January 19, 201313 yr Hi, my when my turbo kicks on my 1988 gl 10 it emitts a weird smell. I cant smell it in the car, but when i step out after I turn it off i can smell it. It smells like a caterpillar, i cant link it with anything else than a caterpillar. What the hell is this? is my turbo actually a giant caterpillar in disguise or is it something else?!?
January 19, 201313 yr Lol what does a caterpillar even smell like? I would check around the engine compartment for a pack rat nest
January 20, 201313 yr Thats called burning rubber When the turbo is boosting its also creating lots of heat. Look for stuff thats close to it to see if its melting.
January 20, 201313 yr ... It smells like a caterpillar... I Guess you meant like a Burning Oil (Diesel) Smell, isn't it? Does it leaks Oil? Kind Regards.
January 20, 201313 yr I would go for burning oil smell. Mark that one for your vocabulary of smells as knowing different smells comes in handy for troubleshooting cars.
January 21, 201313 yr Author no its not a burning oil smell, i cant explain it at all, its weird i have smelt this before on a car, it does not smell like a head gasket either, is there such thing as an exhaust gasket?
January 21, 201313 yr Burning coolant. Probably cracked heads in the exhaust port. Check you coolant regularly and you can drive it for a long time still.
January 21, 201313 yr Well, we dont have smell a vision here so everything is speculation. Keep a eye on all fluid levels and for smoke, thats all we can suggest.
