  1. ya what that does for you is create more cylnder pressure and make it easy to burn the fuel and air mixture that enters the cylnder. if you want to mess around with it you could probably continue to advance the timing. just make sure that your not detanating! if you detonate it will eat your head gasket and over heat valves and bad stuff. im not sure what is too much for an ea82 subie, but i know with convetional v-8's you can run 33 to 36,38 degrees BTDC. just listen for a pinging sound like others on this thread have mentioned. im not sure what the out come will be with more timing but i do know that the further you advance it, the more cylinder pressure, the more power, and if you carb is tuned right more efficient. depending on how far you go though it might be slightly damaging to the engine. so play around with it and see what the results are. i know im curious to see how it turns out.
  2. to check the wheel bearings, jack up the car and wigle each wheel up and down. it is very noticeable if there is slop in the bearings they need to be replaced. i say up and down because if you wiggle side to side you may be seeing slop in the steering instead of your wheel bearings
  3. since we are on the topic of tranny's, do you guys ever have the problem when your driving and the gear shifter rattles like a rattle snakes rattler? it buzzes and makes you want to shoot your passenger or something crazy! it stops making the noise if i hold it or if i push it back when im in 2nd or 4th gear
  4. dude i bet its your wheel bearings, or doj or cvj, i just did mine and no more noise
  5. on the fly wheel there are some marks. the fly wheel hole is right where the engine bolts to the transmission. there should be a rubber plug there but if there isnt then oh well, and if there is remove it. hook the timing light up to the #1 spark plug wire, and the other leads to your battery start the car, and and find the marks on your fly wheel that say BDC, TDC, and then other numbers. dont use the marks that are for the cam timming, its pretty obvious with ones are witch. once you have the timing light on those marks set the timing for like 10 or 11 degrees BTDC ( do this by turning the distributor ). oem is eight but that is for emissions bull ************, you should notice better fuel economy, and more power!
  6. ok ill just be gental with second. im not going to change the oil though cause i all ways keep it toped off and i fully replaced it when i bought the car 3 years ago. and its castrol full sythentic 75/90wt or 80/90wt. i cant remember i know i picked the best wt for cold weather cause i live in montucket.
  7. hey idasho how do you add pics like that? are they taken from a camera that has a pretty high mega pixel rate? cause i cant add photos from my camera i guess there too big
  8. how do i post pics? i tried posting some and adding them to a message as "attachments" but i didnt work
  9. how thin of a head gasket can you run to try and get the cr up
  10. wow, thats higher than i would expect in an older 4 banger. so do you have to worry about valve clearance in an ea81?
  11. there is probably about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play before any resistance is felt on the pedal. from fully compressed as i let the pedal out it grabs at the begening of the end of the through.
  12. ya i have an ea82 85 gl station wagon. and when i shift from first to second @ about 3000 - 32,3500 rpms if i dont let them drop to about 2500 it doesnt grind, but it makes like a vibration/grinding feel, but no grinding noise. so you guys dont possibly think that it could be that the clutch is not completely disengaging .
  13. how do you know when to get a new clutch? shifting into second is rough if i dont let the rpms drop, so do i replace the clutch or just adjust linkage?
  14. this thread ALMOST makes me want to ditch me ea82 but not quite.
  15. i think i will just pull the motor, im going to do other maintenance procedures.
  16. right now im replacing both front wheel bearings and the stuts, in the process though i sand blasted the strut housing and the hub plates, and rotor guards. now they are a sleek flat black. i will put up pics here soon.
  17. honestly the only way to simplify that vacum mess is to just switch to a weber. i have a craptachi right now and im converting here soon. otherwise dont worry about it. mmm..... with the above post i wonder where the 4-12 beers went? ha ha
  18. so if i put a skinny tire on a wide wheel it wont fit, and if i put a wide tire on a skinny wheel it will bubble.
  19. idk probably like a weekend/hunting wheeler. so does the size of the tire have anything to do with the with the width of the rim?
