So I spent another 30 mins with the SUBARU today...
WJM replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My usual route is Hwy 49 south thru Harrisburg to 485...on to 24/27 to harris to idlewild to the independence intersection where the dealer is. Sometimes I might go down Mount pleasant highway to 601 to 24/27...thats 5 miles shorter and less traffic when Im late...so i can really fly down some ruff and tumble twistys at 100+mph....thats when the middle of the scoop starts floppin a little. -

Id be setting it for 12...ir it will have no power. My DL had NOTHING until it was set for about 20. -
I know ive never had a problem with an EJ25 going thru head gaskets. Those problems are solved by having a 2nd gen block...with these new turbo legacy's have an EJ257...which is a completely different block all together. the USDM STi uses this block. Its got 300 HP/300 TQ...so...id say it good to go. The NA ones have the Phase two block, with SOHC...but ive heard form somewhere there is a 3rd gen block in those NA's tho.... Ofcourse, my dad's Outback with 180,000+ miles on it is all original under hood with its factory original DOHC phase 1 block and heads and headgaskets.

WOnt find those under the hood of any stock Leone chassis....XT ALT, PS and pump bracket, AC, and crank+WP pullys and the tesioner (not pictured). Also a nice thick radiator infront of all that, a mechanical fan in perfect operating condition under there and a manually controlled electrical fan to the left (barely in pic). MRT Rally Camber/Cast plates. They do wonders for the handling. They were originally designed for Impreza/Legacy appications. No modifications required to install these right on the stock strut, and i only needed to remove 2 MM of material from the outside of each bolt hole for them to fit perfectly. I did have to remove the Spare tire mount from the engine bay for the WRX TMIC to fit just right under the hood....although it does sit a little low...but when i get the Spyder intake installed, it will be perfect. Just need some duct work on the scoop to make 100% of the scooped ait flow thru the IC. The underside of the hood of the scoop. The Corbeau seat....im WAY too tall for this seat withthe home made adapter i made for it. 1 inch between the top of my head and the sunroof. BTW: the seat is up for sale. The hanlding of the Carrera dampers since it has more travel now is just plain WONDERFUL. Proper dampening is DA BOMB. no more bouncing and loosing traction! Just gotta do something about the front now.... -
And once again, I'll show you what transpired: Slightly different rear ride height...its just right now. Yesterday, it was just about riding on that 1/3 peice of that WRX bumpstop....now, look at the travel it has. Moved the collar up to the second resting point....and preloaded the spring before installation 1 15/16" from the bottom of the collar. Another shot from the rear. And for those who wanted to see under the hood. MAF adapter, and 3" ID cone filter with the inverted cone on the top (not seen at this angle), the 24.99 Autozone special. WRX TMIC with snazzy PCV 90* elbow and snazzy NAPA stick hose, along with a stock 1987 EA82 turbo inlet hose going from the IC to the TB...a quite perfect fit amazingly. SUBARU sure was thinking ahead back then.

The 712's suck on autcross and track so ive been told...and I like the tread build of the 711 better. Plus, they are low in price. I dont plan on trimming anything...they and the tires WILL fit just fine. the front is actually going to be raised a TEEEENY bit soon.... The body kit will be black until i repaint the car. PURE WHITE....whats black above the midline will be black...whatever is chrome or not black up there will stay chrome or get chromed. If you notice the front air dam...it pointed up some...once i correct that...it will be even sweeter! Oh and thanks for the complement!

15 inch pugs are on the way, and some of these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=ECSTA+711&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=25HR5E711&fromCompare1=yes or these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=VictoRacer+V700&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=25ZR5V700&fromCompare1=yes Or...maybe these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Ecsta+V710&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&partnum=05WR5EV710 i have not decided on putting R compunds on the rims for autox/track stuff...or jsut a street tire...or both. I woudl go for the Khumo 711 anyhow. the 711 is a great all around tire. If i put the 225 on...i will be autoxing that.

Ditto. Works great.

...working on the SUBARU...and this is what transpired: Oooooooo........... AAaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh..... Woow............... "Thats so KOOOOL!!" Oh so sexy.... Hey, isnt that body kit on correctly? Hey, that turbo peice on the rear door is back on too. The coil overs were not too hard. Just had to modify the top peice by drilling out the spot welds on the two peices on either side that effectivly hold in rubber bushings, and then weld that washer on, and install the nuts. one top, and that one you see on the bottom. The bottom of the carrara damper is direct bold in...but you need some spacer/shims...i put a 3/4" on the inside, and a 1/2" on the outside. Both sides. On the bottom collar setting, with the adjustment as high as it will go...there is about 2 inches of travel...and its a tad too low for everyday use...as the axles are a little at an angle that i dont want. BTW: Those joints get HOT... There is a snap ring like ring just under the bottom of the collar sitting in a recess in the damper...I will take everything off and move the ring up, and play with some settings with it like that and see if i can get the ride height i want. it certinly is JUST RIGHT in terms of handling and stiffness for the back. Now I just gotta do the front..... And incase you guys/gals are wondering...i used 250 lb springs in the back. So if you want a set like that...for band new parts (which is really the only way to get them, cuz these people dont keep thse parts and 99% of the ones thrown out are NOT useable at all)...it will run you about $400 for all new stuff, all the parts you need to do it. i got these items from wrecked cars and parts that no one wanted...so it has cost me nothing so far....but there are top hats for the springs that I need to pay for and the spacers I might need to fork over some $ for those as well....those are used too, so I dont expect to be charged more than $20 in total. Oh, the NEW dampers would be Bilstein units. Also, i took the screen mesh out of the scoop...i looked gay.

There is a page somehwere when you can get the early IHI flanges, and the later ones....aka Leone and Impreza turbo flanges....I cant find the page...i have seen it tho.
-
Ive never been that far north. Ive got alot figured in these engines...but not everything....YET. the Spyder intake will be WAY better no matter what you use/do. You can use either intake with the TD04....but go spyder anyhow, its better. $55?!?!? Id say no...since I got 3 spyders for FREE. But yeah...$55 is a good deal if its a COMPLETE TURBO spyder intake manifold assy. Otherwise...its still good as long as you have the main plenum, and the lower peice that houses the injectors and routes coolant and some other crap.
-
Its better now. No more hoses popping off i hope...and the IC is strighter now.....i jsut gotta do some duct work on the scoop....cuz I think alot of air will escape around it under the scoop....But its ok for now. Test drive soon. And my Corbeau seat is installed now. Good thing im not 1 inch taller....now how am I going to wear my helmet at autoxs now????

Loyale overheating at high speed
WJM replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine still over heats...well, gets hot, 200-210 or so...at high speeds...like 100+ mph....hoses are fine...its got a nice huge core rad thats clean, WP is new, t-stat new...colling system clean...running stright water with some Valvoline racing coolant additive...whats the deal??? -
Project RX: Not Running... What went wrong?
WJM replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No idle.....spray carb cleaner ot brake clean around the intake gaskets....and in general, spray on and around anything that could be leaking on the intake track...before and after turbo. Make sure the EGR valve isnt hung open too. Sounds to me like a big leak somewhere. The turbo leak woudl not have anything to do with idle...believe me, I know...had a header crack so bad the turbo wouldnt spool...but it idled fine and steady at 1000. -
22301AA120: ~$100, none avalible. 22301AA130: ~$100, none avalible. 22301AA140: ~$100, none avalible. 22301AA150: ~$100, THREE (3) avalible. 22301AA220: ~$183, none avalible. 22301AA230: ~$119, none avalible. For those 3, I could come down to $95.11 after taxes...not including shipping. thats as low as I can go. I dont know what that one fits....but according to the screen i posted...i can guess it fits a carbed 4WD MT...1985 only.

I second the motion. Hell Yeah. If I had a sedan, Id also sport the STi wing as well. Well, ok, the 22B wing. It is adjustable. Yep...ICs are da bomb. How did it blow?? I think this one will do fine....maybe....I'll find out when it goes. And when it does....I'll jsut go Spyder. No hose needed...jsut a 2.5 inch piece of coupler 3 inches long.

lowering your car on a low budget.
WJM replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The best mod you can do is use some camber plates. The ones for Impreza/Legacy works fine. Get the WRX ones....The ONLY mod you will have to do to get them to fit, is extend the strut top/camber plate mounting holes out a little...like 2mm on each hole. The bolt pattern on the Impreza/Legacy are just a TEEEEENY bit bigger overall. Works great. i know this. Done it on two Leones. -
Since I work at Folger SUBARU in charlotte as a parts guy...i can look at SUBARU parts all day long. I didnt look up any prices...Ive got a Euro dizzy laying right over there....I dont ahve a use for it, I dont know the condition of the vac unit, but it came of of Marnix's turbo sedan that he ran on the Nordschleife alot. Ive got about 2 or 3 other dizzys laying about...i know one is a vac unit, and im going to swap that whole dizzy in. So this euro one is yours if you want it...just PU shipping and whatever you think its worth to ya. The 85 FED/2WD/AT/TURBO bit helps...i dont have info on the hitachi part number stuff... The diagram that shows the dizzy does NOT show any of the different VAUs...it jsut shows internals, and a whole assy...
-
Im thinking hybrid axles and maybe use the 4X140 hub/rotor might work...but i dont have the parts to test that out.

No. That engine died....the rings on cyl #1 are shot, and the exhaust valve on the same cyl developed a meted spot....so there was no compression. the other rings started to go really bad, it used 1 qt of oil every 50 miles. Smoked badly. So, 'new' exh valve in those heads, and a 7.7:1 turbo shortblock, and bam, its running again. Absolutely not. It looks fine on the STi, and it will look even better on my GL-10. The 04 STi scoop is absolutely SEXY. Don forget that it will get LOTS of ait to my IC....which is what I want. Plus is looks AWESOME.
