Is this person still around?
karinvail replied to LeDevil's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you don't buy it, I'd love to look at it - my oldest son is quickly coming up to driving age, and I'd like to get a 'fixer upper' car he can learn to work on himself........ -
New record fuel mileage for me!
karinvail replied to heartless's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did a test on a tank of gas with driving it harder too - and it got 2 MPG BETTER with shifting at higher RPM's! (shifting around 4500 instead of 3000-3500). -
hmm , this is something I've always wondered too - I've put as much as almost 14 gallons in one fill-up and that is running it past the 'E', so I personally would guess it would be the 14 1/2 gallon capacity, but I've never run it empty and then filled it full either (I have run it empty and put some in with a gas can, but didn't fill it full afterwards).

Timing belts - I did it!

LOL Glen! Actually, the linkage needs work or something. It's stuck in one gear and it's a SLOW one -

Actually, I got the mower running too! It was the coil that was bad. But, now it has other issues that have to be addressed today -
Well, early this week, my car broke the drivers side belt in town and hubby and I towed it to his friends house (which was only a few blocks from where it broke down) until we could get back to work on it. I told him that this was going to be *my* job, that I wanted to do it by myself. So, yesterday, we went over and I started about 6:30 pm and finished about 9:30 pm. I did everything myself except hubby and his friend did set the timing after I was all done buttoning everything back up. I had 3 guys telling me what to do (while they sat there and drank beer) but I just ignored them and told them I was going to follow the directions that Pat and Miles gave me and I would listen to them only IF I didn't get it right the first time. Well, I got it right the first time!!!! Hee hee hee It actually runs BETTER than it did before - I have a feeling the old belts were off a tooth somewhere because it runs a LOT smoother now Happy to have my Soob back and happy I was able to do it myself! Thanks so much for this website and all the helpful people on here!!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought these Napa belts for my car..... does ''right hand belt'' mean passenger side??? -
OK where's the damn O2 sensor in my 84 OHV 1800?!?

The reason your car is running too cool now is that you have the fan hard-wired to be on all the time. These cars don't need a fan on all the time (except I think that the turbo models have a clutch fan as well as the electric fan). You can either put the fan on a switch so you can choose when to turn it on, or replace the thermoswitch in the radiator and wire it back to original. -
They CALL it an SUV, but it looks like a mini van to me :barf:

I replaced the water pump gasket in the last motor that was in this car back in February, so I know that little trick (coil wire off, wratchet on, bump starter). Worked great last time, but I agree it's a little nerve-racking thinking about it, LOL. Funny thing, I don't remember how we got it back on tight either! hmmm......

Thanks so much Pat and Miles! I'll let you know how it goes I told hubby that this was MY job, I getta do it I just noticed that there is nothing about taking out plug #1 in either instructions. This is a HUGE relief as I would almost certainly have to do a heli-coil on that cylinder if I had to take out that plug again

OH NO! Anybody have it saved they can post here or email me? (Timing belt replacement) I have a Hayne's manual, but I have not been impressed with it's info. Maybe I should dig it out and see if it's directions are good enough for me to follow. I know that the ones on here were so easy for me to follow even just reading it, I understood each step...........

I tried to go to the repair pages to print out the timing belt replacement section. (YES, damn thing broke on me today! I knew immediately, before I was even off the road what it was at least, and even knew it was the drivers side, LOL). Anyhow, I'm getting an error message when I click on the link from www.ultimatesubaru.org

My vote goes for broken timing belt on passenger side too (if that is the side that there was no compression). And don't let your mechanic tell you that it's messed up the valves breaking a timing belt either. These engines are non-interferance engines. I had the drivers side belt break on an 85 turbo sedan I had years back - it cut out completely and would not start. It cost about $200 for the shop to replace the belts and all was well again. If it happened to me again, I would replace them myself following MileFox's article http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=24 -
Well, I guess that's what I get skimming thought stuff and not reading the stickies, LOL And, yes, there has been a considerable amount of time spent on trying to trace the problems on that blasted mower! At least the neighbor let us borrow his mower to mow before the lawn got too out of control. I would love to go, I am not sure about that weekend though. It will be a lst minute decision if we could go or not. I'm sure hubby would like to go too though - sounds like a lot of fun. Is this going to be a 'kid friendly' environment?

ahhh, that just sucks! Not to change the subject, but where'd ya get that floor mat for the back cargo area???? I want one!!!

Reverse gear slipping out.
karinvail replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
When I bought my '85 turbo sedan with a 5-speed back in '90, I also bought the Subaru warantee with it. Good thing too because my tranny did what you described after having it less than a year and it only had 75K on the odo at the time too (had 60K on it when I bought it). It would pop out of 2nd gear and reverse (but would also grind INTO those gears). I took it in on that warrantee, and they ended up having to rebuild the tranny.... they said they wish they would have known it was going to need so many parts because they would have been better off putting in a new one! I did have to pay for a new clutch (not covered by warantee since it's a ''maintenance item''). The tranny would have cost me $1400 for what they did on it though if I hadn't had that warantee! -
An extra y-pipe I have has the cat on it - and the top of the shroud on it has a 2 1/2 or so inch round short pipe straight up (just a few inches tall). I'm *guessing* that this is supposed to route somehow to the air cleaner box for choke operation???? Just a wild guess, but it's the best thing I could come up with, LOL. The y-pipe I have now has started to leak, so I am considering putting this one on.......

LOL Pyro! Sounds like just what I haul in mine. The milk crates are a good idea though!

I am stupid, how do I get out this dent?
karinvail replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The window cranks are held on with a little wire clip (spring-type wire) that is shaped kinda like an hour-glass. I use a peice of 14-16 guage wire and make a small hook at one end. with the end of the hook facing outward, you put the wire behind the handle part and near the axis, you will find the wire that you can grab with the wire hook. Careful not to loose it, they can really go sproing When you put the handle back on after you are done, you put the clip on the handle FIRST, then snap the handle into position.
