap/rotor/wires/plugs/fuel filter. Any ideas to why its cutting out like that?
-
Ok, TPS fixed. ECU not throwing code for that anymore. its just giving me the 'model designation' flash on the ECU now. BUT ITS STILL CUTTING OUT! Also...it will boost creep to 13 psi or so, and NOT fuel cut. BUT...when i use the EBC to control boost, it will fuel cut.

Where to tee in for a boost gauge?
WJM replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Boost guage needs to be directly linked to the manifold presure. Otherwise you wont have a proper reading. THe lines on the TB are not really manifold presure...ive done this and it gave me strange readings. -
I does create boost...but not much. Not enough to get positive in the manifold before you have to let off or overrev. It will create enough boost under a hard rev to make BOV sounds when you have a BOV installed.

Is it the wierd one with the connector on top as well as on the side?

Straight off the manifold. -
Today im making progress. Got the spring out from the back seat so they are not rolling around and making spring noises, and took the tps out along with breaking all the pcv hoses and plastic parts in it. Time to install the custom breather i have...
-
Ok, so I got unlazy and got the TPS out to test it. WOT switch works, and there is a smooth arc or ohms on the TPS part...looks like its just out of adjustment. I'll re install it now. Also broke every single PCV plastic peice and hose on the system. Time to put my custom breather on now.

Still looks like it up high....but I see that it is lower. looks great!

The wastegate on these VF7's are too small. I get boost creep...and WHAM, fuel cut....and im not even upping the boost on purpose. time for a deadbolt.

See, thats just the thing....my wagon, I never Re-TQ'd on the 9.5:1, and they held fine. Rings and a valve went before anything else. The last one was on NAPA head gasket...so i expected it to go at any time. The RX so far is going great. *knock on wood*

Looking for stock turbo specs...
WJM replied to Tachometer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ummm....no dude! Ive got 2 of them in perfect working order! -
The FSM states, as well as other sources, that you must re TQ the heads on the EA82 (T and NA) after you "warm up the engine, and then let the heads cool down" something about oil, loosening and tighening things in certin orders... I wonder if that is truly nessisary....as us EA82T people keep blowing headgaskets here lately.
-
As usual, I didnt get anything done.
-
yeah....t3h wagon when it blew its rings (and i think melted a piston on its way) after i moved it to its final resting spot....I WOT'ed it with no load on 15 or so PSI. Held that for like 2 mins. It still didnt let go and it stayed at 7k. Temp never went past 180 either. Tuff in some ways but weak in others....unless its built properly.

Dude! Weird! I still have not fully "got into" the really old stuff like that...as Ive never had one. Looks good tho!

HMmmmmm........Still wont affect me getting some from them if/when I need them. Everyone makes mistakes.

Well, its that time of the year again...
WJM replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Where's my X-wing? -
...just happens a little later this year. No job...no $...bills to pay...not selling enough extra stuff that I have to keep going...and the world has seemed to unite against me. That and jobs seem to dry up as soon as I see them. RX pitched a fit this morning...oil smoke out the exhaust. the Wagon is dead. I cannot afford to title, insure, and tag the RX so its legal to drive. The wagon's tag expires in Dec, and its out of inspection by 6 months now. Hopefully a bright light is that the TWE stuff will move smoothly now, as I hope Folgers is thru with trying to screw us and them. Hopefully the rest of the oil cooler adapters will come in.... And...to top it all off, everything i do and say (outside of a few driving moments on autocross courses) is just plain WRONG to everyone else on the planet. Makes me wonder why I still wake up in the moring.... [/4th rant of the day]

That too.

No, it cost me $ to be bored. Arg.

Does anyone tow with a 1.8L FWD wagon?
WJM replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you are going to tow with it...get some beefier rear springs, upgrade the brakes - stainless lines, new rotors, some QUALITY pads F/R, and QUALITY Hi temp fluid.
