If an Aussie vehicle is 25yrs old or more, it can legally be imported to the U.S. Shipping typically runs 4-5 K. Make the owner an offer he can't refuse! (include pic of wife, any arms/legs to be traded.)

There was some fairly non-comittal talk of another Mid West (read Iowa) gathering, I recall October being mentioned? Anybody interested in doing this again? (not necessairily in Oct.) These things seem to take a bit of time to properly organize, so I thought I'd throw the idea out there to get the ball rolling. Start with possible dates/ timeframes that would work for people. (even the more didstant future) Any time is good for me.......

Anyone tried the Khumo Venture MT's?
eyesore replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
looks like the tread pattern on a BFG M/T. At $67, I'd say get 'em. -
I think my slider works OK, (it always did anyway) I could move between Hot / cold no problem. She'll still make heat, but it's sickly sweet antifreeze tainted heat, and is really nasty on the windshield. I turned the slider to "cold" 3 years ago, and have never moved it since. I assumed it was a bad core. Going on my description, what do you all think?

If you had seen the interior, you'd know the answer. So, in theory, a gen2 heater core can be installed in a gen1? (don't care if it's ugly, I need to be warm! And I have an angle grinder.) Pics, maybe? (always want more pics of the Subuggy anyway.)
-
These things are like hen's teeth too. S-wings quoted me $900.00 to replace. (something like 8 hours labor, and they had to send the old core off to be rebuilt...none just lying around.) On a $500 car, I said "no thanks". If yours works, count your blessings!!

Dave, I went to walmart and got a $15 ceramic "car heater". It's worthless for "heat", but positioned on the dash, it does defrost an area about 2 feet around. Better than nothing.... (and lots of Anti-fog wipes.)

Wow!! a whole 1 psi of boost! Why, that's like having a mouse fart down your intake. I bet you really get your $300.00 worth with that! (edit)

Wondering... Is it possible, or at all practical, to install a heater core from a gen2 (84) Brat into a gen1 (78) wagon? I know this is not a direct swap, but can it be jerry-rigged to be functional? If not, Does anyone have a working gen1 heater core fore sale cheap? This will be the third winter without heat, and I'm really not looking foreward to it. Thanks

And get some little padlocks instead of pins. :madder: Don't you love funny people.

The page comes up, but you can't actually click on anything? Me too. Looks like technical difficulties. It was working the other day. Give it time.....

Here's how you achive that: get going fast as she'll go on the highway, (75) let a big rig pass you, quickly jump behind him. Shot my Gen-1 wagon to 85!! it was like a shot of N2O! I could actually feel, by the seat of my pants, when I was loosing the draft. With a little work, I could let the truck suck me along at about 1/4 throttle.

no thermostat pros and cons!
eyesore replied to tompalushock's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This should be a bad thing. The water always circulates, and therefore never gets held in the radiator to be cooled down. A thermostat is always a good idea. That being said, I have been running without one for 2 years now with no ill effects. The temp never goes above halfway, even on really hot, humid summer days. She also barely registers any temp at all in the winter, (never reaches "operating temp") I know this is not ideal, but I haven't had a heater core for a couple of years, so it doesent really bother me. (besides, both t-stat housing bolts broke off in the intake, and it's being held on with a hose clamp & permatex, so I won't touch it if I don't have to.) basically "do as I say, not as I do." I'd run the T-stat. -
Not to seem all anal, but shouldn't this thread be in older gen, not the marketplace? Sorry if my newbie self is out of line bringing it up....

I, too have a camo'd gen 1 wagon. (my avatar shows it when it was black) So that's two como'd 70's 4x4's right there. how common can that be? I have seen at least 10-15 running around Denver in the last year or two...Know of at least two gen-1's here in the Des Moines area. (and Iowa is not at all nice to Subarus) I'm totaly in agreement with the General. there are tons of gen-1's still going strong out there. Now, as for ones that look like the one in your pic? your #'s are probably more realistic.

87 turbo wagon dash mod (w/pict)
eyesore replied to Skip's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fed into the intake? Seems to me breathing/burning water laced ATF would be a bad thing for the motor....harpua's setup sounds "safer" to me, but what do I know? -
Those bumpers came out great. I like!

87 turbo wagon dash mod (w/pict)
eyesore replied to Skip's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
now that's a dash to be proud of!!! I especially like the Da Bomb feature. A little info on how that functions, perhaps? (I'd like to steal the idea if you don't mind.) On the T- bar handle issue, Had 'em on 2 of my vehicles and loved 'em. I wanted a pistol grip on my current Subie, (a gen 1 wagon) so I scavenged a shifter handle from an auto trans XT. (very comfortable!) I pretend the thumb button fires the (fake) .50cal machine guns in the grille. -
So what's the verdict on Eyesore having a chance? Sounds like not much....:-\ Oh, well. Glad you had fun! Looking foreward to the pics.

Just make sure you're not what they want. You: "kill him" Them: "but this is an imbezzlement case..." You "kill him anyway!" Them: "next juror please." At least you only lose Monday. -
I have had this idea bouncing around for a long time, If I ever get any money to my name, I may try it.... Want to stick a shaft driven 1600cc Harley V-twin in a gen-1 soobie, powering the rear wheels. Less weight than the Sub mill, more horses, more torque, and that awesome Harley sound. Should be relatively do-able. what do you think? As for the 351 in an XT, sounds like a hell of a lot of fab work, but I like it.

colorado unite!!!!
eyesore replied to offroadsubaruguy's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Ahhh, good old Rampart range! there are enough trails in there to keep you busy all day (and most are very easy) how I wish I was back there to join you all. Have Fun!!! -
Wish I could. there is no real way to fit 15's on a '78 wagon. (or even 14's for that matter) Even if I cut out the front wheelwells, the rears are a problem. (the rear doors are right there.) Now, if I were to lift it....Ah Ha! no lift kits for a gen 1 wagon! And no fab skills at my house. Sigh, Guess it's 13" snows for me. :boohoo:

I have searched and searched for a really aggressive 13" tire. I have gone so far as to search for tires in Australia & Europe to no avail. NOBODY in the world, near as I can tell, makes a 13" mud tire, so soobme is correct: search out an aggressive snow. The most aggressive tire for the best price I have found so far is actually the Sears Wintermaster. 185-80-13's are about $30 a tire. Fairly decent lug depth & spacing (void) I also reccomend siping, seems kindof gimmicky, but the sipes do give you added "biting" edges, and I noticed a definate improvement in wet/icy contitions with it done. My rockcrawling buddy sipes his Swampers, and swears by it. My .02
