October 10, 200916 yr No the 2.5 out of a pre 2000 outback will be the dual overhead cam 2.5. Though this engine will bolt up the intake and all computer controls are totally different. The 2000 legacy has what is called a phase 2 engine. Its a single overhead cam 2.5. Does the one you are looking at have a bad engine? Rod knock. I know a couple junkyard here in columbus that are reliable that have the phase 2 2.5 engines.

October 10, 200916 yr Author no rod knock , runs great , needs brake work, no hg problem, the other motor from another subaru [ 97] had the rod knock, could you look around the yards for a drivers side rear tail light, for a 2000 legacy, + whole rear white hatch, thanks
October 11, 200916 yr Author when ahead and bought it, dead battery, anyway put a different battery in it, had a alittle idle problem, was looking and a mouse had made a home in the air box and ate away at the air filter,
October 14, 200916 yr weird.. my moms 2002 lego has a 2.2 in it not the 2.5..I wonder if its an option? I know the wagons, with 5 speeds, in the L trim level, could be had with the 2.2, at least into 2001...... Not sure about after that???? All the sedans that I have seen of this vintage were 2.5's.
