  1. I finally pulled the short block (SOA478H600R1) that I purchased a couple months ago out of the box and put onto a stand. Changed out the 7mm oil pump for a 9mm that I had (I don't think I'll need a 10mm as I'm a conservative driver, and this is just for a DD project). Looking at the pistons, they're labeled as 255 SH. Is this going to be a problem mounting with DOHC heads? When I was talking with a subaru parts tech over the phone I had specified that I wanted an EJ251 or EJ253 short block for '03-'05, and they had given me the part number. I had then talked with a different Parts Tech, and they confirmed that that part number was for what I had specified. Are the pistons the same? I thought the 255s were used with the AVL systems, and can't work with pre-AVLS. . Should I be looking for new pistons now? The current motor in my car is an EJ from a 2001 Impreza, with DOHC heads. I wanted to recreate the build as it is generally a nice and powerful (enough) motor. Also, I bought a brand new subaru water pump because I thought the stock one that came on the block was supposed to be forward facing.... What showed up is identical to the spare I bought. They are identical, right? Thanks all, Greg
  2. Howdy. I am needing to replace the front struts on my recently purchased (after saving for over a year) 05 baha sport. Local auto parts stores dont carry the front struts! And I'd like to get the full strut assembly, to save my frustration level, time and worn out body. Being a female shade tree machanic (lol) doesn't have the appeal at 63 as it did at 33! I'm confused when trying to research because some say the legacy will interchange but according to O'Riellys the outback interchanges with the baja (2000 - 2004 outback with 2003 -2006 Baja) and yes I know there are legacy outbacks and Impreza putbacks. I previously owned an Impreza outback sport. And the front end took a dive on it as well. I'm hoping to advert a repeat with my Baja, I just love this little wanna be truck! Any help or direction sincerely appreciated!
  3. I have a 1987 GL 4-door wagon with push button 4WD. It has a 3-speed auto trans, A/C, Carb, 1.8L, all power options. When searching for transmissions at car-part dot com, I see FWD or AWD. Under descriptions provided by the wrecking yard, I see 2WD, 4WD, FWD, and AWD. I know that 1987 had both 4WD and AWD, carburetor and fuel injection. 1) Was there such a thing as a FWD (no 4WD button) during 1985 - 87? 2) Which transmission do I need? 3) Does anyone have a good used one with torque converter for sale that will ship, preferably in the pacific northwest? Thanks
  4. Hello all in USMB world, Happy to be a new member, Thanks. I've had many different models of Subaru over the years, none modified, but its been a while. My newest to me is an '89 GL 3dr D/R 5 Spd that I bought last Saturday. Even before buying it, but not before checking out some of ya'll's too cool modified Subaru', it was earmarked for a small lift and not so small tires. The Info here is inspiring! So far, I think a 2" strut lift, 6 lug conversion, 2.2 swap, I want it to go anywhere my Suburban will go and beyond while still being a good daily driver. I love reading about and seeing what others have done. Amazing! There is probably a thread I haven't found on it yet but I found this Impreza and it's soon to be crushed. http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/pts/3564522993.html I'm wondering if the Struts out of this 97 Impreza would be a good change or not for my GL and if maybe the seats or anything else would be good to grab. Hate to see good parts get crushed. I am very interested in hearing ideas from other more experienced modifiers. Many of you have already been very helpful.
