  1. The way to make a VC fail is mismatched rotational speed(which causes them to overheat) , it is a slow quiet death. They do not ever just fail.
  2. Gross on a 97 it is just trying to figure out which wires uunder the dash to connect and ground to read codes, though I prefer the older method myself (no wire hunting).
  3. Just an FYI this is the bad part http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f89/center-diffs-how-replace-them-46979/ "replacing Viscous Coupling Differential" (that was done just for searchability) What sucks is that sunaru seems to have changed their on line ordering system from dealers, so little info there now.
  4. Well there are two definitions of tranny flush. One is just flushing out all the fluid via a machine. The other is a chemical, which should never be used with ANY liquid in the car, unless it has a toilet.
  5. Can you find another dealer, he is high by about 600 dollars ish. The VC is sealed so no additive would help. and remember TRANSMISSION SHOPS ARE EVIL!
  6. 1- No, as it used for pulling a load or adding breaking fdorce down hill. 2- no you will lug the engine. The torque converter multiplies torque at a 2:1 ratio ( I think it is actually higher) and needs to be unlocked to multiply power for hills. Keep the car in D3 for hilly areas. Last one, change the tranny fluid and lest see if that goes away.
  7. A majority of cars use ATF fluid (I did not say all) for PS fluid. The seal is worn, time for a replacement eack. The boot is just to protect the rack end and its seal, not anything else
  8. Remove the battery cable for 5 minutes to erase the TCU memory then drive. Let it learn about you. There are also a number of shall we say illusions that one can add to a tranny to make it feel good. Subarus shift hard so there is most likley nothing wrong.
  9. So then neweer to you is an auto from the late 1970's or newer http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm http://www.edmunds.com/car-technology/automatic-transmissions-what-makes-them-work.html Then after that in another 15 uyears we can explain (and by then we will all know) how manu-matics/multiple clutch manuals work and which tend to blow themselves up the quickest. I am taking bets on that last one BTW.
  10. That is the lock up torque converter unlocking. BTW on hills you may be btter to not use cruise as they tend to drop down too many gears and hold it for too long then is needed. Also in a really hilly section where you notice the car hunting for a gear leave it in D3 and everyone will be happy.
  11. Soobys seem to be picky about that. Tht is how Justy CVT's got destroyed.
  12. You cant cure an asthmatic that has a hole in their lung. Right now with a vacume hose off anything is possible. Give us miles, transmission and what has been done over the last 6 months or so.
  13. Never anything supid, just Data Points.. And yes it has been done before.
  14. it is a 1976 Subaru GF (?) Google. Don't discount ads as they can information in them as well. Between those two I don't know what else you are looking for or it does not exist on the net.
  15. I still do not beleive he needed all those parts. Like I said i have not seen this "common" issue anywhere else on any board. What is done is done.
  16. Any CEL ? Since there is a neutral the Inhibitor switch is working. Ot sounds like the internal pawl that selects the valves inside the transmission are broken. This may have a broken valve body or other damage. I would replace it with one from the same model car,
  17. Check to make sure you did not break or disconnect any wires under the car by accident. Check engine and tranny grounds. How did the car run before hand. The tranny light flashing means there is an electrical fault from the last time the car operated (in your case all the time). There is a way to pull codes and I bet you have a bunch of them. Search here on how to do it
  18. Take it back and let him find it? Plug the line for now and see if that helps. Are you saying it is disconnected from the cruise or you can not find the mating connection in the maze of vacume lines. There also should be a vacume map under the hood that should help. If you lay the hose down where it is, it will hold its shape and should point you towards where it should be connected.
  19. Howdy Basically a transmission shifts by a balance. It is Gov pressure vs throttle pressure(vac modulator or cable). The throttle pressure tells the transmission how hard the car is working. The gov tells the transmission how fast the car is moving. It sounds like the gov may not be working as that tells the car how fast it is going and that it needs to shift. Does it shift when manually shifting?
  20. Soooooo dont like my links? If not google.
  21. They are on ebay, under 100 with shipping. I found a loose outer tierod end on mine. Simple fix (loose at the thread) but disturbing.
