  1. You'll need a deep 1/4" E10 to get the diff stubs off, otherwise no special tools. Haven't ever shipped one but guessing about 25-30lbs or so (only had to lift mine from one diff to another on my work bench so little hard to judge weight).
  2. Did the test at least twice on each cylinder also right? According to my FSM that is at lower limits. I would do a wet test and report back. Also remember that engine sat for a few years so I would also run some seafoam/oil treatment through it and give it some miles...did have a possible 180k on it though. How did the cylinder walls look when you had it apart? Oh and here is a link to the 2 pages from the FSM about compression testing: http://subaru.kacsh.com/compressiontest.pdf
  3. Was it smoking at all? How far did you drive it (Any signs of overheating)? Positive it actually lost coolant and didn't just burp out some air bubbles? Got a vacuum/boost gauge on that baby? If so what was it reading at idle... Don't give up yet Mike, could still be something silly or stupid. Have also heard a few people say it took a couple warm-up/cool down cycles to get their new head gaskets to seal. I've never had that problem though. The stumbling would make me tend to think that maybe the intake gaskets didn't quite seal up (of course could do the same thing with a bad head gasket). Though my parts RX has a TOTALLY blown head gasket and it actually didn't stumble at all, was kinda hard to start but purred like a kitten and smoked out a city block within seconds!
  4. Hey I've only blown one (or has it been 2) front axles since I did that mod, and it was because I was jacking around trying to show off . Remember also my lifted rig has 29" tires . But you are correct Jeff IF I wanted to I could break a front axle on demand. Back on subject the manual for my Sedan says 55mph for 4wd engaged, I have exceeded this in several of my Subarus with no problems. Heck the RX is full-time 4wd and it sees 80mph pretty much everyday...totally different tranny though.....
  5. My wife's 94 Legacy 2.2 has a hole on the passenger side of the tranny about half way down to stick a flat blade screwdriver (or Subaru's tool) in to lock up the flywheel. Has worked fine for me a few times...
  6. Glad to hear it! I'm sure I have some exhaust studs laying around (know there is the ones on the parts RX), and I have welder if needed Mike...you know I'm not far.
  7. Not completely accurate but there is certain models of the brush guard that would be tough to impossible to get on an EA82. There is however at least one that is very easily adapted. It took me less than an hour, a drill, some spare metal, and some tough bolts to make it work. Mine is on my lifted sedan extremely well, have pulled and pushed several cars/trucks with it. Any of the other members who have seen it in person will attest to it's strength. I also did it in such a way that it can be taken off and put right on an EA81 again (since I didn't actually modify the guard or mounts at all, just made some spacers to push it out a tad).
  8. I have a full flex-a-lite oil cooler system on my RX for a few years now. Love it to death, keeps the engine cooler (turbo cooler too I'm sure) made a huge difference in engine temps when doing long turbo charging runs up the mountains out here. I orignally put it on because a guy I knew who owned a CarQuest auto parts store in the mountains used nothing but turbo wagons for delivery cars and swore up and down that the oil coolers were the only way he could keep them from cracking heads all the time. I tend to drive my RX pretty hard and have never had a problem with it, no leaks (unless you put on too small of a filter).
  9. Yea pretty sure Jeff is right.. 87 was the first year for it, but I think it's like a 50/50 chance if it's carb'd or FI. In 88 I think they went all FI.
  10. They are XT6 seats that came out of my parts RX....adjustable height! Which is a big bonus on a lifted rig (and I happen to be kinda short 5'7")
  11. Well Jerry has dibs on the push bar when my friend ever gets around to building me my bumpers. But think Jerry found one??? If so as soon as I get my bumpers built (been a year now...damn XRRA took over my friend's life) you can have dibs on it with the spacer plates I made to make it fit on an EA82, cheesy but they work and hold that sucker on there real good (pushed/pulled a many cars with it so far, including my 3/4 Chevy truck). As far as the rear discs....I totally agree it was the easiest upgrade and yea I can actually feel safe driving in traffic with 29" tires, still can't fully lock them up on dry pavement but I can stop! My wife will actually drive it now, she only did once or twice before because it was scary to try and stop quickly. We need more meets that we can actually all get together and go wheelin'... I have the week of Christmas-New Years off...hint hint
  12. Doesn't look like I'm going to make it either, they cut my vacation short and am working right now. Looks like it I will be working tomorrow also unless we somehow get done tonight. I was ready to go rock it after my earlier fun trip this week.
  13. Yes I have to change my mind (didn't read the part about the lift :-\ )...just pull the tranny..all those seals and timing belt, etc can be done with the engine in the car without too much trouble.
  14. Push Bar is for an EA81 that I adapted to fit on an EA82. 86 D/R Sedan, SPFI conversion, 4" Lift, LSD, rear discs, 235/75/15 M/T's, Split-stick,blah, blah..if you search for Project Cheap you'll come with a few threads about some of the mods and build-up of this car. Just recently threw on the rear discs and converted the rear diff to an LSD though .
  15. Pull the engine, I've done it both ways and still stick with pulling the motor. Easier work, more stuff to disconnect...but also gives you a good reason to reseal up the motor why you have it out (Cam Covers, Cam Seals, Crank Seal, Rear Main, Timing belts, etc...)
  16. 11 inches and counting at my place! Oh and I got some much nicer snow pics today Jerry...check it out: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68053
  17. Well not truly a snow day, but I am on vacation atm. Anyways as most of Rocky Mountain people know we are getting pounded with snow. Last measurement outside my house said 11" so far.. Well with that said I got to work in the freezing cold to get my IAC on the lifted rig to start half cooperating. So I took it out for some fun in all the snow. The LSD rear diff I put in a few weeks ago makes it kinda squirely like I expected. The M/T's are not good snow tires, not to much of a problem getting grip but stopping is a whole other story. Went to the fairgrounds near my house then went and trekked up to beautiful Red Rocks. Anyways very few pics taken since I was alone but here is a teaser...the rest of them are here: Snow Day!
  18. Golden Gate Canyon is just beautiful, used to have a friend that lived in the state park up there. Made that drive many times, some good wheeling around that area and up near the peak-to-peak/Rollins pass. If it means anything I have a solid wet 6-7" so far and still snowing...and Golden Gate always gets twice as much as my house. Though this snow is impeding my ability to get the IAC rigged/fixed/replaced on the lifted rig (GOD I need a garage!). Anyways some snow pics from this morning while working my a** off shoveling for my wife (who decided not to go anywhere after I did all the brushing off/shoveling). And my Roo dog who was helping me this morning... Going to try and get the lifted rig to cooperate but not going to hit the JY's in this weather just to get a replacement IAC. I don't have snow tires either but sure my M/T's will do just fine .
  19. Where's the two options at Shawn? Trying to plan around a family activity...but if it's not super far (and I can get my IAC on the lifted rig somewhat working) I should be there.
  20. Welcome a-board! Congrats on your purchase and there is tons of us in the greater Denver area on the board. We do meet up from time to time (should do it more often) but it's a great bunch of guys and gals.
  21. Where we headed Shawn? Should be able to make it, think there was something else on the 2nd but not sure. Have to check with the wife. (I have a brand new never used set of cables for a stock Subaru if anyone needs them, they were in the back of the sedan when I bought it and defintely won't fit on my 29" tires )
  22. Whoops forgot to update this thread... Last week/weekend I had some more time to fool around with it. Put some new NGK's in (old ones still looked perfect but hey), and went to swap the Mass Air Flow sensor and what do you know...... The intake boot was slightly loose at the turbo, enough that in the right situation it would suck in air, un-metered too... :banghead: Went ahead and replaced the MAF anyways, now I have a strange idle is loopy by like 20-40 rpms but drives me nuts as it used to idle dead on. So going to swap my other MAF back on this weekend. Anyways been driving to/from work and around since Saturday night and no problems. So I'm 99% sure it was just that loose intake boot. And that's my kinda luck peeps! Something totally dumb the whole time.
  23. Well barely made it home, surging got extremely bad again, died several times..but I did make it home! This problem is really ticking me off..but here's what I learned in my trip home tonight: Starts to cut off, if you try and give it gas (even flooring) it WILL die unless you stick the clutch in and free rev it, even then it's 50/50 if you can keep it running No jumping/change in the tach when it does this (unless of course it dies out then the rpm's smoothly go down to 0)- So engine is still spinning and ignition is working it seems, while this happens. Did it a few times while under boost, turbo light still on and showing positive manifold pressure even when it's dying out on me, or trying to The smell returned today while surging/dying out, and I can now say it does not smell like unburnt fuel.. in fact I've never smelled anything like it before and can't even describe it. I may swap the MAF tonight and take it for a drive, but at this point I'm pretty well sick of it and will prob just drive the lifted rig until I can positively identify the problem and get it fixed. I got a good solid two years after my engine install/redoing everything, so this is payback for two years of being trouble-free I guess.
  24. Well starting to think you guys may be on to something with the bad tank of gas. Ran perfect yesterday to and from work....started bucking a bit on my way to work this morning. So instead of turning around to get the lifted rig I kept it running and headed to the closest gas station. Was down to around a 1/3rd of a tank left, so filled it up with my regular 91 octane (highest we get out here, and always what I put in the RX). Did some surging/bucking the next two miles to work but they weren't as hard as before..will see how my drive home goes (crossing fingers)...
  25. Hey Scooby you do realize that this is the Colorado run right? Cool if you come down from the PNW just to go on a snow run with us Rocky Mountain guys...hell after all Subaru_dude came out here from TN just for a barb-a-que
