Spare parts
Red92 replied to 1Subaru1's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
You could grab the catalytic converter(s). Not sure if they would fit your car or not, but they are $$$ to replace. Does the wrecker care how much you pull? You could essentially part the whole car out if you wanted... pull & re-sell everything that comes off! -
Salvage titles for minor damage! Argh!!!
Red92 replied to Red92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the info, Miles. For the record, I'm not going to buy this car... I already have too many. But it is good to know that the process isn't as bad as it seems.... -
Salvage titles for minor damage! Argh!!!
Red92 replied to Red92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think the only people with full coverage are the ones with the nicest cars... I've never done it myself, but it seems to be difficult in Wisconsin... you have to have VINs, seller signatures, and receipts for all of the parts used to rebuild it... has to have an inspection... extra fees... can't be on the public roadways until it is fixed/inspected, etc. Honestly though, I have no idea what would happen if you took a car like that one into the inspection station and said "Yep, here it is. No receipts, I didn't fix anything. It's fine (and legal) as it is." -
It just kills me to to keep finding cars like this. CLEAN cars, with low mileage and little to no rust keep being given salvage titles, or even stripped of their titles and sold with a "junked car bill-of-sale"... due to "front end collision damage" or other trivial things like that. Perfectly good, running driving cars... which are now in situations that make it hugely difficult for someone else to ever drive them again... all because an insurance company doesn't want to do <$500 of repair work for a car so lightly damaged that many of us wouldn't even consider it to need fixing. :banghead: I swear, for these EA82s, 80%+ of the "salvage" cars I've found (which is a LOT of them) are in significantly better shape than the "clean title" cars that are still on the roads around here.

Uses for an old 5sp push button shifter handle

Would any of these work? http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=ejection+seat+%28sticker%2C+decal%29 -
Found out something else interesting... My car was ONE YEAR OFF from having the strut springs replaced for free.

I don't know about you, but if I had a Subaru flat 12, I would do whatever it takes to put it into a Loyale. Moving the firewall, driving from the back seat, mid or rear-engined.... it's going in there. -

Anyone want to get a FREE VIN check?
Red92 replied to Idasho's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, all of mine have a line for every renewal... That would be my guess. Like they needed a way to say that the mileage might not be accurate.. but for a car which wasn't old enough to be exempt from reporting the mileage. Someone at the junkyard forgot to file the paperwork? Either that, or they had plans to fix/resell it and never got around to it? 451 miles in 10 years?? Even little old ladies in small towns put more mileage on 'em than that! Heck, you could go most of that distance on a single tank of gas! Assuming it didn't go bad in that length of time... -
Ouch! Do you have a link to the original site? I'm wondering how it was originally loaded... if it was facing backwards, it is very possible that there wasn't enough weight on the hitch... or perhaps it was loaded facing forward, but the car was too far forward on the trailer and there was too much weight on the hitch? Either way, what a mess. :-\ Doesn't look like the tie-downs did their job either.... is that just rope??

Prolonging my Clutch for two more weeks (or so)
Red92 replied to Rick James's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On my last Legacy, the clutch started doing the same thing. I had just moved to a new town, and tried to limp it for another week while I could do some research to figure out where to take it. In the end, the car made the decision for me. We took it to the closest shop in town because it was all downhill to get there. If your car has given you an advance warning, I would suggest fixing it ASAP to save the costs of a tow truck! -
I just did the VIN check from a tip by Idasho: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=127525 I found out that I'm the fifth owner of my GT, and there are no reports of accidents or anything else. A completely clean history. Here's the ownership record: up through 37k miles and 06/1997, it was a lease vehicle in CT 37k through 99k miles and 11/2001, it was privately owned in CT 99k through 113k miles and 09/2002, it was owned in MA past 113k (no more mileages given) and through 09/2005, it was owned in PA from 09/2005 through 10/2011, it has been in WI .. and then I bought it.

New Steel wheels 4 x 140 Feeler
Red92 replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Products for your Subaru
I know this is an old thread, but are the 15" AA-style wheels even still available? Allied Armament doesn't seem to be around any more, and the wheels look to have been taken over by Smith's Outfitting Specialties (sosfab.com). I sent them an email back in late August, ready to buy a set of 5, and never heard anything back. If the AA wheels are out of the picture, and you can reliably produce 15" wheels, there may be a market for them. -
So I had a nice chat with ShawnW on the phone yesterday. He's going to build up a pair of front strut assemblies for me, with a pair of used springs left over from an Outback suspension swap, but new strut cores and new top mounts. Should be an easy swap for me to put them on, and with the new parts, they should be good for a long time. Thanks Shawn! In the mean time, I'm working on getting things ready to do that. Going to pull the front wheels, hopefully tomorrow, to mark the camber bolts, slot the brake line brackets, and give the bolts a quick shot of penetrating oil. If everything goes to plan, I'm hoping to get them swapped next weekend.

Out of curiosity, what do the spoilers cost from the dealership? That was 1982gl4, he posted the pictures in my thread about my '94 Legacy GT: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=126886&page=6 A few pages back in the thread and you can see some other first-gen Legacies with rear spoilers, finished and painted. It's somewhat low on my priorities right now, but I'm keeping an eye out for a rear spoiler for myself.

Even if you are short on time, I would second bheinen74's advice to check this out, preferably before you leave: It shouldn't take too long to cut or pry the hood open, and you wouldn't have to worry about it while you are gone. Plus, once the hood is open, you will have a lot better idea what kind of damage you are up against.
