All: My 1995 Subaru EJ22 is equipped with a hill holder function. I am just getting ready to hook everything back up after clutch swap and lots of PM. How does the hill holder work? It appears that it would engage the brakes every time I push the clutch in...since it will pull on the cable. Does this feature cause problems I should be aware of? Tom

I did pull and reseal the oil pump. I filled the oil filter with oil when I put it on. I will pull the plugs as you advised. Is it obvious which connector goes to the fuel injectors? Should I leave the fuse in? I did replace the fuel filter and lines also. I will put everything back on the motor. I would rather get a clean start. Thanks for your help. Tom

All: So the EJ22 has landed back in my 95 Legacy! Mating that transmission and engine is back up is more prayer and luck than science... I replaced the clutch and most all the seals and gaskets / sensors / filters. My question is how much should I button the engine back up before trying to start it? Should I just hook up electrical and clutch or the full deal? Hoping all goes well and there are no suprises. Any thoughts...lessons learned appreciated. Tom

All: Doing some last minute cleaning while I am waiting for final parts shipment. I am replacing clutch / seals on my 1995 Legacy Wagon / EJ22. I bought this car second hand so not sure of its history. In cleaning under the intake manifold today I found the following bracket. It was oil caked...so it has been there awhile. Any idea location / function? Thanks, Tom

All: Happy Labor Day! 1995 Subaru Legacy L / 186K / EJ22E Working my way down to the oil pump / cam seals removing items as I go. Have a few questions/problems and could use everyones help. 1) Crankshaft / Camshaft Alignment Marks. If you look at the attached pics when I set everything and removed the timing belts. I have the Camshaft alignment marks correct....but the Crankshaft alignment mark was off. (Guy I purchased it from had done the timing belt. Question: Should I leave it this way...or move the crank so the alignment mark is at the 12 position (vs the 3pm position in the pic). I guess this did not cause a problem since it is a non-interference motor? 2) I have removed the timing belt / crank shaft / but cannot break the bolts on the Camshaft pulleys free. Any good ideas out there? Thanks as always!!! Tom

1995 Subaru Legacy L Wagon / Ej22 / 186K So I have amassed a small mountain of parts for my Subaru. I am doing a clutch swap / seals / oil separator plate / and general PM on this vehicle I just purchased. I am ready to hit it hard this labor day weekend...BUT.... I ordered the OEM oil sep plate and the OEM 6 bolts for the oil sep plate (801506040) which I picked up of a schematic of the motor. Seems that when Subaru changed to the metal sep plate they now use (800406140) for the bolts. (The plastic plate used countersunk screws) I ordered the wrong ones..... I am going to check the local Subaru dealer tomorrow....but I am quite sure they won't have them in stock. Anyone out there have the specifics of length, thread, pitch of these bolts. I could try and source them locally. I also don't have a picture of the 800406140 to see what they look like. Any ideas would be great...otherwise I will spent my weekend looking at the engine on the hoist. Thanks for any and all ideas. Tom

1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon ej22 Got the flywheel off. Looks like I have the plastic oil separator plate. Week be swapping for metal. Thoughts on the rear main seal. Pic attached. Should I swap it out? Board seems to dissuade people from removing...but it looks like it is leaking around bottom. Thanks Tom

1995 Subaru Legacy L Wagon - MT / EJ22 / 186K So pulled the clutch today and found a suprise...attached. I now know what that noise was. I am thinking that the throwout bearing caused the damage. The throwout bearing looks good. But was missing a clutch sleeve clip / spring release clip / weight release lever as show in the diagram. It was super loose front to back / side to side when I pulled it. Plan to replace bearing / clips / springs / fork (has a stress crack). Just want to make sure I have covered all the bases. Thanks again! Tom

I am in the middle of a swap on my 95 wagon bought for my son. I pulled the engine...much easier. Engine is out and now just getting to clutch. I would pull it and check for oil leaks. These engine have a tendency of leaking around oil seperator plate...which is behind flywheel. Search for that and you will find a bunch of threads. Good luck....for both of us. Let me know how I can help. Tom

All: So I got the motor pulled yesterday!!! Thanks to everyone for all the help and great threads. Now the adventure begins. Clutch, oil sep plate, cam seals all on the list. I cannot find any thread on how to replace the drivers side rear cam seal. Anyone have any advice? Part numbers? 1995 Subaru Legacy L. EJ22. Not sure if leaking...or just spray from the valve cover leak...but planning to replace as many seals as I can while I have the motor out. Thanks, Tom

Been digging in the forum for a list of things to check/change with engine out. Anyone have good list. 1995 EJ22 has oil leaks...but seems like to head gasket issues...can't tell till it is out. With 186K should I swap the head gasket before it needs it? Just trying to plan my attack. -
Purchase a 95 legacy for my son for 300 bucks. Was told the clutch is gone. I cannot engage the gears (with the engine running), but can with the engine shutoff. Did make some funky sounds when I was messing with it...so not sure if it was partially in gear. We plan to pull the engine and replace the clutch and lots of other seals, etc. Is there any way you guys could think of to test the transmission to make sure it is ok? I really don't want to bolt the engine back up to find out that the gearbox is rubbish. My thoughts: 1) Changing the gearbox oil. This is good PM anyway but would be a good way to look for any signs of metal/evil in the oil. 2) Place car on jackstands once engine is removed...place in gear and rotate tires. Make sure input shaft is turning and no evil sounds are occuring. 3) Prayer Let me know if you have any other ideas / or if my ideas are not sound. Thanks in advance. Tom

All: I am the proud new owner of a 1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon L. EJ22. Getting ready to pull the motor to replace the clutch and fix the wobble in the shifter. Any advice? While the motor is out does anyone have a list of things to change? I do have some oil leaks so I know the oil separator is on my list. In addition I see full gasket sets on eBay. Are those any good or do folks have a recommendation of which gaskets to use. Thanks in advance. Tom

Hello: Just picked up a 1995 Legacy Wagon for 300 bucks. Needs a clutch, some seals, and lots of love. 180k on the clock. Made my decision based on the great information here on the board. Looking forward to all your help...and words of encouragement as a complete my first motor pull. Tom
