POLL: "Overhaulin" pick a paint scheme
BeefaRu replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks! and here it is: :cool:The "reveal"::cool: #4 trim divides paint, without wheel flares. Photoshop version, and the actual paint job. Managed to get similar shot to orig. The spot on drivers door is a flash, since original had it, I did same for reveal shot. Also for those who didn't know, the plan to go exact stock blue was shelved in favor of modern paint hopefully close to orig. 2006 Jaguar blue was closest. Modern paint is pretty high tech, ingredients are within 1/10 of a gram, the pearls are awesome and can have multiple colors to them. This paint has a mild purple pearl/cast at different angles in the daylight. There's a hint of it in this photo. That was an unexpected bonus. I'm really happy with the color. Original paint w/ photoshopped silver The final reveal This was a lot of fun fellow USMBers. Thanks for everything, and heres is the link to the overhaulin thread in case you haven't been there. A full reveal photo album will be posted to that thread today. -
POLL: "Overhaulin" pick a paint scheme
BeefaRu replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hey gang, had to resurrect this thread. The original links changed and I couldn't edit, so I'm posting the pictures of all the paint ideas for fun and because I can finally post the reveal paint job. The big winner in the poll was paint scheme #5. The final chosen paint scheme was #4 trim divides, without wheel flares. The next post has #4 again, and #4 with the actual paint job. #4 ended up being final choice, mostly for classy look, but also because it was much more doable. The wagon was tall for low ceiling booth. We had to remove tires and set on discs to paint top, then had to jack up to paint bottom. Any scheme with silver over trim would've been tough to do. I tell you though, even on the day the decision had to be made, I was really torn between #5 and #4, and even thought mountains would be hard to live without. Here they are one more time: 1 Stock paint only 2 2006 outback style 3 Trim divides paint 4 Trim divides, without wheel flares 5 Over the trim 6 #2 with mountains 7 and by popular demand.....#5 with mountains. -
Shawn...low out of the 3.9.....this just keeps better & better!! I need to take my car in next week. Mechanic usually has 4.11's hanging around. I'll see if there's anything available for us. I agree with keeping # of people down, and not to sound like a slacker, but I need to knuckle down on a book someone is ready to put 10grand down on for publishing...if I'd just write it. So I thought I'd get the "lab rat" tranny, let the scientists get to work, and just poke my head in every now & then for an update. Of course I can & am willing to do more if you need me to, but I'm happy to stay out of the way & help in any way I can. --E

Last up, but definitely not least. Jerry Demoss!! Jerry's 86 front wheel hatch Good to have you there Jerry. Looking forward to the transmission lab. --E -
Hey gang, Who wants to open a transmission lab to drop an RX full time dual range from 3.7 to 4.11? Solo scientist or lab group... whoever is interested, but I think its about time we figured this out. I believe I can get my hands on one right here in town as early as monday or tuesday. We need the legacy parts and you guys probably know better than I, but I believe 90-92 may have the best chance of fitting. We can just forge ahead with parts, or.....ShawnW if you can access the builder through your channels to find out, that would help immensely. Through my channels, I can probably access one of his kids and they may know something. Chime in guys and let me know. Eric

Website of the Beefaru 88 wagon is DONE!
BeefaRu replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the compliments. Building the website was a HUGE trip down memory lane. I got all nostalgic. Funny how a car can do that to you when its been with you through so much.....10 years, 20 states, 180k miles. Daeron - no clue where he's from or the "frogs hair" thing....but pretty funny though huh DrKrazy - Thanks! and thanks for egging me on to get the story out and actually show off the car a little. The wagon was always everything I needed so just drove it gigged a lot and never though much about that stuff. Barracuda - Yea.... for the longest time I only had $ to do minimum maintenance, but its felt great to do what I've done the last couple years. I agree the Beefaru definitely deserves it. I've put close to or around 180,000 miles on it myself, I'll get a hitch shot next time its on a lift and yes I got new glass. As far as driveshaft......I have no clue. 1 piece sure makes a lot of sense to me and wish it would work. Shawn.....what I do know is the engine/tranny didn't go in straight. The tranny is off center in the driveshaft "hump" in the wagon by an inch or two. Three different straight driveshafts were installed. All with the same results: they'd run quiet without vibrations for a while, then within a year or so they'd start vibrating and there'd be a moan at highway speeds easily heard if you did a quick coast with clutch in and gas off. With each driveshaft vibrations got so bad something had to be done. Same thing happened with another conversion car with a one piece, and the builder said a two piece solved that. So..... we went two piece and now with it finally straight this is the only time I haven't had that moan (yet) or excessive vibration (yet). Makes me wonder why all stock driveshafts were and still are 2 piece if they could be 1 piece. If anyone can enlighten me I'm all ears. Thanks for the good words. BTW....has anyone found the picture of the girl pulling her top up? -
Painting the hatch, need some suggestions....
BeefaRu replied to 75subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Have you ever owned a black car? I haven't, but I've seen plenty of dirty ones, with wavy bodies, with swirly clear coat because the black can really reveal that...... and I've listened to some body people talk about working the metal on a car that's going to be black. It takes a lot more body/sanding work to make a car that's going to be black look good when its painted black. Black is not only very high maintenance, but black exaggerates and highlights every single tiny nuance of body that is not perfectly straight or perfectly curved. And as mentioned before if the clearcoat isn't perfect, it's pretty easy to see with black paint. To me, the white flatters the car a great deal. Keep your eye out and study every black car you see.....you might re-think the black thing. Or you can spend a ton of money and get it to look decent.....like this. Otherwise, it just ends up looking cheap. --E -

Got a few vids of that, but was a little far back (minimum mud distance) and video doesn't show how rowdy it is for some reason. Keith.......check your email. --E -
You've got some guts following those monsters around! You know, I passed through Des Moines just a couple weeks ago coming back home from working in Minnesota. Would've been cool to see your rig, and you could've seen mine. I saw ElCaminoKurt's rig that morning. My favorite thing about subes is how light they are compared to regular offroad rigs. --E

Holy sheeeit.......what kind of gearbox does this guy have??! I thought I had OK low end for a Subaru, but this crawler's gearing is off the charts. http://s44.photobucket.com/albums/f36/401ton/Castana%202006/?action=view¤t=2006_0924Castana0021.flv&refPage=20&imgAnch=imgAnch27 --E

So far, its only DrKrazy Keith & I posting any media. Looking forward to other pix/vids. Those cellphone vids should be really easy to download with a file size of 100k. Here's the largest video. 19.2 meg. I need to update my crunching program to OSX. It makes videos smaller for downloads. In this vid, DrKrazy Keith gets on it. I like the beginning where he launches and bounces up the steep. Something tells me his gas foot feels very comfortable resting flat on the floorpan. DrKrazy's highly modded 88 sedan ROMP Next up, and last video will be Jerry's red 86 hatch. --E -
tranny lube type question!
BeefaRu replied to stevo151617's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's more info about BG synchroshift from a quick google. There are two types synchroshift I and synchroshift II. From what I've read GM and Pennzoil products are very similar and BG is a different level of quality. Caboobaru....thanks for the "compliment" ha ha.http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1471052 http://www.3si.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-254540.html -
tranny lube type question!
BeefaRu replied to stevo151617's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
BG synchroshift II - full synthetic. Pretty expensive, but that's what I've been using in my tranny for a couple years, and seems to work great for protection and shifting ease. --E -

Video #2. This video is the definition of old school whoop rump roast. It's over 9 meg so get a snack as it downloads. Tom'sBrats: 1980 all stock single range brat I love where Tom gets on it as he approaches the hill and that brat LEAPS forward instantly.....tires throwing up dirt and grass, and it just tears up the hill. A little backside air on the way down....hell the whole thing is pretty cool. --E -

All right guys, I have about 4 videos that look pretty decent. They're "old school" with only video no sound. I won't put em up all at once, so here's the first one. Its a 5.2 meg video in .avi format. If your browser doesn't play it in a new window try saving as and seeing if you have a player on your computer that'll open & play it. ShawnW's 86 dual range hatch Since Shawn is a big reason why the forum even exists, he's first up. --E edit: by the way, I have a pretty good camcorder & pro software. Maybe next time we can get some happenin' footage for the archives. -

Here's the shots I had. Still uploading as I type. Beefarus OldSchool pix I'll select a few choice videos when I get a chance. I don't think my cheap camera has audio on the video so they'll be "old school" silent movies. --E -

Kurt, good to meet you too. Your picture turned out better than mine. I ended up driving all the way to Denver that day. 14 hours that day ob about 4.5 hours sleep the night before. Looong drive. Wanted to get home. I really liked the baja would've been nice to have more time to check it out. Take care, I'll drop a note if I'm in the area again. --E
