My '83 GL: The Ski Wagon
And that is the problem of wanting to keep these vehicles around. Spend big bucks to restore them, make them "Garage Queens"..... or,,, Fix them and drive them. Main reason the '82 is still setting in the garage is, rust issues. Ok, I fix that,,,,,, then what?????????????????????? '85 was a real good body, but as luck would have it, I had to do some Winter driving with it. Now,,,,,,, it's as bad rusted as that Wagon you're trying to fix. Damned if you do, damned if you don't...........

What Have You Done to your Soobie lately? (Please post in here and keep it going)
Planned on doing some "needed maintenance". Wound up breaking it. All(most) better now after engine swap......................

Test run done. Got some spark knock going on, coolant temp is a tad high right now, above the 1/2 mark. Spark knock could be from the CEL being on, don't know. Don't do it at 1st start and go, but it does come in shortly afterwards. Going to get some octane booster and dump it in the tank, see if that helps for now. Got a Family get-together starting soon, so all wrenching is done for the day. My Baby Sister, Molly is up here from Texas...................

Ok!! Back on the road again. Got it buttoned up as of now. Still need to do a road test, but need to make a trip to get some oil too, so I'll combine the trips. Should do an oil/filter change on it now, but low on cash for all of that. "CEL" came back on within 15 minutes of run time. I'll pull code later, but it's probally still code 55, as I haven't fixed the issue yet.

I had the EA81 in and running before I got the parts Wagon, was just holding onto the engine from it, incase of need. I be needing it................ I'll be going thru the EA81 to freshen it up. New gaskets/seals, SPFI pistons, cam grind. Just wasn't planning to pull it out yet.

HA!!!!!!!!!!! So much for doing simple tasks today....................... Think I found source of the click/clunk. Radius rod bushings are bad, DS one is most obvious now. Guess I overlooked those during the build. Will order new ones. Laying under the Wagon, I noticed one heck of a lot of oil all over the place. Traced it back to either the crankseal or oilpump. It be the pump......................................... Tried to pull pump for reseal, broke it. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Pulled EA81 engine, put newish belts and tensioners on the '92 EA82 out of the parts Wagon, dropped the lump in. Still need to do some work, but it's in, bolted to the trans, fuel/electrics are done. Hope to fire it up tomorrow, by noon... Need it for trip to work Monday AM.... Del let me know 20 minutes ago that "I" was cooking supper tonight. Grr...

Gotcha on the cable routing part. Can't sleep, so beem sitting here thinking on things to check on. Kinda running back over work done to this Wagon since I got it. Got the thought of a bolt or the likes, not properly tightened/missed, during the assembly process. Lot of stop/start cycles during the wrenching, with quite a few days between garage times. Might have over-looked something. Tried to make sure I finished something before I stopped for the day, but..................... edit: Remembered to bring the resistor home. So now I can fix the "Check Engine Light".

Part of the plan this weekend is to check balljoints and such. Strut tops appear to be good visually, no cracks or the like. I have no idea as to actual mileage or time-in-use for them though. XT6 was converted from air-ride before I got it. Wagon seems to roll easy, so don't think there's a hangup with the E-brake, but one never knows on some things.................

GL EA82 5spd shift linkage bushing
Correct. And you do need to remove the pins, and slide the piece off the shift rod to remove that bolt. I haven't found any other way to do so.

Guess I need to go over everything under the front of the Wagon checking for loosness. Been hearing a noise when turning into my driveway. Sort of a light clunk, but but more click than clunk Yesterday, heard what sounded like something was rubbing while doing a slow right turn into a cul-de-sac. 1st time for that.. And didn't hear it again on the drive home. Be spending time in the garage this weekend...........................

Found needed resistor to fix the code, but left it at work. Another issue has arose, nothing drastic though. Seems the "Door Lock" light doesn't always want to go out when I lock the doors. So,,, I get the fun of figuring out which lock isn't fully functioning. YEA!!!!!

Totally happy with it. Glen did a great job swapping the glass. I'm amazed at how clean it is, or was. Within a mile or so of his shop I had about 10 bugs smashed against it. Caught up to one of the double-bottom gravel haulers that are constantly on the roads here. Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! No,,,, we shall take different road home. Don't need no rock chip(s). Now, time to get some new wiperblades.

Intake Manifold Interchange
Yes both the EA82 carb and SPFI intakes will fit an EA81 engine. There are clearance issues around the EA81 disty with both, but they are easily worked around. I've ran an EA82 intake with Weber on 2 different EA81 engines. Currently have an EA81 in my '88 Wagon running the SPFI. Even have the EA82 poweerstering pump mounted to the EA81. Proper belt tensioner setup is still to be found for that though.

FSM says I should have 250 Ohm's or more on the White/Red wire Pin 36 at the ECU connector, if the Sensor and circuit is good. Apparently, not having that sensor makes it bad....
-
TomRHere's '88 GL 4WD Wagon
Got code 55 back again. What the hay is up with that??? Guess I'll stick my nose back into the FSM and find the Ohm reading it's looking for, splice in a resistor to that circuit.

My '83 GL: The Ski Wagon
Spacers are usefull, used many of them. BUT,,,, it should all line up.. GD or another well versed Subaru Guru would have to answer the question about different boss positions on solid/hydraulic EA81's, I can't at the monment. Just hard for me to believe that I had both alt brackets sets off both engines and just happened to grab the correct ones when putting stuff back on my engine. Pretty sure the one the '88 Wagon was the one off the '86 BRAT, modded for my Weber swap. And that is definetly an older solid lifter motor that was swapped in. Wagon has a hydraulic lifter motor in it The curved bracket wasn't "cut" anywhere was it?
