And help me out but wasnt those the only few years where you could get fuel injection and the dual range was still offered. 85-87 you could only get carbed for the most part. Personally I prefer Carbuerators, but thats just my preference. GeneralDisorder Posted December 16, 2009 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Depends on what you want.... 100% stock - 87.5 to 89 GL, D/R 5MT, SPFI 90% stock - '82 to '89 GL Hatch with D/R 5MT transplant. 40% stock - '82 to '89 GL Hatch with D/R 5MT + EJ22. That's as good as the '80's get's right there. Of course a low-mileage near-perfect Brat trumps all, but hey - not everyone can have one of those. Rear shoulder belt, that comes from lower rear window ledge, over seat......perfect for kids under 4'9". (unlike later high mounted Loyale belts) Late SPFI (without the older oddball connectors, 100% compatible with Loyale ECU and FI parts) Dual/Range 5spd 4 speaker stereo, Standard DIN radio mounting bracket, easier Aftermarket upgrades(still have to seperate grounds) No passive restrain belts(automatic head clockers) The only options that I would like to see, that was not offered in 89 is the Adjustable height struts from 85/86 GL's and outside temp, which was only in the GL-10 package. And of course DL headlights, though unsightly, are far superior for brightness and ease of service. We only got DL flat roof or GL touring wagon, plus DL, GL, RX turbo (86 & 87 only) sedans. Thing I don't like about the high roof is no sunroof availability. Over here 90 Touring wagon was the best. Last year of any GL, manual, dual range, MPFI You guys got better spec'd cars, GL-10, turbos, but got dudded on the transmissions. And yes, the RX turbo hatchback with full time, dual range, centre diff lock 4wd is the best. And that's not a laptop, its an early calculator watch. chadwick35/04 Posted December 19, 2009 Share Posted December 19, 2009 Well I had a 1989 gl turbo touring wagon with the raised roof and it was priceless, general maint, but other than that it ran like a a champ and was so dependable and so fun to drive it had 155k on it but the only thing that it rusted out and I had to get rid of it, which sucked I traded it in actaully then someone in vt took it and fixed it up I was so pissed, at that time I dind't have the extra money to fix the rust cause it turned to rot, it was a gl 4wd turbo model close to the gl10, I loved it so myself would say 89 ws a great year myself, good luck! Bought it sight unseen from a wrecker mate & thought it would complement the ground effects kit I bought (for less money) from over there. Seeing the only other kit in Aus is on an imported JDM coupe I thought it would complement it. Duraznov Posted February 6, 2010 Share Posted February 6, 2010 For me the best is the 89 TW too, here in Chile the 89s were sold with carb and with MPFI Turbo. I have one GL with carb , A/C, Dual Range, raised roof, 5 speed, power windows, mirrors, tachometer, height regulation for seat and wheel, among a lot of good things. The Turbo also came with air suspention. I also have a 93 DLX Wagon, the only thing I consider "superior" is it has MPFI, but after 1990 here were no longer available the GLs. DLX has no A/C, no Power windows, no tachometer, no head rest on the back seats, no carpet on the floor but a cheap plastic cover, no speakers on the rear doors, I think that was for forcing people to buy Legacys...
