  1. I've heard talk of putting an EA82 and tranny into a Justy. Can't remember if it was just talk. Make it heavier, but nice torque increase.
  2. Ok, I am sleep depraved, and sometimes a little dim, but "AWD" and bushbutton 5sp seem contradicatory. I have a FT4WD EA82T... ... but it is an automatic. I was given a FT4WD, difflock, LSD... ... but someone else took it first. Maybe not too rare. Except mine don't have pimp interiors. TTFN! Pat
  3. I have both stick and MIG welders, but my "slippery slope" is somewhat high-traction: I don't have that flowing, small-muscle control needed to do those nice overlapping circles. That and I am easily distracted... not good to be welding sheet metal and then start daydreaming about some neat idea... Holy Hole!!!
  4. I was wrong before on which models had an external voltage regulator and which have an internal VR, but I believe that yours is an EA81 which should have an VR external to the alternator. Either way, yes, there is a VR that could go bad.
  5. Standard reason for oil smoke occuring after high intake vacuum conditions is valve stem/guide issues. If the smoke occurred under acceleration (and not just transition to acceleration) it usually means rings.
  6. Yep, the 3AT (at least the version I've seen), only has an intake screen. *IF* the internal end got damaged, hopefully the metal debris will settle out and get excluded by the screen.
  7. Which end? The inside-the-tranny end, which might mean goobered internal splines, or at least metal shavings everywhere? Sorry. Not making you feel better, am I? A thought: Throwing away 3ATs seems to be a popular pastime with some members. (USMB Mantra: "Do a manual tranny conversion.") Now, this must mean that at any given moment there are 3ATs kicking around that the owners don't want. Maybe you should ask if there are any available? If yours is truly toast, might be worth a shot.
  8. UMMMM... is this supposed to be a recipe for how to steam-cook the interior? Seems to me that with it totally sealed what you might end up with is jungle conditions of heat and humidity. Or do you figure that "tight as you can" still leaves you with plenty of leaks? I like to leave the windows down a crack...
  9. I see one everytime I walk outside. I say a 4-door Justy the other day. Subiemech85 told me that they existed (and sent me a pic), but had never seen one before. Looked kind of nice.
  10. Bad connector/connection? Maybe at engine harness, maybe at ECU? Is it throwing EGO sensor code? (IIRC, that is not on the engine harness.)
  11. I'm not a respected mycologist, nor do I play one on TV, but... I don't think that most molds indigenous to wet car interiors are particularly nasty. Use PPE during cleaning for sure, but don't need to get too obsessive about the cleaning. A dry car interior is pretty much a dead zone for the fungal kingdom. I believe that a good cleaning with soapy water, and a little bleach, followed by a really good drying will take care of things. Had a little experience... Have fun! Pat
  12. Weee have wayssss... Naw, another member posted ad info for a car matching the description, so I assumed that this was not a coincidence. BTW, I got a load of EA81 stuff, too. Nothing exotic, but good selection of spares.
  13. I'd like the whole car. Help me make a deal with him and I can probably get you the parts you might want from my donor car. I just emailed him. Pat
  14. Sorry, Archemitis, didn't mean to sound like I was getting on your case (or anyone else's). Being socially inept, I probably excercized even worse judgement as a teen then anyone here. REALLY couldn't tell me anything and I was never wrong. Sports cars (well, in 60's and 70's terms ) and 750CC motorcycles. Used to get my grins listening to the exhaust collector on my Honda 750 "sing" as it grazed the pavement. Cut a rubber traffic-counter hose on an onramp that way once upon a time. I got busted for "exhibition of speed" once while doing a steady 25 mph. Oh, and IMHO, driving is everybody's responsibility, as it produces risks for everybody. Again, not trying to be a more-than-usual PITA, just offering a chance to reflect. Back a little closer to topic... When I was a teen I thought that what I had was superior to what someone else had. Hand a 16 yr-old a jet-engined skateboard like a WRX, put him in the driver's seat with keys, and you think that he is going to give any respect to anyone driving anything? He/she doesn't have the perspective and maturity (usually) to do that. His opinion of your car shouldn't matter to anyone except him. And he almost certainly will not give homage to what got his car to where it is today. "Gratitude is an attribute of dogs" V.I. Lenin Cheers!
  15. HHMMMM... I was taught that you have to earn respect. Zapar, I agree with you about responsibility and setting an example. I have a 20 yr-old daughter and 16 yr-old son. I would like to believe that both of them think for themselves enough to know that just because an adult does it doesn't make street racing any less of a "fool's game". But they also watch the behavior of more mature people to get a clue for their expected conduct. Can end up being a mixed message. Two other things... if someone told me that my daughter was "hot" (I assume sexually, not thermally or doing well in her current endeavor) I would certainly tell them that their comment was inappropriate, both being objectifying and being directed at her father. Second, Zapar, 16-yr old? I hope that your listed "Age" is not correct.
  16. Might just be the clutch bearing. Not such a big deal. It's been 30 years since I did A/C repair, so I can't remember if you have to depressurize system to change the clutch. And it's too dark for me to read the manual (2:30am local).
  17. This has been SOP for many car makers and gasket manufacturers for decades, at least until the "torque-to-yield" head bolts came about. It is generally referred to as a retorque. In fact it was so common that some gasket maufacturers (e.g. FelPro?) started advertising their new HGs as NOT needing to be retorqued. The new "torque to yield" head bolts don't require retorquing, and in fact shouldn't ever be retorqued/reused after the first torque down. It is also why HG sets for the engines that use them are so pricey, as they include a new set of bolts. My advice is to follow the gasket manufacturer's instructions, whatever they are.
  18. Does it look like this? (Sorry for the poor pic quality... camera challenged today. )
  19. I remember seeing a couple of posts about site (Subaru's?) Where you could pay to download FSM sections. (I am not referring to the Finley site.) I have searched and can't find the references. Anybody have the right URL? Or is my memory just another sleep depraved (sic) hallucination?
  20. I'm not sure that I dound the one that I was looking for, but found a couple that are relevant. Basic idea is that when you install the torque converter onto the shaft (multiple sets of splines) that you have to rotate it (the tc) until you hear a certain number of clicks. Warning: You may not like what they say about damage. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20458&highlight=converter+turning and http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9941&highlight=splines+turning
  21. Thanks for the info. Yes, the price seems high. The electronics needed for it are pretty simple, maybe $20-30 in parts max. I know that it is limited market/ limited prduction, but when I can get a 2GHz computer for less its price is a little hard to understand. :-\
  22. All_talk is almost certainly right. You don't want to pull the torque converter still bolted to the flex-plate ("flywheel") if you can avoid it, and you don't reinstall the engine that way. You will almost certainly need to pull the engine again (or at least WAY forward) in order to properly seat the torque converter onto its shafts. There was a recent thread about this that mentioned how to do this and what to listen/feel for to know that it seated on its shafts properly. If you can't find it, repost here and I will try to hunt it down... unless someone beats me to it.
  23. My Luddite phase ended 'round about the same time as BOC's anthem. Been a convert a long time now. "Let me tell YOU about MY EFI..." (That was a convert joke. Sorry if it was a little weak.)
