  1. (Optimum coolant flow)=(zero turbulence)=(boundary layer)= (no convection cooling) I will point out that cooling really is not an important aspect of 1/4 mile racing. Its been a while since I paid much attention, but a few years ago the Top Fuel guys were going with solid blocks... no water cooling at all! A subie run long enough to stage and run a 1/4 mile probably wouldn't need water circulation at all.
  2. Ummm, maybe relieve obstructions, but smoothing a surface meant to transfer heat to a fluid is counterproductive. Polishing will reduce heat transfer.
  3. Can't tell you about the compatability issue, but... Are you sure that you don't have just a PCV issue? More likely that than sudden oily blow-by. Is your power still good?
  4. Monstaru, unless they moved Spokane since last year, I will be passing right through... Going out I-90 before dropping south to I-80-ish. Moosens '73 is near Ellensburg, so makes sense... Trip is a "Go"! Just made my e-payment for my '90 Legacy sedan (*hears groans of minor disappointment*). Yeah, its a long way to go for a '90 Legacy, but YaTaHey. The destination isn't as important as the journey.
  5. No, but... ... Static pressure, or at a particular speed or speeds? (Diaphram clutches increase pressure with increasing RPMs.)
  6. It's far more than I will accept. I'm not looking to make money off of this, just to make my back-haul less silly (and my wife says, "more affordable") and help out a few people along the way. I should have my PA deal e-finalized in a few hours. Also, looking to borrow brother-in-law's Explorer for the trip... 4WD sounds like a better idea than RWD. And where he is right now, they don't get much snow. So, get ready to make your shopping lists and your local transportation plans. Shipping should cost pennies on the dollar, so take advantage of my lunacy and moosens enabling.
  7. Sorry, I haven't learned how to manage it yet. I made some room.
  8. I need to make a trip to Portland area to get some stuff that I asked about a while ago, including stuff from mudrat. (Hope you all haven't got tired of waiting for me to get down there.) So, anything that makes it to Portland, or maybe even as far south as Eugene, can get included. Well, sorry I got cut off while typing earlier, but I will tell you what it isn't: It isn't an 88 XT... cause I just brought that one home. Non-turbo (yet ), MPFI, spider intake, PB 5-speed, $200. PO was told by PHusband that HG was blown, but me thinks it is just a very plugged radiator. Drove home just fine with heater blasting.
  9. My '58 Triumph was wet-sleeve. (Kind of cheating, though, since the engine was developed from a diesel engine.) You didn't need anything fancy to pull its sleeves; in fact you had to be careful when the head was off that you didn't turn the crank and unseat the sleeves. Made big bore kits easy; they just sold you new sleeves with the pistons.
  10. I wish that the reality matched the imagining. I should leave you in suspense, but that seems cruel. So, I am getting
  11. I believe that ScoobyWagon has a loose EA81T 3AT and axles that he could look at, assuming he is around.
  12. I'd say $7000. Our '87 got backed over, crunched the hood and the top of the fenders... estimate was $2300!!! InsCo totalled, paid us $1100. As the others have said, the important part was your family is OK.
  13. "Given enough time, money, effort... and a big hammer... , anything will fit." My '90 has one. But you are looking at a lot of work to do a factory-style swap. Engine, intake system, forward exhaust system, front cross-member, wiring harness, ECU, possibly fuel pump. Did I miss anything? If you had a crunched donor car it would be practical. Otherwise, might be better to look for an already turbo'd Leone/Loyale. My $0.02
  14. Pretty sure all of the EA81Ts were automatics. That would make them 23-spline, correct?
  15. Is this figure missing a number? Might sound like nitpicking, but these are "specs".
  16. Thanks, MilesFox. I have not planned my route yet, and it will be subject to weather and pickup/delivery points. (And avoiding toll roads and their delays would certainly be OK with me.) When the SERIOUS planning starts I am definitely going to ask for local advice!!! BTW, the trip is just about certain. I just have to do the e-paperwork for my $200 car, receive my new dolly straps courtesy of Coloradosubarules (a million thanks!), and keep an eye on weather reports for Jan 8th and after. Any locals who want to set up a pickup/delivery point along my probable route are certainly welcome to do so. I know a couple folk on the West Coast were interested in East Coast stuff (LSDs, windshields, et al) but shipping looked like a killer. This might be an option for them.
  17. With my maxi-van I could... but it would have to crushed up some to fit in the back. Are you talking long-haul, like from a coast, or just several hundred miles away?
  18. Not sure about the EA81T, but on the EA82Ts the test connector is a pair of single wires with green connectors that live under an interior trim panel below the steering column. I have never figured out where the "idle switch" is, but had been getting the impression it only existed on SPFI. Sorry, no help at all here. :-\
  19. Plenty of room for several sets of wheels... several engines, trannies, windshields... at least 8 feet of cargo room in Aerostar, or 11 feet and 2000+lbs of spare GVW if I take my maxi-van. I hate running empty, so if I do this I would just as soon have a load.
  20. Another little trick to removing bolts on pulleys/flywheels/lugnuts is to run the rachet/breaker bar across the center point of the pulley/blah, instead of outwards away from the center. Outwards adds to the tendency for the pulley to turn, while pointing inwards tends to reduce it. And anybody who has a spare engine to practice on can't be dumb.
  21. Looks like a problem with HC, not CO2. Tune-up stuff, might consider a new O2 sensor. Just my guess, though.
  22. My '90 Loyale is MFPI and turbo'd. But, this is prob an SPFI... automatic??? My rec is normal tuneup stuff like the others have said: Ignition parts (especially plugs), filters, PCV. Might think about O2 sensor... how's the gas mileage? My minority opinion is that intake mods and exhaust mods are unlikely to get you much if anything... probably not enough bang for the buck with the exhaust; unless yours is in need of replacing, then why not? I do not run intake mods (yet), and have not tested them back to back against stock on strip or dyno, so my opinion is suspect. BUT... mods of this nature have traditionally been done because it makes the car "feel" faster. More noise and fury makes you feel more powerful. Modified cams are a 2-edged sword, because they typically take something away from smooth idle and low-speed performance to give you some top end... but you really need to go to better valve springs and lighter spring retainers to get full benefit.
  23. Ummmm... Anybody else want to raise a Red Flag on this? It would give me pause to think *if* this shop did all four of those HG jobs...
  24. It looks *really* likely that I will be driving from WA to CT and back around the second week in January. Call me crazy (... pause ... ) but the plan is to tow a car from here to CT, probably along I-80, drop off the car and pick up a car in PA and tow it back to WA. Dead of Winter. Northern Route. RWD van. Towing. Shipping Opportunity: I will be driving solo and towing, so my van will have plenty of room and spare GVW. If anybody was wanting to buy anything bulky, heavy, or otherwise impractical to ship but it was on the wrong coast, this might be a way of making the purchase more practical. I will be doing a proper post when I know for sure if this is happening for sure. Hopefully, I will get to meet several members along the way, maybe even able to bum a piece of unfrozen floor on which to catch a few zzzzs. So consider this as a "heads up". I may be coming through. So lock your doors. Hide your women folk... forget that, too old... hide your Subies! TTFN! (Ta Ta For Now!) Pat
