As far as tuning goes, the first two runs I had it come on too early and it bogged the engine. I just set the pressure switch to come on at high psi. Its definately not a science yet, lol. Ill know more the next time i get it out again (maybe a week from Sat, not sure yet). The turbo is definately holding back the top end. It launches real hard and pulls through 1 and 2, but then when its in 3rd @ speed it has a hard time keeping up. I might try to get a T3 for it, cause I know where i can get one. Im sure a vf7/11 would be much much easier, but its slim pickings at the yards. Oh and reaction times of" .068 .051 .085 .072 .207 (first run in a year, gimme a break) -
I think most of the cars that use individuals are inline 4's, so its easy to run the throttle cable to it. Whereas the subis would need 2 on each side. Plus no aftermarket support

Throttle Body Fuel Injection

I dont have an answer, but that is a pretty slick solution. A little cleaner than the cattywompus way i did my 5th injector. -

OK Kev, I'm gonna try to remember everything. *Weight Reduction -- Stripped interior, AC, all the random stuff to strip. *Tranny Cooler *Gauges -- big tach, boost, oil press, water temp *Swapped on V-belt pulleys instead of the serpentine setup. *Stock internals *Saab 900 intercooler -- rigged with homedepot pipe (smoother pipe is in its near future. *2.5" downpipe to Dynomax Race Bullet muffler *Boost @ 15psi -- just put a plastic tee in the wastegate line so it bleeds off. (I also have a better MBC in the works, but its not consistent enough to run yet) *5th injector. {Saab cold start injector, run off a pressure switch and a relay... much discussion about this on the board} *Gutted right headlight = Ram Air *K&N filter in the stock airbox. I think thats it. You shoulda seen the burnouts, got some good comments. But Im such a moron and forgot the cameras. -

Yeah, with the 150 whp, it comes out to 200 with 25% loss, and 215 with 30% loss... I really have no idea what the actual % is. But hell, 200 is sick. -

PS - Im a complete moron for forgetting to bring the camera for video/pix. That thing was doing some impressive burnouts, got some good crowd response. and like i said above, got the 5th injector working and tuned farily well. I feel that with a few more tweaks to get more top end I can be in the low 14s. I'm thinking of getting a new coil... I have read up a bit on what you guys are using, but I wanted a fresh count of who is having good luck with the certain brands. -
Just got back from Lebanon Valley Dragway (www.dragway.com) Good results to pass along. 14.586 @ 92.72 14.868 @ 91.53 The runs up until then were just trying to work out some setup issues because I havent run it in a year. Also got the 5th injector working. Pretty solid numbers though. Thats close to par with you top manual tranny guys. I noticed that the car launched real well, but the top end was lacking pretty bad. I was housing cars off the line, but having them blow by at like 1000ft. I got some ideas to play with for next time. I just checked a couple HP calculators, and it puts me at about 150HP to the wheels, through a 2wd auto. Who has a reasonable conversion rate to get crank HP for the auto??? {calling WJM, lol}

I wanted to, because we have a 6 sitting around, but it wouldnt bolt up on the '86 intake.

Hey, quick question. We just picked up a 88 turbo wagon that uses the hot wire MAF, question is can I put it into my '86 XT turbo that uses the flapper door (direct swap)? It seems as though that'd be an advantage having it. Any other issues/gremlins that might need to be addressed? Matty ps - havent gotten a chance to get home to finish the wiring on the 5th injector, will update as soon as it happens tho

(not old school, but) My 1990 Legacy just hit 280,000 miles a few days ago. The XT lives its life a 1/4 mile at a time, oh good ol vin diesel. -

1987 RX Turbo at the drags last night
mattyg41383 replied to BoostedBalls's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have a couple layers of heat shielding between the turbo and IC, so that keeps a bit of the heat off it. I only use it at the drags as something to mess with, no title or anything, so its not streetable. But anyways I know what you mean about moving it around. Im going to be swinging by the muffler shop, next time Im home, to get some scrap to re-pipe the intercooler. We just used HomeDepot plumbing pipe for the turbo-IC pipe, as you can see its pretty haggard. hell, the whole car is haggard, but its fun and cheap. I'll go ahead and put a relay in to run the injector. (nice video by the way, Im def gonna get some footage when I go) -

First I wanted to ask you guys if you think Ill need to use a relay between the pressure switch and the injector, or will the draw be low enough that the switch can handle it?? manny-> I didnt have my camera with me down there, and am back at school now, so this is the best i can do. Put a brass Tee in right after the fuel filter and ran a high pressure line with a banjo fitting at the end to the injector's top. Ground a flat spot in the saab intake pipe, and stuck the injector there for now. Im going to fab up a new pipe with better positioning in the near future. My manual boost controller and the pressure switch are over on the left side, but its pretty straight forward to install that. just put a Y in one of the pressuresed lines and stick the switch on, cap the other end of the switch. To set it, we power braked it to get boost up and used an Ohm meter to see when the switch tripped. Banjo fitting (i didnt know what they were called so heres a pic of one...) you'll need it if you use the same Saab one i did. pic from http://www.paragonperformance.com/Images/10mm%20Banjo%20Straight2.gif if putting the link makes using that pic legal then there it is -Matt -

Chuck (aka boosted) I was just looking back on the first post here... you ran 14.3 @90 , just wondering if you felt the speed was off a bit than what it should be. I ran 14.9 @93 with mine, i just thought that you'd be in the 95-96 range with that time. low 14s are rediculous, so obv theres nothing to complain about -

I probably would have found that 9psi is too early through testing, but knowing now will save some time, thanks. I wouldnt mind seeing the video, Im going to make some when i get over there. I'll PM you my email. I think I might have surpassed the $200 mark with the XT (car included), the only things purchased were: Battery, Tranny cooler, K&N panel filter, gauges, pressure switch, some random fittings, $5/gallon fuel. Everything else was gathered up around the shop. -
Short Throw 87 GL-10
mattyg41383 replied to NuclearBacon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My brother fabbed something up on his '93 Loyale wagon / '86 turbo motor car. Ill try to get ahold of him to ask about it. The throw is quite short, like only maybe 4" in the 1-2 direction. But the 1-3 direction is still long, but i dont know if there is much that can be done about it. Maybe in a day or two i can have some info. -matt -

mattyg41383 replied to BoostedBalls's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
OK, so last night I headed back home to the shop to get crackin on the install... We got the injector (80's Saab) mounted, fuel run to it. The saab injector uses a banjo fitting on the top, but we had pieces laying around and it worked out fine. Tested the funtionality by just putting 12V to it, worked fine. I got the pressure switch plumbed, and got that tuned to trip at 9psi. I didnt get around to wiring the switch up to the injector yet becuase the car then ran out of gas and we didnt have any race fuel and becuase 6pm came and i went to a car show with my bro and his '70 Nova (he got a trophy). so, the injector is in and working, the switch is in and working. just gotta wire the two together (no prob at all) and get it tuned right, then hit the track. -matt -
So Will, what idea do you have bouncing around in that mind of yours?

1987 RX Turbo at the drags last night
mattyg41383 replied to BoostedBalls's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got a Hobbs-style pressure switch off of ebay. You can set it to a specific pressure (between 4-15psi on the one i got) to activate the electric circuit and then kick the injector on. I think you can get the gist of how it works by looking at the pic... Once the stuff gets delivered Ill try to get this rigged up and put details. *edit* it was only $15 with shipping -
great art Styles Im a Bud man myself
