Ram Performance Engines
NorthWet replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. This also implies a rather broad torque curve, with 129ft-lbs of torque at HP peak, 92% of T-peak. -
Carbed EA82 getting hot, thoughts?
NorthWet replied to Subarutex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would consider the fan a possibility, and also the t-stat. After adding coolant, is it still climbing to near-red and dropping? Does the oil-pressure gauge peg if you just turn on your ignition? If so, sounds like a shorted wire, probably at the sender unit. Check the sender terminal and clean it and the wire conector. -

Oh, I totally understand how it got into her car with the TC still on. What I was wondering was why it was still on when they CARRIED it into the SMALL apartment? I guess it must be the blush of youth that didn't mind carrying another 30-40 unnecessary pounds... up stairs, maybe? Man, where were young ladies like Connie when I was younger? But then again, if I had married a girl like her we would be arguing over kitchen table space for his and hers engines!!! Nice score, Connie. Nice works, Moosens! Pat:) -
Quattro San lives! (Updated as of 11/2/2004)
NorthWet replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, this can be done. It has been done for at least 40 years in cars. It has drawbacks and compromises as compared with EFI, which is why most use EFI. There was a recent (December?) thread on this. The thing that would discourage me the most is the possiblity of a backfire, especially with a draw-through application where there is a lot of pressurized combustable mixture sitting under your hood. -
I'm more familiar with the Older Gens than the Legacy, and although I did some searching I didn't find any references to my problem. I am looking (long-distance) at buying a 90 Legacy AWD automatic that the owner claims has a leaking transmission seal caused by improper towing. So far, all I have gotten is that the mechanic told him that the "main seal" was blown, and the owner says that it will drive if you keep adding ATF, but it leaks out quickly. I am trying to determine from the owner where the fluid is dripping from, front or rear, but this may take a while. Long-distance via email... Anyway, IF this is the seal on the tail-housing, what is the likelyhood that this car would be drivable if I removed the driveshaft, plugged the tail housing, and inserted the FWD fuse?

Got amps? GM Alternators! (pics and part#'s added)

I'm seriously thinking about it... just ran out of spare alternators. -
Starter size, weight and rotation

Are you looking for a starter for use on a Subaru engine, possibly for aircraft/hovercraft use? -
Ram Performance Engines
NorthWet replied to ausubaru92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You know the way to horsepower is to spin the engine to higher RPMs while keeping the torque curve from sagging. What RPM does the quoted HP-peak occur at? I have heard aero-people talk about 8-9k RPM... do you want to run this fast on the street, with resultant narrow powerband? I might... -
BooHoo!! 298,583 miles and she's started to Smoke!
NorthWet replied to skibaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My first thought was PCV, also. Valve seals are unlikely, as they tend to suck oil under idle/high-vacuum and puff smoke for a couple seconds when you next step on the gas. The rings would do that if an oil-ring let go, but you would see that whenever you got on the throttle, not just near WOT. Don't give up on it yet. -
Starter size, weight and rotation

All of the ones that I have seen are the same: High speed motors with gear reduction to the output. Maybe something in the older EA81 and/or EA71 engines. -
HELP - 1st time pulling motor
NorthWet replied to phishy75's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The mount bolts are slightly splayed, and tend to grab the crossmember even when everything is disconnected. I helped to pull an engine/tranny combo a couple weeks ago where there was nothing holding the combo except the undone motor mounts... lifted the whole car. We ended up putting a jack under the tranny and tilting it up (it had been drooping a little) as far as it would go, and then things popped loose with a little horsing around. Keep at it, but don't do anything dangerous. Pat -

First thing, take off the torque converter... why did you move it with it on??? :-\ -
ACK!!! So you returned the car with something of yours? Can't remember what is what ... were the alloys yours, or the new tires, or both? Any way, sorry for your loss. Pat
-
Gee, how lame!!! I'm glad that I have never done that... 3 months ago, for 3 days...

Sorry about that. I am an inveterate packrat and hate deleting messages with info that i might need someday. Anyway, does that mean that you found a new car??? I haven't looked at threads yet, just saw that my inbox was full and corrected it. TTFN! Pat

Thanks, DIS. Pretty much what I thought, but couldn't believe that people would go through the trouble and expense to put in what I could only think of as a kludge. Better fuel management sounds much better and cheaper than arbitrarily dumping extra fuel and an escalating rate.

Ignorance Alert!: Every time people talk about RRFPRs I get a little confused. It seems to me that either a) my manual is wrong, I misunderstand what the manual says, or c) RRFPRs are a "band-aid" that would better be solved by other means. So, would someone please tell me how they are different from an EA82T's pressure regulator, or why they are needed.

Sounds like you are describing a secondary (spark) distribution problem. Did you replace the distributer cap and rotor? How about plugs? And how strong was that spark that you saw? *edit sorry, I am tired and missed that you just said that the cap, rotor and plugs are new. Still worth checking, especially the plugs that can get wasted in just a few bad miles. end edit*

ea81t manual conversion on RHD

Now that you mention it, the one EA81T that I worked on (stripped) didn't have that mount bolt... -
Tall Tires and Speedometer Calibaration
NorthWet replied to NorthWet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hhhhmmmm... another young person, maybe? Uneducated in the ways of old marrieds??? You don't educate long-time wives, you say, "Yes, Dear." Not really a prob making something, but I would want to do it right and use real cable fittings. Computers, electronics and mechanics are right up my alley.
