  1. try the usmb marketplace. theres always peeps from seattle area selling their hairy subeasts. and were all honest for the most part here, too.
  2. I got mine done for less than a dollar. FREE. but you can do it yourself for tons cheaper than 300 buckaroos. get a conversion kit from r12 to r134 and a bottle of r134 - the bottles run about 12 bucks depending on where you get it and the kits i have no idea but theyre really cheap. dont take it to a shop or theyll way overcharge you for a job that you could do yourself in less than a half an hour.
  3. Thats awesome, hope you can keep your car in fancy schmancy condition since its the only one in europe. are there many places to off-road there? i was planning a trip to europe for next year (focusing on germany and italy) but had to cancel it to buy a subaru. europe's probably better off without me there.
  4. hey, i was in carson bout 4weeks ago... how bad was the waterfall fire? heard it burned over 100,000 acres or something (i may be stretching... im tired). had friends that had to be evacuated from their house. crap, i just hijacked this post. reply inconspicuously, or just pm me bout it. 'uh, yeah, a white subaru, nope didnt see one.' (sry)
  5. seattle's the place to look, thats for sure. wish i lived there, id never have a shortage of parts. rust isnt fun. anyway, to address your questions: 1. autos in subarus from what i gather suck. manuals are better in the fact that they are funner, more efficient, and last longer. Fun: the fact that you can control what gears you want to be in is great compared to having to wait for some computer to tell it to shift. off-roading, which is what subarus are born to do, is much more enjoyable in manual as well. you can get "into it" more with a manual, versus automatics is like someone else shifting for you. yuck. unless you like that. then its more like, 'mmm'. Efficiency: manuals are more gas efficient because you're the one shifting, as said before. im sure theres other more technical things that i cant think about right now, but just know that its like 5mpg better minimum all the time. Long-lasting and wintery-fresh: well, i think they do anyway. depends on how you shift. 2. If you could get a GL for the same price as a loyale go with the GL. they are way better in the sense that they have d/r (dual range 4wd - high/low) and tons more features. the loyale is like the weakened out version of the GL with the same body so its still not bad if you have no choice. i got my 93 loyale (i dont think they made 94... but thats what my sig says and is on my title) with 110,000 miles on it (nothing compared to most people on this board) for $1600 fully loaded with automatic stuff manual 5spd 4wd spfi ea82 blah blah blah no rust good interior but friggin crapped up a/c. bad subject. if you can get all the features that i have PLUS good a/c then its worth probably $1400. i got jipped. I dont know anything bout GLs so research that on kbb.com or something 3. all subarus pretty much have the same problems according to what is posted on this forum... usually a/t's are big problems, turbos, a/c's, push-button 4wd (which the loyale has), axles/chassis/cv boots/etc (if it was off-roaded these go out faster), and more that i cant think of. this probably wasnt too helpful but at least get a manual tranny... youll be happier.
  6. im not too knowledgeable here, but this problem probably has happened before to others and unless the radiator is broken for sure then wait on replacing it. believe me, im having heat problems and i cant run my a/c without hitting the red on my temp gauge. im stuck having to rely on my window-rolling skills to get any air at all. unfortunately, we now have a heat warning - it has reached 120 in some areas down here. i think thats hotter than washington's ever gotten, so you'll live. rad's are expensive and being as tho it probably isnt whats wrong with the car i wouldnt buy it yet. im getting this info from this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18048 sry if im wrong.
  7. dang, thought i was original. see post "help for a DIY" couple pages back.
  8. yeah, sorry for posting wrong info, but you didnt have to yell *sniff*. whatever, all part of my learning experience i guess.
  9. well, for a fact i have all the power features... seatbelts, locks, windows, mirrors, steering, etc. im envious of your 88gl tho, wanna trade?
  10. ah, thank you for specifying. i am now more learned. why the heck did they get rid of the gl's? i would much rather have one of those. loyales are just too weak to take over for them.
  11. hahahahaha, sport edition... what a joke!!! never ever heard of something like that on any older soob. thats something car manufacturers put on their minivans to make the soccermoms think that they can tote their kids around faster than the regular SUV gas hogs. either way, i really doubt its got much more of a kick than a regular loyale. 4wd, power everything, loyales didnt come in turbos as far as i know so just the stock ea-82 spfi engine, and maybe they decided to throw a custom pedal plate kit in or something. you know, the ones that look like the foot? thats definitely sporty. either way, its a soob, so happy off-roading, and make sure to spit in any open honda windows you happen to see on the road. then drive off and give the bird and hide because theyre probably faster than you. unless you can get on the dirt, because only soobs have 4wd. alright, thats just me. im done now. shutting up.
  12. i have the same problem with my 93 loyale, with the gauge reading really hot. i wish these things had actual temperatures instead of just a line separating 'good' from 'hot'. anyway, as seen before, after about 10 mins. of driving the car gets in the red. i will try reading the temp. from the outside using a laser reader but does anyone know what the temp. in the red is said to be at? is it in the manual? thanks, skeet
  13. got the decals today, awesome. cant wait to wash my subaru to put them on. i drew the cool-aid man on the back window with my finger thru the dust the other day. i get weird looks from the people behind me now. heehee, maybe ill make a decal like that.
  14. the reason i want a sus. lift is because there's 101 cheaper ways to do it vs. a body lift, which im assuming will last a lot longer than it as well. i would only do the lift to make it look nicer. axles are cheap compared to a lot of parts, and im not a serious rally jock so i dont think i'd ever use the lift for its more practical purpose. i notice the struts would stand a little crooked (more than already so) if i added the lift, and it would not exactly be a comfortable ride, but it would look nice and thats all i want out of this car, since i wont be using it for serious off-roading. the tires that i add wouldnt be that much bigger since it would just be a 2" or smaller lift so its still good for a traveling car. i want to get some looks out of it, yet dont need the performance (kind of like kit cars - look nice, but just not the real thing). is this a stupid idea, would it be too much of a problem for just a show off vehicle?
  15. whats the pros/cons of a suspension lift versus a body lift?
  16. paid him a visit about the same time you posted that message... i believe it was the last time ill intentionally see him about my car. i got him to bolt that magnet thing back on (all he could do was complain, but had to do it because if he didnt he knew i had grounds for a suit) and took off with my a/c to get my limo tint from a friend. drove home from the tinters in a nice, cooled, blacked out car. i almost cried when i saw a fellow subaru (think it was a legacy) abandoned on the side of the freeway... i was tempted to pick it up but it was gone by the time i came back. poor subie.
  17. aint that illegal? im thinkin of doing that to my non-lifted wagon by cutting the pipe off at the cat and save it and then welding some sort of brace to it so i can interchange the pipes come emission time (one for the sound, and one to pass the test )
  18. hmm... redecorating sounds fun... i think im just gonna forget about it rather than spend the next 3 years of my life trying to get him to cough up the moolah...im going down there today to get my nuts back (sounds a little weird there) that hold that magnet thingy in place so i can use my a/c safely for my 45 min. trip downtown to a tint shop (limoru is what im calling it from now on...not).
  19. i got 2 soob manuals yrs 82-92 for all models if you still need something... WJM seems to have you covered with his FSM-owning self. which i may need for reference in the future. if i ask nicely.
  20. funny that this topic came up... i have been taking my subie to a place called 'auto performance' that specialize in imports such as hondas toyotas and mazdas. i had some a/c problems that had to get worked out. i took it to the guy and he said that all i needed was a recharge. he busted out a can of r134a, and right when he was about to put it in, realized that it was an r12 system. so he converted it by spilling the remaining r12 into the air (ahem, illegal) and put in the conversion kit. he then pumped the r134a into the system. when i turned it on it didnt work. his excuse was 'you have to give it a little time for it to get used to the new chemical.' then i didnt know better so took his word for it (not that i could understand him in the first place since he had a thick accent). a week later i brought it back because the a/c still wasnt working. i had narrowed the problem down to it being one of the switches, so he said first of all, 'this has nothing to do with the r134a i put in, so i will be charging you to fix it.' this was not true. before the a/c problem there was a coolant leak and a broken water pump that he fixed. i dont know what he did, but when i brought it in to do that the a/c was working fine. when he gave it back was when the problems started to happen. anyway, he did the work and gave it back for $220. his excuse for the high cost was 'i had to replace all the wiring in the switches.' which he didnt do, by the way. i should have checked it WHILE i was at the shop, but stupid me i was so excited about my car finally having a/c that i completely let it be. when i checked it yesterday (since, once again, something wasnt working) i noticed that none of the wires were replaced, just taken out. he had bypassed the pressure switch and the only wire he actually used was a small blue connector wire probably 8" long. it was right on the top left of the hood next to a fuse (i think the 4wd enabler fuse, if ive read correctly), so it couldnt have taken too much time to get in. and he didnt have to diagnose the problem, we already knew what it was before we took it in. i also noticed that he took off the magnet reader on the front of the compressor and never put it back on. in the times that i used the a/c it very well could have blown. and heres the kicker: when i asked if i could use a card to pay, he said he only took cash. i got the cash and payed him, waiting for a reciept. it never came, so i inquired. the answer, 'oh, we never give receipts when paying with cash.' hmm. sounds a little odd to me. so i got him to scribble down whatever he says he replaced and the prices down on a piece of paper. my question is: do i have enough evidence to take him to court, or should i not even attempt it? one thing's for certain, i will not be taking my car to a mechanic for a long time. its all DIY for a while.
  21. awesome.. i was a week away from performing that on my 94 loyale, (the cvs decided to click in small turns now) and those oughta help a lot. if i can get a hold of a digital camera i'll do the same when i replace the rest of the car since it seems to be dying on me quite quickly. gracias, amigo.
  22. loyales took over the gl (i think) in 1990 and continued until 94. quite a short lifespan. does that reflect its performance, perhaps? p.s.: im also a 94 loyale owner. and proud of it. (although i'd be prouder of an svx if i had one of those)
  23. is that the model where the hood scoop was on the side of the car, like this: http://www.xt6.net/images/galleries/Phil's/eyesore.jpg if so, naw, dont want it. in the case that it is a center scoop (considering they ever had a center scoop on them.. i dont know xt's very well), could you get a picture of it? im debating whether i should make my own scoop to fit on my 94 loyale or just find a pre-fabbed one. if im too picky, just ignore me. thx.
  24. if youre carrying stuff like skis, i'd recommend the wagon and black out the insides of the rear windows with either a 100% tint or cardboard or something of the sort. (cardboard's for cheap people like me who dont really care how nice it looks... "if it is ugly, spray paint or duct tape it" is my philosophy.)
  25. i read a prev. thread on how to diagnose the switch signals.. and i still dont get it. maybe its because its late at night (for me anyways), but i know i cant risk being pulled over by the fuzz and being seen with a shoulder harness that i tie around my headrest so it looks somewhat like im wearing it correctly from a distance. cops arent THAT dumb. tomorrow before heading for work im gonna try and mess with the wiring, see if something's not connecting. its weird how it does this all the sudden tho, and i dont exactly have a warranty (or a junkyard to get spare parts from) to fix it. any help at all, even one of meatwagon's whimsical off-the-top-of-my-head ideas. argh, why cant they just be manual? its not like i forget my seatbelt every time i drive, or anything. or why couldnt it have gotten stuck in the 'closed' position? only me, i suppose...
