  1. True!! I must admit the idea is very tempting so I am guessing the same amount of mods would be needed for a brat as for this hatch? (making space, changing piping ...)
  2. Thanks for the advice good news!! I just had a mechanic look at it today and in 2 min he knew exactly what was wrong ... believe it or not it was just the stupid mixture control solenoid and it was keeping everything WAY too rich ... could have been alot worse ... too bad I couldn't have scavenged one from the parts I got offa '84 brat turbo ... I have to say too that I have the most amazing boss!! he paid for the $40 diagnostic check with the company acct, and he wants to pay for the new solenoid
  3. check out that biodiesel site I posted earlier in this thread ... you can make it yourself and the cost is about $ 0.50 - $ 0.60 per gallon to make it!! it's made from 3 ingrediants ... lye, methanol and vegitable oil these different ingrediants are used at differant parts of the refining process to make a superior diesel to what you buy at the pump
  4. I'm thinking the same thing ... wouldn't it just bolt in if you swapped out the ea81 harness/engine/etc and dropped in a SPFI ea82? hell how about a MPFI ea82?
  5. Thanks for all the info!! I'm beginning to think I should just find an Isuzu Pup with a 2.2 NA diesel in the near future, and wait on doing a transplant to my brat ... once I do that, the brat will become strictly a play toy and I can lift it and all that good stuff But, eventually, I plan on making all my own biodiesel and transplanting a diesel into the brat and NEVER paying for pump gas again
  6. all fixed now ... it was just my $#%@#!! fuel mixture control solenoid!! too bad I didn't realize that B4 I tore the carb apart:rolleyes: oh well ... at least I have a clean carb now and brand new fuel filters
  7. hmmmmm hard to choose, but maybe I can offer an idea for a compromise? Instead of a map of the entire state of WA, just have a blown-up map-quest style mini-map with shelton shown in relation to I-5 (this would be in the back-round) and then put your stylized WCSS7 logo on top, with the info for date and location centered below the logo, and have the old subie symbol on the left, and the new subie symbol on the right  Man I wish I knew how to put that picture together myself here .. hehe I hope my idea is easy enough for you to visualize
  8. Ok, I replaced the second fuel filter, and have played with the mixture screw ... at first that had NO effect at all ... it would even keep running with the screw completely turned in!! So I next pulled the pluggs and noticed something else kinda strange. All the pluggs had some black soot (running rich) but the back 2 cylinders were a nice brown color on the electrode, the rest around the elctrode contact points black, but the the area where the spark actually travels, it was nice and brown ... so I put in new pluggs, and it's a little better, still a rough idle, but it doesn't die now and putting my hand over the tail pipe doesn't seem to indicate that the flow is restricted, I guess next I will check the timming and maybe replace disty cap, plug wires and caps but I am a little baffled at the rough idle. I mean, even if it had been an issue of fuel flow, the carb is gonna run a while on what is in the bowl, so that would only be a problem while it took it's time re-filling the bowl once it got low. Oh well, gonna do some work tomarrow to make up for taking today to work on the carb ... if anyone has more ideas, like other things to check or a better way to test to see if the cat is plugged lemme know **** PS **** the main reason I asked this question was that I know of annother owner of a brat here in town ... they were very surprised that my brat would even do 70 and thought that I must have one that was souped-up? well anyhow, thanks in advance for any aditional info! night all ...
  9. Ok ... I replaced the rear fuel filter, and thought maybe I discovered something ... it appeared that it was on back-wards ... and yet it still wants to have the mixture screw waaaay out ... anyone know what kind of mixture screw it is? air or gas?
  10. thanks u2! I really thought that was correct but just needed to get it confirmed ... I have rebuilt alot of motorcycle carbs, but all these hoses make this kind of carb sorta intimidating I got it all back together now ... taking a break to eat and rest then finish up and see how she purrs! I need to visit the auto store again tonight to get new belts and the second fuel filter that's near the rear passenger side tire and then I will see if I get some decient mileage now I have been getting bearly 20 mpg and my poor brat struggles to go more than 75 on flat road ... I hope my cat isn't plugged too
  11. I just got the info on the float adjustment, but now I'd like to see an exploded view of the carb ... anyone know of a good place on the web?
  12. *****up-date***** LOL!!!! of all the stupid things to miss ... I just needed a new mixture controll solenoid .. for now I have the old one taped in place hope Subaru doesn't want $9,000 for a new one ********************************************************** well, I got a Chilton, so you already know half of my problem o.O I'm trying to figure out where the adjustment hight is for the float level on my EA-81 carb from my '85 brat ... the book says the hight should be 0.435-0.492 in. (11.5-12.5 mm) and the diagram shows what looks like inverting the fload assembly, and making the first measurment from the choke chamber to the top of the float, but I want to make sure this is right ... the written instructions refer to "the air horn?!" I have no idea what that is and the diagram also seems to show some other measurement with the float fully extended down (with the valve fully opened) just wana make sure I do this right before I put this all back together ... also ... the sight glass for the float bowl ... where should the fuel level be judging from the sight glass? the middle?
  13. yep! GWC was an amazingly humble man also ... he refused a 6 figure salary (remember this is in the late 40's early 50's!!!) to work full time with ford developing alternitive fuels such as diesel fuel from soy beans, he didn't want to leave the college where he taught and also the work-shops he did for farmers to teach them to rotate their crops so that the soil wouldn't be ruined by just raising cotton all the time. I think his salary at the time from the college was room, board and $1900 a year!!!! On annother note, look at the kewl biodiesel site I found: http://www.metaefficient.com/metaefficient/archives/biodiesel/
  14. yep, I am in the process of doing a thorough cleaning of the carb, and when I put on the new fuel filter, my idle jumped 500 rpm, so I think that speaks for it's self I don't really know how to trouble-shoot my cat however, any suggestions? I will be putting new plugs in too after I look at the old ones ... if they are a nice color then I might just save the new pluggs for later and see what else it might need. I have heard alot about "Seafoam" but I am very skeptical that simply running a cleaner through my fuel and oil will be as good of a cleaning as tearing down the carb, boiling it out and adjusting the mixture.
  15. I have a '85 Subaru Brat, and I was curious if it's just me, or if this is normal performance .... (I know this is subjective, but I will try to describe it as well as possible) I make a 90 mile commute every day and I regularly drive at 70 - 75 on the highway, however it seems that it takes forever to get from 60 - 70 and I can't always get it to do 75 depending on the grade of the road. I have difficulty passing and have to carry my speed to do any passing at all ... in other words, I have to plan ahead like 3 seconds and start accelerating then to pass a slow driver and I need WAY more room and time that I ever did with my '88 Justy! I know that the brat is a bit heavier than even the wagons of the same vintage, but I just don't think I am getting the power I should ... also I get only 20 miles to the gallon ... the info I have says I should be getting 25 in town, and 29 on the highway. I am cleaning (boiling and adjusting) the carb tonight and I know this will help as the engine has been stumbling a bit lately and occasionally won't idle ... I just replanced the fuel filter and this helped some, but I am still not sure what kind of performance to expect ... maybe when this car was made it was designed with the 55 mph speed limit of the time in mind and thus isn't really expected to be driven for extended periods at this speed?
  16. tell me more about this engine! I have no experiance with Isuzus
  17. wow thanks for all the new info! I am DEFINATELY going to look into the diesel Toyota engines .... and as far as using french-fry oil, my understanding is that the heating of the fryer oil is something of a refining process (crude yes, but effective) and that once it is no longer usefull for frying, and is collected into holding tanks, it needs no more than a good filtering. Years ago there was a trucker that simply had a pump and tank and after filtering out the impurities, put it right into his tank as fuel. George Washington Carver actually started the idea of making diesel fuel from soybean oil ... he and Henry Ford worked making some alternitive fuels tword the end or shortly after WWII ... I forget which ... there was a great special on about GWC on the history channel. It's also my understanding that if you want to get fryer oil diesel fuel on the cheap, you can simply pump it and place it in large holding tanks and let the solids settle to the bottom over time, much like way you purify water with detention tanks/ponds and then you will have much less problem filtering
  18. hmmmmmmmmm I need that "German for Dummies" book (it's a 2005 car right?) I thiink that would be a NICE diesel engine, but I don't think I could afford even an engine out of a wreck of that car ... I think building one from a VW rabbit to get a little more power would be more possible for me ... I do have one question tho, I have seen on this site ppl talking about wanting a non-turbo engine for use off-road ... what's wrong with using a turbo engine off road? (I know nothing about turbos ... )
  19. Great  thx for the info Lukas, I have seen some diesel rabbits for sale, maybe I will be able to come across an engine from one
  20. hmmmmm I need to get the specifics about these VW engines ... wonder if they came with a turbo model?
  21. Well, point taken, but what would you say to be able to drive your favorite subie with fuel you made from nothing more than the fryer oil you got from the local fast food resturant? I'm mostly hoping that the rumor of the diesel EA-81 is true, but if not, it wouldn't be a challenge (or in this forum) unless it wasn't a subie engine
  22. Here's an engine that might do the trick, might be prohibitivly expensive, but, over time I suppose it would pay for it's self ... Look at the B3.3-80 ... it's a 4 cyl that they advertise as being compact and perfect for use in smaller vehicles ... http://www.cumminsnorthwest.com/Cummins/Bus.asp
  23. hmmmmmmmmmmmI love the sound of a diesel EA-81!! hope that rumor turns out to be true I feel your pain about forgeting to ask her name ... I have done the same thing b4 :-\
  24. hmmm so then you would have a VolksWagon (people's wagon) powered roo, a Volksaru? and if your going to goto that trouble, is that the best diesel engine available that would stuff into a Subi? I'd like to have something more along the lines of THIS diesel!! http://www-5.jeep.com/vehsuite/VehicleCompare.jsp?vehicle=LIBERTY&pid=u&adid=u&rid=u look-up the: "2.8L 4 Cylinder Turbo Diesel engine that produces 160 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and a stout 295 pounds-feet of torque at 1,800 rpm" now if you could get that to fit I would love that kinda power from old french fry oil!!
  25. good point, and I wouldn't have any of the messages such as "Ossama open up and say "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" very big, but I'm putting the "ARMY" "AIRFORCE" etc, etc, to make it look a little more like a missle and maybe some black length-wise stripes but here in Missoula I have seen even more "Support the Troops" ribbons than even in Tacoma Washington, and that city has both a major army and airforce base, so other than a few college students who won't be my customers anyway, I don't think many will be turned off by it:banana:
