Fiat 500 Subaru Swap

Featured Replies

Hello from Miami Florida. Researching EJ & EA engines for a swap in my 1972 Fiat 500. I've managed to blow 3 Fiat engines, so looking for some more reliability from the Subaru.

Welcome to the USMB

Yes, I agree... PICS

What are your plans? Racing? Rally/AutoX? Just more power?

EA81 is a great solid motor

EJ22 is another great solid motor (has timing belts though)

I love my EA82, but they do get a lot of bad press... EJ25 isnt that great of a motor, more power, but more problems.

EJ22T is just asking for trouble (tickets) but is a good motor as well

Some pics of my cars are here:

I haven't updated it in a bit, and have some new toys.

Regarding engines, I am leaning towards an EA81 for simplicity and reliability. Seems like none are available for sale. Are they that rare?

David

They didn't used to be ;) They ea81's are getting pretty rare. I have a couple as daily drivers, but they are getting a bit outdated.

Welcome the fiat looks very nice. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes

Any suggestions of where to look for an EA series engine? Which cars came equipped with them? Seems like I might have to buy an entire car and pull the engine.

There is a bunch of them listed. Sort by price or distance as you prefer. Search 83-83 Subaru Other 1.8 no turbo. Auto trans cars came with hydraulic lifters and most manual trans cars were solid lifter.

Is there a particular ea81 that is better than others? Been researching, and it's seems like it a is pretty interesting and bullet proof engine.

You'll probably get more specific information by reading and asking questions in the Older Generation forum.

Good luck with the project and please do keep us up on your progress.

I know it's a bit of a ride for you, but I've got an EA81 with hydro lifters out of an '85 hatch. It has 86,000 miles on it. It'd be perfect for that Fiat...

What are you wanting to do i guess. You can get some ea81s to get above 100 or so hp with mods there are a few on here who have done that. EJ22 has around 130hp but fuel injected so you need to get the ecu and whatnot.

Wow. That cardomain garage is loaded with treasure!

You looking for a room-mate? Lol.

Got a motor! Will post pics as project progresses. Probably going going to custom make a manifold using 40mm Dellorto side draft I have. Going to keep motor basically stock for reliability. It's going to fly in such a light car.

The bottom of the intake does have a coolant passage, so you're going to have to work around that. Just a heads up.

I saw that. Could I block it off, or is necessary to flow between the heads?

I believe it's mostly necessary to heat the intake to prevent carb icing, but if you're going to fab up custom carbs to it I can't imagine it's too much harder to keep the crossover, It won't hurt anything to keep it.

brats with ea81 82-87 (some of the older body style came factory with them in 81 but 77-80 where ea71)

u want this body style for a brat might as well show off mine:D

be careful some in 81 have the ea71(1600cc) but most of them did have the ea81 also be care in 83 they did a turbo line of these that went from 83.5 to 84 but there was only a few of them (300-500 turbo brats made just to give u a idea and subaru couldn't even count how many they made:banghead:) basicly all the ea81's where non-turbo but (if u dont want to buy buy turbo dont buy it if it has a t at the end example ea81t)
