brighter lights?
Yeah, I put (sylvania) Silverstars in the lights I got. BIG difference. Good idea for the bimmer lights, but there's not too many BMW's in the wrecking yards here in rural Iowa!! Speaking of which....Where in Central Iowa you at, subiemech? I'm in Coon Rapids. (bout an hour west of Des Moines.)

seat upgrade for gen 1
Are you looking to stay Subaru? I removed the seat tracks in mine and drilled & bolted them to a 90 Topaz seat. Very comfy & fits fine.

1st Gen Brat Lift
Would all these mods theoretically work for a gen1 wagon as well?

brighter lights?
Those look like the very conversions I ended up getting (thru JC Whitney) very happy with the result.

site down (NEW PICS ARE UP)
You're welcome to use pics of eyesore, if you like. Probably not too many camo'd gen1 wagons with twin .50's in the grill out there. http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo65

more starter issues!

gen1 EA71 to EA81
another thread got me to wondering: What is necessary to do an ea81- D/R conversion in a 78 wagon? (I'm sure this has been covered before guys, but I looked in the USRM, & did a search, but came up empty on this subject. If the info is readily available somewhere, please steer me in the right direction.) Otherwise.... I know an '81 Brat crossmember is required, but lacking one, would this be a custom fab-able item? Will the old axles work, or will the ea81 axles fit? Will the ea71's rear diff work? Is this a huge project, or really not too hard? Just testing the waters. Won't be undertaking this project tomorrow, but would like to know if it is realistically worth attempting. Sorry if this is a total newbie-rump roast question. Feel free to smack me for bringing it up if it's been answered to death.

more starter issues!
Thanks, Mick. I'll check the ground. However, being as the old batt was pretty weak, (had to jump it after the first starter install) I just bought a new battery thinking that was the problem now, what with the deep cold and all. It wasn't. And as such, I know the post connections are tight & clean. Hopefully, It's the ground, but I have a feeling I'm putting the other starter in tomorrow. (I'll disassemble & clean the one I remove.) Wish me luck, we need to pick up the X-mas tree in it this weekend!

1600 engine thoughts
It's an anemic motor compared to EA-81's, 82's etc. However, the 1600 in my 78 wagon is a hell of a trooper. More power is always nice, but I can't fault my little EA-71. She gives it her all each and every time, and has never let me down. If it ever gives up the ghost, I'll upgrade. Till then I see no real reason to.

more starter issues!
I tried that, ran a wire from the pos. Batt, to the little tab. (with car in neutral, & e braked) just brushed the tab & it does the same thing: nothing. C'mon! it started twice before! The Soob gods must be angry. Too cold now to do too much tearing apart anyway, though.

more starter issues!
AAARGH! I put the used starter in the Brat, and it worked great. Twice. Now, that one is doing the exact same thing. gives one single click, and won't take a direct batt to starter jump either. Is this a coincidence that this one crapped out the exact same way after working twice, or could something else be at work here? (killing the starters) Any thoughts are appreciated. I still have 1 untried used starter, but I'm hesitant to use it for fear that underlying issues are killing 'em. Help!

the Brat lives!
Yeah, I kept the old one, and Mick was kind enough to give me two used ones (Free!) so I have 2 spares. Haven't gotten around to tearing the bad one apart, and probably won't unless I need it, but I'm keeping it all the same.

the Brat lives!
Yup, knew I'd figure it out with you guys' help. USMB RULES!

starting issues
Cool! I'll take a look at it. Mick, I also shot you an E-mail to see if you had an extra starter I could buy. Never hurts to have a backup. At least the starters on Soobs are super easy to get at. Beats trying to pry the starter out from behind the header on my Fairmont! And of course, now that I have repairs to do, we're finally getting snow tonight. Oh well, guess I'll play in Eyesore instead.

starting issues
OK, tried a straight jump to see if that worked, and it didn't. Still get the single click. Bad solenoid or starter?

You mean run a wire from the batt to the tab via a pushbutton? Hmm, I could try that.

starting issues
Went out today to put the new tags on the 84 Brat, and drive it a little. (she sits most of the time.) And she wouldn't start. Turn the key, and I can hear a click from (i think) the starter. Car has power, I even swapped batteries just to be sure, and she does the same thing. Now, it has done this a couple of times before, but usually if I switch it on and off a couple of times, she'll decide to start. Not this time. Just one single click, not a machine gun clicking, from the starter. Tried whacking it with a BFH, no go. Ideas on my best course of action? Is this a solenoid? bad starter? Help please

artists out there on the board
I do a lot of art. B&W pencil, usually automotive in subject though I do a lot of sci-fi and Aliens (the movie) inspired stuff. My main theme is / are: Post Apocyliptic Landscapes. Cityscape ruins, etc. I don't have a scanner though, and even if I did, much of my work is too big. (like a Terminator based city ruins piece that's 3' x 2'.)

Submit pics here
http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo65/a0008_4a Assuming the Eyesore isn't too "out there". Not extreme action, but it is offroad, and I liked the color contrast.

I have seen the light!
No, they are not HID, but they are a very intense white. I had a 66 Chrysler Newport w/ a 383. great car! You should have no problem doing the conversion on it. The bulbs go into a hollow headligt unit, and that is a direct swap for the stock lights. The whole conversion took me about 3 minutes. And living in deepest darkest Iowa, where the deer and the skunk play (on the roads) The Silverstars were just what I needed.

I have seen the light!
Don't think you can get the H3 in a single filiment, (don't quote me) but a dual would work just fine......you'll just never make use of the extra filiment.
-
I have seen the light!
I just got 55w/60w bulbs. nothing radical like 80w/100w's They don't seem to draw any more power than the stock lamps did, just give way more light. Talk about cooking critters though, you should see the searchlight that results from running all 10 lights at once! (I illuminate road signs over 1/2 mile away!) 2 Silverstar headlights, 2 stock High beams, 4 55w driving lights, & 2 100w spotlights.

How would you fix a gas tank puncture?
JB Weld will not hold more than a week. As soon as the tank builds some good pressure, PoP! Out comes the plug. The soap trick does work, but it is a temporary / trail fix only. The soap plugs the hole and the gasoline does not dissolve soap the way water does, so the plug holds. No fancy chemical reaction, and a 2" gash is way more than the soap could handle. It is a handy tool to keep in the car though, just in case! ( I have found Ivory soap works best....)
