A fellow ought-1 Forester driver! Welcome to the board, amigo. Don't forget to put pics of your ride on the photo gallery. Got any questions about your ride? I've driven my Forester for a year now, so I might be able to answer quite a few of them. -

Soob drivers have finally been given the opportunity to play with the big boys. -
Wasn't that guy on this board?

Damn shame. I feel her pain because my dad's '69 VW was totaled back in October (with me behind the wheel, although it wasn't my fault). -
Very nice, amigo. I need to do some of that myself.

Where in Big D are you? I need to check out your stuff.

That's badass, dude. You use Movie Maker? I used to use iMovie, but now I use Final Cut Express. Once I get the chance to film some of my off-road escapades, I'll chop them up and post them.

I checked with the parts rep at Subaru of Dallas, and they have skid plates available for the Impreza. However, the company that makes the skid plates can customize one for the Forester. Or, if you're good with metal work, obtain some thick steel, make the measurements, take an acetylene torch or plasma cutter to it, and voila!

Welcome to the board, man. You'll find a treasure trove of knowledge on this board. Put up some pics of your Soob on the picture gallery so we can all see. -
Having an extra switch for the parking lights is kinda dumb. But, it sorta makes sense for me because in my Forester, everything electrical gets cut off when I turn off the key, so if you're stranded and you can't start the car, you just flip those on whenever you can't turn the main light switch on.

First of all, where in Texas are you moving to? Now, to answer your questions. 1. Subaru motors are just fine as long as you stay under the GAWR, although you might drive a little slower and probably put a dent in your gas mileage. 2. You could probably expect up to 28 on the highway and around 20 in the city. 3. What road noise? Well, since I listen to the stereo pretty loud, I don't notice. 4. With the Subaru A/C, you could turn the cabin into a refrigerator compared to the Texas heat. 5. Retint not necessary. Just get a good pair of shades because Texas isn't all sun. We do have overcast days, you know. 6. Whenever we do get some rain, the streets will be slick. The AWD works wonders. If you're doing a lot of heavy-terrain driving, the AWD is awesome.

As long as you keep it high enough, you won't have to worry. If you're talking about rain/snow, here's an idea. Ghetto-rig some type of valve that will allow you to switch between the stock intake and the snorkel. That way, you won't have to worry about rain getting sucked into and/or collecting in the snorkel, and you'll have more power because the snorkel will cut back on some of the power.

Well, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is about to get its annual one day of snow, and of course, I would really like some info on how to safely drive (or wheel) in the white stuff. Since this is a rare opportunity for anyone living in the state of Texas, any of the DFW natives on this board (and I know there are a few) would surely be helped out by some of this info.

Yeah, but as far as I know, that's only in automatic transmission vehicles. There's a fuse under the hood that you pull out that disengages the AWD system and makes it front-wheel drive. However, this isn't something you can turn on and off at will. You would only do this in an emergency situation. For example, if you need to change a tire, but the spare is smaller, you'd put a regular sized tire on the front and the spare on the back, then pull the AWD fuse so it's just FWD. That way, the mismatched tires won't mess up the drivetrain.

If the car has a manual t-case, you can put the t-case in neutral, then put the gearbox in neutral, totally disconnecting the engine from the complete drivetrain. That's the only way you can tow a 4WD vehicle. But, since AWD is completely automatic and requires no operator intervention, there's really no way to completely disconnect the drivetrain from the transmission, I wouldn't try it. Subaru does make pretty heavy emphasis on this point in the owner's manual. Either way, most tow trucks sent out are flatbets, so that shouldn't be a problem.
