Well, got my headlight conversion the other day, (cheapest I could find, thru JC Whitney $38 plus shipping), and Sylvania Silverstar bulbs ($35 a pair. ouch!). Finaly had a chance to try them out tonight. WOW! What a difference! One of the best mods I have done yet. For those of you with Gen1 soobs (and their anemic lights), I highly reccomend this conversion. Soooo much better than the old lights. Bright, clear, white light. And the best part? The new bulbs (9003's / H4's) are a dual filiment bulb. So the lows are nice and bright, and they become Highs also. So I have 4 high beams. (including the still stock inner headlights.) Next step is to wire the inner headlights to accept a low beam application, and install another set, so I will have 4 lows, and 4 highs. Woo Hoo!

Might be interested. Got any pics? You say they came from Toys, are these a Toyota part, or aftermarket that happened to both be in Tercels?

2 dead soobs in my yard now
eyesore replied to Meeky Moose's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so put the wagon motor in the hatch! Or throw a little JB weld on the drain hole. (what's it matter if you're scrapping it?) -
Just ordered a 5 3/4 round headlight conversion kit from JC Whitney, (hey, I'm cheap) and am going to go with Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. (so it's okay if the housings are cheap) I'll let you all know how the swap goes & the results. Sure will be nice to see the road at night! Can't wait.

Muffler Upgrade Suggestions??
eyesore replied to SubaRube's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mine is where the stock resonator was, (removed) and it goes about 2 feet and dumps out before the rear wheel. Sounds kinda ricey, but also has kind of a porsche flat 4 sound. I like it. (and I hate that fart pipe sound.) -

Info. on Scorpion 4x140 14"x6" Wheels
eyesore replied to Dante's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dante, It's all good. I was just clarifying the extent of my knowledge. As I don't actually have firsthand experience, but going on what I know from people who have done lots of importing. -

My knowledge comes from the Mad Max enthuseist community. I know several people who regularly import Aussie cars to the states, and when they bring a car over, they load that sucker up. parts in the trunk, backseat, anywhere and everywhere. Because there is no price differential. You pay for the container, how much goes in is a non issue. Worst case scenario, If a bunch of you decide to go with a bulk purchase (Sunraysias, or scorpions or whatever) I can ask around and see if I can get them on the boat with a car coming over. Still have to distribute them across the states, but it might save some $$. (wheather it would be enough savings to justify the hassle is another matter....) -

What's so special about LSD? not the drug
eyesore replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What about us poor Gen1 owners? was/is there an LSD for us? Seeing as I only have the single range, every little bit helps. -
Engine color? Requests wanted.
eyesore replied to JonOfScio's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What color is the car? Personally I'd go with a Hemi orange / Chevy orange for the block, Aluminum for the heads, and orange on the Valve covers. Matching orange, or black on the air cleaner. Choice #2: Rally blue (or ford engine blue) everything except the heads. Choice #3: Body color everything except the Valve Covers. Get those chrome plated. Powdercoat the carb to match! -
1: Download DiVX 5.1 (obviously) When I tried to open the .avi files, they kept trying to open in quicktime, which didn't work, so this is what I did & it worked great.... 2: right click on the file & choose "save target as", then save it to your desktop. 3: go to your desktop, open the DiVX player 4: drag & drop the downloaded file from the desktop into the open DiVX player 5: Movie starts right up, & plays beautifully. BTW, Great footage guys. Wish I had places like that to play in! Lucky %$@*'s!

If they ship by sea, they go into a container. wheather it's 5 wheels, or 5 dozen the price is the same. So you'd save a lot in shipping if you're doing a bulk purchase that way. ('course it takes a couple of months...) -
Anyone have Winterforce tires ?
eyesore replied to nails24's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, just bought some a couple of weeks ago. The tread compound is soft, but I haven't had them long enough to judge wear. I do / have run a lot of gravel roads almost daily (with the odd 4 wheel drift / powerslide not uncommon) and have not noticed any chunking or appreciable wear. The tread pattern is pleasantly aggressive. No snow as yet, but they grip quit well in deep sand and mud. For the $33 dollar price I am very happy with them so far. The only caviat: I noticed quite a bit more tendancy for the car to squirrel around on these compared to my previous All Seasons, but I contribute that to the much softer compound. They are not scary or anything, and I adapted to the new handeling after a day or two. -
Cool. no tangent, I'm intrested in all the info I can get. I was hoping to do the same Hi-Lo setup. Did you have to use a new wiring harness to go from the 3 prong to the H4 plug, or did you just do a splice job? Thanks again for the info!!

I'd be willing to go that route, if necessary. (lookin that way) Do you recall, ballpark, what the conversion cost? What company did he get them from?
-
They are the small rounds. (I assume the 5 3/4 's) The parts stores had top of the line lights in the big rounds (7"?) for 2 headlight systems, (high & low combined) small squares, Big squares, small rectangles.....everything but small rounds for a 4 light set up. Went to Sylvania, Phillips, Wagner websites...nothing available. Just wondering if any of you Gen1 owners had found anything better than standard halogens? Those yellow fogs are cool. McBrat had some in his gen1 Brat for awhile, and they looked really cool, but i'm looking for something to upgrade my low beams. Anybody.....

Somebody give me a huge budget and a welder......PLEASE!! Future mods planned: Both rear (behind rear doors) windows covered in sheet steel, with jerry cans in brackets bolted to them, bigger / beefier rear bumper and custom road warrior worthy front roo bar, Have a couple of small size ammo cans to be welded on the body...somewhere, (haven't decided where yet) and when $ permits, I want a gen1 lift from Mudrat (unless he wants to donate one to such a worthy cause?) Maybe somewhere down the road an ea81 (ooh ooh or an ej22) transplant, but the old ea71 just runs so well, it seems a shame to yank it. Is there an LSD that will fit a gen1? (one of those then...) Have been kinda contemplating a mock up minigun/turret for the roof....

I have, apparently, been on a snipe hunt lately. Trying to find a high intensity / xenon / cool blue / something bright replacement headlights for a gen1 4 headlight system. It gets really really dark out here in rural Iowa, and my standard halogen headlights don't cut it by a long shot. Apparently, Phillips, Sylvania, Wagner, nobody makes a decent headlight in a small round! Have any of you gus found anything that puts out decent light? (sure, I often just run all my auxiliary lights, but technically, that's illegal.) Help!
-
Thanks, Shawn. I knew there were some more out there, but I couldn't remember who took / posted them. I'll have some more current pics of my own before too long also.
-
After everyone I knew passed on riding in the car, (sitting in the back without a passenger seat in front of them just freaked them out.) I broke down and installed a second front seat. The space where the rear seat lived now holds my tools/parts bin. Still a 2 seater, just a little more conventional now.

Thanks, Moosens! Wait till I get the current pics up, she looks even meaner now!

Pics of the old girl are now available for your amusement in the photo albums area. Please note that these are not current photos, but about 2 years old. Car is now painted in Camo, and wears Iowa plates: EYESORE. Current photos to come in the next month or so. Enjoy!! http://usmb.net/gallery/albuo65

Headlight oddity & "Why I Love Subaru's!"
eyesore replied to the_bard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My '80 chevy Citation did that too. All my friends knew it, as we used to use the keys for "stuff" while driving. A buddy went to pull them out while going down the freeway, and accidentally shut the car off, at 70mph! luckily it was on a straighaway, and I was able to get it restarted before we hit the retaining wall.
