i dont see the haynes reference. ALso look here http://www.cars101.com/subaru/subaru_maintenance.html#90-99maintenance no mention of a fuel injector cleaning. Kand N filter, there have been extensive studies showing that they are worse at filtering air then OE or other brands. http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm Also there are electronics down stream that can be damaged by allowing dirt or oil get in the air, depending upon the year of the car (you can do a search on that too. If filters were inpentrable, they wouldnt be filters, they would be plugs. Filters allow things through at the micron level. But hey im just in the automotive industry at the engineering end, what do i know. nipper

Fuel is still cleaner then it was 10 years ago. Fuel has to meet a standard set by the auto manufacturers. The Auto Manufacturers were about to start a program certifying brands of gasoline over others as cleaner. Well let me tell you, that put the fear of God into the fuel companies (moreso the tiny off brand piss water). The MFG were seeing to much warrenty work on injectors from the midwest and southwest. Cleaning an injector that has no running issues really is a waste of money. AT 77K there was noting wrong with your injectors. A 4mpg increase can be done at your right foot easily. Also soobies arent really broken in till 100K ALso it could be from using winter air in summer tires (hehehehe) nipper

AHA! Blinky light usually means the duty C solenoid is dead. Depending for how long the clutches can be fried too. The AWD clutches are designed to tolerate slip to a point (like going through turns). But if they are always slipping all the time, they will over heat and fuse together. Also the duty C solenoid dumps peressure from the clutch pack. IF it cant do that the clutches are applied at full force, again with the same results. i wouldnt change the tranny fluid till the blinky light is resolved, as it may just be a waste of money. nipper

Backfire?

Either way get the oil changed. The dealership will inspect your car to find other problems, just say thank you and let us know what they say if they find anything. nipper -
anti shudder (shudder).... DO a flush. Shuddering going straight ahead is indicative of mis matched tires. Check your tires, make sure they are all inflated the same. make sure they are the same age and size. Put the FWD fuse in and see if it goes away. If it goes away then do a flush. If it doesnt we may have to trouble shoot it a bit deeper. NEVER use anything that is going to de-gum the transmission (or any part of the driveline for that matter). That gum is helping to hold the seals together. nipper

Ping II
nipper replied to a095208's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Because the ping is coming from the plug body, not from poor gas, which is what the sensor is designed to deal with. The knock sensor cannot adjust for a mechanical cause of ping, as much as it may try. I have posted many times on here links expaling spark plug heat ranges. A cooler plug retains less heat, so it reduces and can cure ping. a hotter plug retains heat. Also ping from the spark plugs comes from the spark plug body retaining heat. It is considered harmless (except to the plug), but annoying. nipper -

Knock sensor. Backfires can hurt your Catalytic converter so sooner then later. nipper -
a third possability (which i had on an 88) is that one of the cooling fan motors are bad. I had that and it drove me nuts. I discovered it by accident whaen i changed the clogged raditor, that one of the bearings were shot. The fans were drawing alot of current, not enough to blow a fuse, but enough to make the dash go wacky. nipper

Yes that would be enough to cook the AWD clutches but what it sounds like to me is you have one of two possabilites. One is that your duty C solenoid is dead. If the solenoid cant energize you will always have a 50/50 split (unless the clutches are fried). Check to see if you are missing or have a burned out bulb in the dash where the tranny temp light is. That is usually flashing a code if the solenoid is dead. Check for loose electrical connections under the car by the tranny and under the hood on the pass side. My gut tells me from the mismatched tires, you have a fried AWD unit. nipper
