subaru brat 1985 restoration
Looks great! I just did the same wheel well treatment on my '86 brat http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=136476&page=6 Are you welding up the other side of the plate too or using something else to keep water out? I coated it with polyurethene roofing sealant. We'll see how that holds up...

New Orleans Brat!
The rear wheel wells has some pretty nasty rust... so that needed to be tackled asap and the first stages of it happened this weekend! (p.s both wheel wells were welded up, but I don't have a complete set of photos from each, so this is a bit of a hodge-podge to show the process) Here's some photos of before: First, we just cut out the rusted spots: This was all that was left of the actual sheet metal from the wheel well on one of the sides: And sanded away the rest of the rust: The holes had to be patched up, so another piece of sheet metal was welded on: A few layers of paint probably wouldn't hurt The new piece to be welded on, note the holes left to secure it to the strut mount: And it's on: The other side (holes not filled in yet): Of course, there's a good deal of grinding still to do and some painting. In the mean time, I'm loving how my brat looks without the top on!!!! Pretty productive weekend :-p:cool:

New Orleans Brat!
Had some time this weekend to fix another thing in my list; this very creatively repaired tie rod boot. and replaced it with a new boot as well as a new tie rod end as the old one was pretty much done for. slowly but surely moving along... Lately most of my time has been filled up with the fiasco of rebuilding my brother's '97 Altima engine (my first shot at a rebuild), and it's taking FOREVER! I can't wait till it's done and I have more time for my little Brat

proportioning valve + rear disk swap (WTB: valve)
Well I now have a PV in my posession (thx to TomRHere). It's on my list to do the swap, so I'll let everyone know how it goes. Also had another question: The valve is obviously off a used car and quite rusty. Is there a way to tell if the innards are still working or not? Otherwise, I'll just install it and see what happens

New Orleans Brat!
Rust prevention continued! Since I brought my brat back to Chicago, I noticed some rust starting to form on the rocker panels already, so I sanded them down to the metal and gave them two coats of rustoleum undercoating. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out! Hopefully this was a good choice, but only time will tell... My trusty angle grinder that I used to get the paint off: old rust and paint sanded down to bare metal: The final product (the black streak marks are not paint, but tar from a recent road trip, they'll go eventually too): I still have a lot more paint work to do on the car. Future body plans include: - welding up the wheel wells where there are some nasty holes - fix up the bottom of the doors, which are getting pretty rusty (not sure how yet, any tips are welcome!) - whole new paint job (haven't decided on the color yet)
