DOH!! looks like some Jeepers have already tried these (Super Sport HT ... apparently made by Kelly) tires and weren't terribly impressed with anything but the price http://jeeps-offroad.com/showthread.php?t=1651

Yep, you guessed it, I just sacrificed one P205/75 R14 Cooper Discoverer STT (you know the ones they don't make in a 14" anymore ) to the Ft. Missoula Tank Proving Grounds ... next time I will just drive in the deep rut! I didn't see that concrete footer of the sign pole with the jagged edges RIGHT where I drove my driver's side ft tire now I am looking for advice ... go cheap or get the toughest tire out there in a 14"?? I have decided to go ahead and trim out the fenders since I have alot of rust on the pass side in the rear, so lay it on me!! What's the baddest toughest tire (with in reason still worried about $$$) that still wears reasonably with mostly highway miles? I'm thinking some TSL's, but I don't know how many miles to expect to get out of these ... and I'm interested in a reasonably aggressive mudder ... no Liberators for me :-p If I go cheap I am thinking of doing the Walmart Mudders ... Supersport HT's ... these are only in 15" however, so I will have to convert to 15" pugs ... anyone tried these out yet? P.S. .... in my infinte wisdom, my spare is a Walmart cheapy, so now I have a All Season radial mixed in with my discoverers ... should I switch the miss-matched tire out to the rear for now? also, what are the chances of patching the side wall from the inside and using a tube on the current tire (for off-road use only ... not on the road)

great thread!! I did a quick search on this thread and came up empty, so plz bear with me my weber seems to work ok, but it has always hesitated ... someone just pointed out to me that the venturi's were loose ... secondary was loose, and the primary even more so!! I was told there should be some sort of O-ring between the venturi and the barrel of the carb ... I tried to find some but it's a very tight fit in there, and once it's in place the gap is such that the O-ring that bearly fit going in is loose once the venturi is seated in the barrel. Do I need a new set of venturi's or os there something I am missing? ****UP-DATE**** I noticed just today (sunday) that gas is puking out around the area where the venturi meets the barrel wall of the carb ... anyway to fix this? I'm toying with the idea of somehow using RTV to seal it .. just not sure how to do that and keep it from plugging the tube

WOOT!!! Looks like enough 'wheelers have responded to the poll to make it 75% to our favor ... and I agree, there isn't really a perfect option, but as long as the Forest Circus "closes" old roads with kelly humps followed by ditches, few large 4x4's will travel them as much as smaller ones like jeeps and subie's will ... I am looking forward to all the exsisting roads and trails that the FC closed being required to be open again by court order!

DOH!! just my luck :-p ... all but the articulation pics would post ... thx a TON for posting them 75subie! if I tried to up-load some it there isn't enough coffee here to keep me awake till they would be done ... btw I have a real skid-plate now ... no more of that stupid 90 DEG bent tubes like in the pic ... I broke down and had it done professionally ... it's worth the piece of mind (and saving my oil pan & sending unit)

Thx! ... mine is the car with the shark teeth ... I haven't seen the pic yet, but I am told that there is my car with a caption saying "how would you like to have this in your rear view mirror!" ... it's green with a red deer guard
-
Ahh, well mine is the green one with the teeth Sorry to be replying so late, sharing a dial-up connection sucks! Thanks again for your help making the lift/5 speed/LSD a reality Hope you got that info on the cooper's still in exsistance ... Heya 75subie, did you get my pics in email?
-
Sorry to have taken so long to post this John, but here you go!!! I came to Oregon to get my 3" lift, 5-speed and LSD rearend installed, and let me tell you this is one BUSY guy! He actually had to take time off from work to make this happen, and I haven't had less than daily complements on my brat since! Pics will follow soon ... I think John has some already, I have very little computer time these days, but I will do my best to post some ... BTW .... anyone seen the October issue of Subiesport? I have been told they have my brat pictured somewhere in it from WCSS7 ... can't find that mag here in Hamilton Montana, but that's no big surprise Anyhow .... THANKS AGAIN JOHN!!! :burnout:

Kewl!! thx for the info guys, I was thinking the same thing But I got annother deal going now for a EJ22!! '91 Legacy in the JY, 159K miles, 5 speed, has the license plate current as of june '04, and it was hit in the rear driver's side ... I can get the engine and all the electric for $150!!!! I have annother friend who needs a daily driver, so I think I will pass on the '91 turbo to him (if it turns out that the tranny isn't too bad ) I think the non-turbo might be better for my brat, anyway
-
I don't know any more about my friend's can other than the title says, and I am curious if this 2.2 turbo wouldn't be a good engine to retro fit into my '85 brat ... he says after everything warms up it runs and drives fine, but the auto trany won't shift out of first while it is cold. Any idea how good of a deal couls this be? Is the problem with the trany common and easily fixed?

Calling all Bitterrooters!!
FlyB0y replied to FlyB0y's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
OK, I KNOW your out there Larry ... now just type a reply or something?!?! (I know your used to chisling letters into tablets of stone but this IS the information age ... no!! keep that chisle away from the keyboard!!! ) I guess I will have to go round up my local 'roo owners and get them on the board ... oh well -
I have been thinking of how I might mount my over-sized spare on my brat, and I saw a truck the other day with the spare right on top of the roll bar, wondering if anyone else has tried this? I am afraid it would get caught on branches and such too much. Any comments?
-
OK, so I am a transplant! :-p I still live down the root ... any other 'rooters here? I am thinking of starting a off-road subaru club in the Missoula/Stevensville/Hamilton area ... we could call it "Bitter Roo's"

I am leaning twords the spitfires too, but you need to see them on the vehicle ... any photo 'chopers have some spare time?

'82 Brat with the 3rd Eye (Cyclops) ... Rare?
FlyB0y replied to FlyB0y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Kewl, maybe I will have to make annother run to Oregon to "visit" my family then .... oh ya and maybe see my parents and brother too VERY tempting but untill I got my lift, I must say even that I will have to pass on for now ... I DID find a NICE '81 1st gen brat for 1700 tho ... going to look at it some time this week ... guy really doesn't want to sell it, but I hear he has some good spare engines I might be able to trade twords a lift -
am changing the belts (ac & alternator) on my friend's 86 wagon. It looks like the belt that is on the AC is too small, and the parts store just matched the belt numbers, so the new looks to be too small too. Other than the tentioner, is there anything else to loosen this belt?

'82 Brat with the 3rd Eye (Cyclops) ... Rare?
FlyB0y replied to FlyB0y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks guys, it's not that rare after all ... oh well, I can't afford $2k right now anyway ... need to get something for the "lift fund" so I can get my 27" coopers on -
I found one of these in montana, I am going to try and buy it if I can, he wanted $2500, and I talked him down to about $2000, but I am just wondering if it is worth that much more than a regular brat of this vintage or if it is worth alot more with the cyclops ... it's not as clean as mine, but the body is pretty straight, just a few dents and dings here and there, but it's a GL, has 180k miles and just needs the seats recovered and a little paint to make it sharp. It runs great has pleanty of power and nothing appears to be wrong with the drive train. What's it worth?

WOOOO HOOOO!!! What a blast!! I arrived mid-morning on saturday (would have been earlier if not for some bad directions from some locals ) I tried to make it by friday night, but it was just too much and had to sleep at a rest area :-p (more like park and TRY to sleep area) Once I got there it was great!! I almost wouldn't have gone on the off-road course at all, but I followed a group of you all that followed the lifted XT6 powered wagon about 6-7PM saturday and decided if other non-lifted subys could do it, so could I!! Once past the deep rutts at the beginning, the rest was just fun in the sun ... I accomplished all my goals, selling my carb & roll bar + my rear bumper which I hadn't planned on selling Was it Noah that asked me if I wanted my brat's pics taken going side-ways in the gravel pit through the water? If so, just lemme know and I wil pay ya what you need I also had a great time earlier showing off my brat and all my little mods (condensator made from a tea maker, etc.) and I don't remember the board name of the guy I sold the carb to, Bob was his name tho, he was the kewlest!! At the raffle he gave me his tickets shortly into it and I won a 1/2 price off a custom Mudrat roof rack!!! Thanks to everyone who helped put on the event, I don't remember all who I talked to, but you all made it great!! Sorry I had to leave unexpectedly soon after all the fun in the gravel pit started ... I got to see what happends when you have a "drum on board" and do 5' jumps in a AA lifted wagon then my brother calls in Oregon asking when I would be at his place, so I took a short-cut back to the road (thanks for the cheers BTW going between that tree and small hill on the way out) and didn't get a chance to really say good-bye, it was a BLAST!!! TTYAL- Dayn

Best exhaust system for a EA81 Brat
FlyB0y replied to FlyB0y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
kewl, Skip, I will have to see when I get mine made if I can just show the muffler guy some pics of yours and Jerry's systems to give him ideas .... I don't have the equipment or knowledge to make my own so I will use the guy in Missoula who has kept a friend of mine on his insurance even though he has had some serious problems. John has grand maul seizures and is having exploratory brain surgery to find their source. This is a very small local company that has a cobra health plan, so it's been costing the business something around $600 per mon. to keep him on, John has been unemployed due to his condition and is having this done in LA in a couple of weeks. Hopefully this will be the solution, the surgery alone is life-threatening, so needless to say I want to give this muffler shop my business. -
Ok, in my version, the steel wool goes into the tea strainer basket that is on top, the reason that you can't vent out that same place is because it wouldn't have passed through the filter. The vent is just the highest place outside the filter, and if you look closely at condensators they have the vent outside the filter even though they are at the same hight. Hope that makes sense
