  1. dunno if they come standard, but my electronic shoulder harness belt on the drivers side door isnt werking every time it should. could this be old wiring, bad plug? i notice that all the wires are in the door panel and sometimes it'll work yet some other times (usually the times i need to use the freeway - go figure) it wont no matter how many times i slam the door with the car both on and off. this only recently started happening and come to think about it only started after i got my a/c fixed. they have nothing to do with each other that i know of but just in case it does i noted it. anyway its tired so good luck deciphering this post. thanks for any help in advance.
  2. wow... sounds a lot like my friend's story, except not as stupid (ahem..): My friend steve, after getting into trouble with MY mom for being an "evil influence on me" when she found out we off-roaded in my sister's geo storm, decided that he and one of his other friends were going to take HIS mom's 2000 ford windstar off roading to show off its "kick-arse accelleration, dude" (his words). well, he took it about 10 miles in the middle of the desert and flipped it on its side. right before this occurred, he and his friend realized they werent wearing seatbelts while sidewinding at 60 miles an hour. he had just plugged his belt in when he hit a whoop and spiraled out of control. after the crash he climbed out of the window and saw what he had done. he stared at the van for 15 mins just wondering what his parents would think about this situation. they flipped the van over and found out it wouldnt start (due to the emergency shutoff switch in all fords when they flip over to avoid leaking gas). he hiked 10 miles back, got on the phone, and called me. at first i thought it was a joke, then he started to panic. i couldnt help but laugh at his complete stupidity. it should be in the darwin awards honorable mentions. alright, storytime's over.
  3. ho.....ly.....crap.... ultimate off-roading subaru wagon of death...
  4. This could be a good idea, if everyone wanted to pitch in. everyone who wants to save the legacy of older subarus should be intrigued. any admin that are reading, would it be possible to start a donation towards a subaru parts lockup? we could get an enclosed warehouse for the parts, and considering how much stuff we can find, be able to distribute it to other members pretty cheap (considering it would be completely self-funded, anyone that donates could be able to retrieve stuff from the locker for a smaller price than those that dont donate). since a lot of members are in WA area, it could be there. or perhaps WY because it seems like a more rust-free place than by the ocean. is this too much, have i gone nuts? heck, when the old subarus are considered relics, it could make a great profit to the public if we wanted to, or turn it into a museum (k, that was just dumb. dont comment on that please) anyone who would support this, give your two cents, or a whole dime if you have it.
  5. dont know much about rust, but dont be afraid of how long itll last. give another 50,000km before worrying (estimate, im too lazy to convert from mi to km) about your car's performance. a couple things go out quite easily such as cv joints, so depending on how bad you beat up your car it should still hold you up. search this site for any questions you have about it and you should be a-ok. if you want a price range go to kbb.com. even tho its americano it should help you find out its worth.
  6. these guys at the vegas mexi-can-pull-apart-for-cheaper-than-you-can wanted 100 bucks for a 14" completely naked steel. not even the lug nuts, those are $5 extra, even tho theyre lying in the dirt half buried. its complete profit they make, too. they tow cars, possess cars, steal cars, rip out the speakers and the batteries, and resell them for double theyre worth. we need a subaru yard for poor people like me who just want cheap parts. all in favor of a ultimate subaru club locker say "I"!
  7. You know, I'm starting to think that going to the junkyard is a meaningless endeavor. I went there yesterday, and spent probably an hour just trying to find where the subarus were. there were two, a 86 gl in *eh* condition, and what looked like a justy in three different pieces with a burned out interior. my friend and i rounded up as many emblems as we could (the only things still intact) and headed towards the door. "25 bucks fer the 4 of them," the owner said. half tempted to chuck the emblems at him, i declined and threw them back in the dirt where i found them. we walked out the door and my friend *found* a couple emblems still in his pockets. whoops. the junky was a completely unsuccessful mission. the motto should be "if you can find it, we'll charge you double for it!" fits it perfectly. anyone else got good/bad stories? sharing is caring.
  8. not that i have much experience in them, but for the ones ive actually driven myself id have to say that my 94 (or any year) loyale wagon is a very reliable car. not only that, its boxy enough to look good with a couple of mods on the exterior, unlike those round model cars that look too early nineties-ish. plus all the good features that have been listed in previous posts, it has TONS of room! i can put a mattress from a queen size bed in the back with the seats folded down. i can put an extra bench seat in the back for hauling all my car-less friends around, i can put an awesome sound system and not have to worry about how big the subs should be, i can put a full size computer, a tv/dvd/vcr, a ps2/xbox/gamecube + 4 friends to play it, and a sm. fridge in the back seat if i wanted to. not to mention the a/c when its too hot, heat when its too cold, power windows when its too nice NOT to have them down, and ultimate road trip capabilities. i dont think life would go on without one. in the future, the next sooby i would like to get for fun is an 87 xt6 5mt, 4wd, h-6, huge moonroof, and a dash console that looks like it should be on an f15 eagle. it seems like it could be a great rallycross racer.
  9. kbb.com, the blue book site. just go thru the used car value thing and it usually gives pics to them. cars101.com is a subaru site that has most of the cars as well. try that.
  10. im going to the junky tomorrow..ill look for you, but i almost can guarantee anything that looks like it deals with sound in any way would have already been ripped off by now. all the junkys are in a bad part of town that even dobermans couldnt protect the stocks. as for on the site, post on the marketplace and theres a rare chance you can find something you like. either way id still upgrade, bose are the top for about a month before they get outdone by generic brands for about half the price. its just a name anymore, like sony. good luck, im sure you'll need it. skeet
  11. i almost cried reading this. well, not really, but it sure depressed me. ill be sure to rescue as many old school soobys as i have money for. i dont think i could be without one.
  12. i say dont wait around for that bose system.. although bose is one of the best, for the same price their probably still running on that system you can get something that sounds better. who knows, maybe even a cd player, too! take it to a sound shop and they'll hook you up with a better deal than bose could, i guarantee it. if you are computerly (?) inclined at all, PM me and ill tell you how i rigged up my 6.1 surround in my car for under 100 bucks.
  13. Found out what the a/c problem is... freon. the mech i took it to to recharge my freon decided to 1. let the remaining freon from the system (r12) out into the open air 2. instead of converting the system pumped some more r12 into the car and 3. filled it by sticking the bottle of freon on the valve and let it flow. no pressure gauges, no capturing the released freon, just the most pathetic job ive seen. im taking it back and making him fill it up to the pressure that its supposed to be at. if you decided to go with the manual switch, be aware that if you keep it on you risk blowing up your compressor, which run (from what ive seen) at about $500-750. you may have a different problem than me, but if we both have the same symptoms then it probably isnt. its actually quite a common mistake, and can be easily solved. voila!
  14. i was considering making it look nice, but then my pennypincing mind came on and said "to hell with that, im spraypainting." i guess it mentioned doing the bumper as well because otherwise it wouldnt match. black spray paint it is. pics when i get it done. naw, scratch that, pics when i get that and the limo tint done next week. that is, if i can borrow a digital camera from someone.
  15. im tryin to find a sooby for my friend who just lost a lot of money on the last car he bought (93 saturn with too many problems to list plus jacked up tranny for $2200) and im tryin to get it locally. so far the classifieds show a 87 gl wagon 2wd 5mt in "*good cond!*", to quote from the ad. $800 bucks. should run better than the car he's got now, and for almost a third the price. unless its not worth my/his time at all to check it out, we'll prolly look at it soon and get a better scan of it. maybe if it sucks ill make the guy/girl an offer for like 200 and go trash the thing in the desert and catch it on film before i drive it off a cliff (without plates, of course). ideas?
  16. guess a car wash aint necessary anymore...well, maybe the top half...
  17. i'd like to redo the trim itself with a metal alternative and powdercoat it black since a little bit towards the rear was already torn off, by an oh-so generous neighbor (who also egged the thing), which will be matching powdercoats with the grill protector and rack eventually. below the trim will definetely be black, whether it be spray paint or i up it to a more pro-looking car paint which is hardly worth the money since ill prolly end up taking it off while rallying anyway. the big ol' picnic bench bumpers i could probably get some rhino and coat that, that way it kind of has a grip to it. itll certainly be interesting. i just ordered some decals that are all white and im gonna use the superswamper as a racing stripe (heehee). i believe i can get some stuff off other cars cuz im goin to the junk yard in a couple of days, and while im there look for whole cars i can rip off the lot to use for parts (the folks'll love to see our 6th car sitting in the driveway on cinderblocks). do you reccomend any type of paint, or just spray? i seem to have that in abundance...
  18. nothing sucks more than a rusty car. not only does it look disgusting, if it gets in the engine compartment say goodbye to ever trying to fix it without blowing up in frustration. youd be lucky to get more than a couple bolts out. if i had a really nasty rusty car id just take it to the desert with a couple of friends and ride the hell out of it. if it flips, flip it back over. if it catches on fire, leave it there. its not even worth selling after the rust kicks in. hey, and if you ride it hard enough, the rusty engine might de-lodge itself. yay. of course, you dont exactly have a desert to do that.... tell you what, you can throw it off a cliff and videotape the explosion. thatd be cool. just make sure no one's underneath it, cuz that would kinda be murder. disclaimer: whether I reccommend these courses of action, im sure the law wouldnt.
  19. you are making sure youre completely stopped before throwing it in rev, right?watch the rpms while you shift, see if the engines coming down from high levels...should be round 1000 rpm or lower when you shift to reverse, or are allowed to anyway.
  20. if you want rust free, steer clear of buying from ocean states. thankfully mine's never seen water in its entire 10 yr lifespan since its been in the vegas valley the whole time. im sure ebay's got something, if you trust the seller. good luck, im sure you'll need it to find a rust free car in your state.
  21. just for kicks, how ugly would my loyale look if i spray painted the whole bottom of the car underneath the trim and wheel basins? im threatening to do it if i dont get a reply, heh. and while im at it i cant find for the life of me a roof rack for my car prebuilt anywhere. any ideas?
  22. this site's got stuff that people trade/sell. carsdomain.com's got stuff ive seen if you get to the right page. ebay, heh, thats a given. dunno, i usually get from stores locally - less hassle and i dont really need anything too exotic for them.
  23. argh! too many problems with the car! must destroy by driving off ledge and collecting insurance money! maybe that'll fix my supposed cv joint problem...
  24. just for the buying rep, make sure he's got all the maintenance receipts and the title. check the dates and what they replaced, and also where the repairs/title were located. i almost got conned into buying an 87 xt with a broken speedo for a grand. if i could buy it as a parts car now, i would... for 300. it ran but it wouldnt have for too long: brakes were nearly toast, shocks were shot, engine struts were loose, tires were bald, odo fried at 150,000 in 1994, no a/c, broken tape deck (not even cd player/radio), bad wiring, stuck in 2wd cuz button wouldnt activate, 5mt with non-working 5th gear, completely trashed interior/exterior, rust, etc. etc. etc. bottom line, if you want to use this car without replacing EVERYTHING, get one with a clean title and smog. oh, and before you buy it, make the seller do the smog for you. make sure to see the paperwork on it and then consider it to be truly worthy. some people dont care about this stuff and just gut the car for fun and completely rebuild it. i say if you want to use this as a daily driver follow the advice given...and anything else you can think of. good hunting this, by skeet a.k.a. scott
